SCHOOL NEWS:

The Junior Class will be hosting a fundraiser at a local sandwich shop on Pleasant Valley Road between April 2nd and April 8th. All money will go towards Junior Prom. Please come out and support our class--mention that you are supporting the SWHS Class of 2024 so that we can get the proceeds! See a Junior class officer with questions.

Do you have gently used sporting equipment that you no longer need? Give them a second life by donating it to Equipment Assist. Equipment Assist is a local program run by 3 high school freshmen who are collecting items to donate to the Hartford Police Athletic League (PAL) and Active City, which benefits underserved youth. From now through April 30th, we are collecting all types of gently used sports equipment including but not limited to: cleats, ice and hockey skates, baseball gloves, balls, helmets, shin guards, etc. All sizes are acceptable. South Windsor pick-ups will be on April 2nd and 30th. If you have questions, or to schedule a pick up, please email [email protected]

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

National Honors Society will be hosting a fundraiser at a local frozen yogurt shop in the Buckland Hills Plaza on March 31st from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Come show your support and mention the National Honors Society when you make your purchase! 

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

The United States Coast Guard will have a representative in the Career Center to meet with interested students on Today, March 30th at 10 a.m. If you would like to learn more about joining the Coast Guard or even have an interest in military life, sign up in Naviance to attend.

During the week of March 27th, the library will be closed to study halls at various times throughout the day due to class reservations. Please check the library signs for specific periods. 

Please consider nominating a Staff or Faculty member for Staffulty of the Month. Students can nominate faculty and staff for the Staffulty of the Month award. This is someone you feel demonstrates kindness, understanding, encouragement, and more through this school year. Nominations will be reviewed by Student Council officers. Two Staff members will be selected every month. They will be recognized at monthly faculty meetings and on the school website. Please be school appropriate with your nominations.You can nominate a Staff or faculty member on your class Google Classroom page. Reach out to Ms. Ullinger with any questions!

You can compete with a team of up to 5 people. 1st place will get a $200 giftcard to Sakura, 2nd place will get $100 to Oakland Pizza and 3rd place will get $50 to DQ! There will be tons of raffles, too throughout the night. Look out for lunch wave sign ups starting on March 27th. We can't wait for you to join us! Reach out to Ms. Ullinger with any questions!

In honor of Earth day, FBLA is bringing you the first ever Lip Sync Battle on April 20th in the Cafe from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Teams and solo performers welcome- sign up during lunch waves from March 31st  thru April 6th or see Miss Cruz in Room 125. Cost is $5 per performer, $8 for spectators, $10 at the door.  

In honor of Women's History Month, the Black Student Alliance and Unified for Underprivileged Girls will be hosting a Women's Fair on Wednesday, March 29th at 2:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria. All students are invited to an interactive experience where they are able to be inspired and empowered by women that are making a positive impact in their respective careers. Light refreshments will  be served. We hope to see you there!

The next Italian Club meeting is on Wednesday, April 5th right after school in Room 105. We'll be cooking and eating 4 different pasta and sauce recipes, salad, and bruschetta. All are welcome, but space is limited, so save your spot by bringing $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli in Room 226. 

The Environmental Club is selling flowering bulbs to support the purchase of 2 trees which will be planted on school grounds. See Mrs. Eitel in Room 206 to purchase the bulbs from 3/10 to 4/10.

RYLA is a one day workshop on June 3rd during which students hear from a motivational speaker, participate in a roundtable discussion, and learn about the value of teamwork. South Windsor High School will select 2 students from the sophomore class to represent our community at the event.

Seniors – if you have recently been accepted into college or trade school, enlisted in the military, or made an employment plan for after graduation, please fill out the Google form in your Senior classroom. You may fill it out multiple times for as many acceptances as you receive. Submitting this form allows your good news to be shared on the screen outside of School Counseling and in our monthly newsletter. We would love to celebrate and announce your accomplishments! You can also scan the QR code in the main lobby display case or on the flier outside School Counseling.

Please bring in any and all gently used prom dresses, jewelry, and shoes to the bin in front of the main office. All items will be donated to Cornerstone Donation Center in Vernon. Ramadan has begun and continues until April 20th.  We wish those celebrating a Happy Ramadan.  If you celebrate Ramadan and need assistance observing it during school, please see your school counselor.

Attention Seniors: the final wave of Capstone presentations will be held on Thursday, March 23rd.  This wave will be virtual.  In order to present, your advisor needs to have scored your written work as successful and you must fill out the Google Form that is posted on the Capstone Website.  Reach out to your advisor with any questions.

Does it support inclusion and respect or foster a positive school community? Does your idea just need a little financial support? Good news…Youth and Family Services is sponsoring a grant program called “Make a Change Mini Grant” to support students wanting to make a positive impact with their ideas. The application form can be found on the website and all entries must be received by April 7th. Please see Mr. Zeuschner with any questions.

The South Windsor High School HOPE Club is sponsoring a blood drive with the American Red Cross in the Library on Tuesday, March 21st, 2023 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be free snacks and drinks for donors. If you are healthy and eligible, please donate. Most donations take about an hour, so book your appointment, roll up your sleeve and become a part of the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross. You must be at least 16 years of age to donate blood. 16 year olds must have the Parental Consent form completed: For access to the form and additional details, please visit our school website homepage at https://highschool.southwindsorschools.org/news/what_s_new/hope_club_blood_drive

Most donations take about an hour, so book your appointment, roll up your sleeve and become a part of the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross. You must be at least 16 years of age to donate blood. 16 year olds must have the Parental Consent form completed: Parental-Consent-Blood-Donation.pdf. Do you and your friends have an idea to make South Windsor High School a better place?  Does your idea promote kindness or emotional wellness?  Does it support inclusion and respect or foster a positive school community?  Does your idea just need a little financial support?  Good news…Youth and Family Services is sponsoring a grant program called “Make a Change Mini Grant” to support students wanting to make a positive impact with their ideas.  The application form can be found on the website and all entries must be received by April 7th.  Please see Mr. Zeuschner with any questions.

Come join the outing club for a hike on April 1st. Permission slips and can be picked up in Room 254 or 264. Payment and permission slips are due March 21st

NHS’s Period Committee is hosting a drive for women’s hygiene products. Drop off items from March 20th to March 24th in the Front Lobby. Products will go to the school nurse and a local women’s shelter.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

We will have 2 visits to the Career Center on Monday. The United States Marine Corps will be here at 10 a.m. and Lincoln Technical Institute will visit at 12:15 p.m. If you are considering the military or trade school after you graduate, these are both helpful visits to learn about those options. ATHLETICS:  

We are asking winter athletes to fill out both a Google survey questionnaire that was previously sent out and an additional Google comment survey that will be shared today regarding your winter sport experience.
