Happy Women's History month! In celebration, Unified for Underprivileged Girls is having a month-long fundraiser with Leah Cunha crafts. Any purchases made from her website supports our pen pals in Kenya! This is a great way to raise money for our pan pals, earn credit for the club, and get some cute jewelry in the process!

This month's menu items are: Shamrock Shakes, Irish Soda Bread, Irish Nachos, Hot Pastrami Pizza, Lucky Charms Cookies and Over The Rainbow Cupcakes. Please bring $5 to Sra. Ruiz in AN 56 or to Sra. Hwang in AN 37 to reserve your spot today.

Tuesday, March 19th is SAT Day for Juniors. Students must report to their testing room with a fully charged, school-issued Chromebook and a Chromebook charger. It is optional to bring a snack, drink, and calculator. Room assignments will be posted in the lobby and outside the cafeteria the week before testing. Students with testing accommodations will receive additional instructions. 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will have late arrival, virtual capstone presentations, or virtual AP review. The school day will start with period 5 beginning at 11:10 am. Morning Bus routes for 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will run on a 4 hour delay.

SCHOOL NEWS:

 

This week's tip from the writing center: If you have an assignment with a word limit, don't focus on that while writing. Just get all your ideas out on the page. Then go back, re-read, and ask yourself what needs to remain and what is unnecessary. For help editing and revising, stop by the Writing Center in Room 136 Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays from 2-3 pm. For more writing tips, follow us on Instagram @swhswritingcenter.

The Environmental Club is selling t-shirts to promote “Earth Day is Every Day!” Shirts will be sold in the Cafe and in Ms. Eitel’s classroom Room 206 from February 26th thru June. Students will wear the shirts on specific days to show their love of conservation and environmental stewardship.

 

Bobcat Robotics is hosting a sweet online fundraiser through a chocolate shop located at Evergreen Walk. Visit the store website to place an order. Part of the proceeds will benefit Bobcat Robotics.

If you are interested in learning more about the United States Air Force or Marines, please check Naviance for upcoming visits and sign up to attend! There are multiple military academy summer programs for students interested in learning more about academy life. West Point is running a Summer Leaders Experience - a week-long immersion into the academic, military, and social life of a West Point cadet. Admission to the program is highly selective and applications are due by March 15th. The United States Naval Academy offers both Summer Seminar and Summer STEM programs. Applications to those programs are due on April 15th. There are still appointment slots available for South Windsor High School’s spring blood drive March 12th in the media center. As a thank you for donating, the Red Cross is providing all donors with a $10 gift card by email to a pet supply merchant of their choice. To sign up, scan the QR code on the posters around school. We will also take walk-ins tomorrow. You must be 17 or older, or 16 years with a parent permission form to donate. See Ms. Karasinski in Room 207 for more information.

SCHOOL NEWS:


The 9th Grade Class will be selling Shamrocks during all 4 lunch waves the week of March 4th to March 8th. Stop by the table during your lunch wave to write out your note on the shamrock. They will be delivered during homeroom on March 14th. Each Shamrock will cost $1.00. Proceeds go to the 9th grade Class of 2027. See Mrs. Barrett with questions.


If you are interested in saving three lives, please consider signing up for South Windsor High School’s spring blood drive being held on Tuesday, March 12th during school. Every donation counts. This week's tip from the Writing Center: When writing a paper that analyzes evidence, most of your paragraph should be your ideas, not quotations. One trick to check is to color code your ideas and the evidence and see how much of the paragraph is evidence. For more tips and tricks, follow @swhswritingcenter on Instagram and check us out in room 136 from 2-3 on Mondays, Wednesday, and Thursdays.


ATHLETICS:


For all girls interested in playing girls soccer next fall there will be a meeting this Friday 3/8 at 3pm in room 102.


COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:


IMPORTANT SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE FOR SENIORS: If you are applying to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving scholarship program, please note that the deadline has again been extended due to delays in FAFSA reporting. Applications are now due by Monday, April 15th. If you have started your Dollars for Scholars application – the deadline is still March 15th. Your FAFSA information is not required to complete your application. Please see Mrs. Carty with specific questions about these programs.


CT AeroTech, an extension of Bristol Technical Education Center will hold an Open House on Saturday, April 27th from 9 AM to Noon at Brainard Airport in Hartford. Anyone interested in learning more about the aircraft maintenance industry is invited to attend. There is a flier hanging in the Career Center or keep an eye out for it in the next School Counseling newsletter!
