SCHOOL NEWS:

It’s Jack-O-Gram season!  Share the spirit of kindness by sending your friends a gourd-eous  pumpkin with a spooktacular message. Buy your pumpkins from an FBLA member or during  Period 5 lunch waves from 10/16-10/27. You can buy 1 for $2, 2 for $3 or 3 for $5. They will be delivered on 10/31. See Ms Cruz with questions.

It’s time to nominate a senior for Homecoming King and Queen. The 8 seniors with the most nominations will move on to the 2023 Homecoming Court. Homecoming Court will be announced October 25th. The form is on the Google Classroom page for your class. Nominations must be entered before Friday, October 13th at 2:00 PM. 

The 9th Grade Science teachers would like to invite last year’s participants in the annual 9th Grade Science Fair to enter their projects for an opportunity to submit to the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair. Please check your grade level Google Classroom submission requirements. The google form must be completed by MONDAY, OCT 15. Feel free to contact Mrs. Eitel (Room 205) or Mrs. Davis (205) if you have any questions. 

Thursday, October 12th is PSAT day for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. Students must arrive with a fully charged Chromebook. We also recommend bringing a snack and a drink. A desmos calculator will be provided through the testing platform, or, students may bring their own personal calculator if they prefer. Room assignments will be posted around the school on large posters. See your school counselor with any questions. 
12th grade students are not to report to school unless they are participating in Capstone presentations. We recommend that 12th grade students use this time to work on college application materials or participate in a college visit. 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

Italian Club will meet on Wednesday, October 11th, right after school near the playground outside the Annex.  We will be playing bocce and eating pizza. Please bring  $5  to Mrs. Zaccardelli in Annex Room 35 to save your spot.

Picture retake day is Wednesday, October 11th in the Media Center. If students would like to have a picture retaken, they must report to the Main Office to see Mrs. Balducci before 8:30 am that morning to receive a pass for the retake. We encourage students to schedule their retakes during a study hall or during homeroom. 

Student Council needs your help. We are looking for t-shirt designs that encompass the new SWHS campus, incorporating both the high school and annex buildings. The theme is “2 buildings, one community”. We want to stick with school colors of maroon, gold, white and black for the t-shirt and are looking for one design on the front of the shirt. Please submit t-shirt designs by October 13th at 2 pm using the custom link in your Google classroom. See Ms. Ullinger with questions.

The Environmental club will meet Wednesday, October 11th, at 2:10pm in Room 206. Join us to learn more about issues that face our planet and what you can do to help. Our projects include composting, bottles and cans recycling, growing spring bulbs, designing a perennial garden for the school, and presenting ocean acidification to the elementary schools.  Join our google classroom at 5SZWFAH

S.W. Youth and Family Services, in collaboration with the S.W. Public Schools and the S.W. Police Dept., brings the documentary “Screenagers – Under the Influence” to South Windsor on Wed, October 11th. The free movie will be shown in the Timothy Edwards auditorium from 6:30-7:30pm, followed by a 30 minute discussion. We invite all adults in the community to join us for this important conversation on how to help youth make positive decisions in this changing world. All attendees will be entered into a raffle to win a $100 Amazon gift card. Put October 11th on your calendar and join us for “Screenagers”!

SWHS students will have the opportunity to learn about leadership in state government, specifically in the General Assembly of CT. Delegates currently representing South Windsor will be in attendance to share their experience and answer student questions about state government and leadership. This event will be held on 10/5 after school in the cafeteria from 2:30-3:30.  Please fill out this form (below) if you plan to attend! CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

The Science National Honor Society is officially opening a chapter at SWHS. To become a member of SNHS, you must meet certain criteria based on your academic achievements in science courses. Application letters will be sent via email to all eligible juniors and seniors. If you didn’t get an invitation but are still interested, please fill out the application form that will be posted in your grade level google classrooms. For more information please contact Samarth Basanth, Srinidhi Karthik, or Mrs. Davis in Room 205.

The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club will hold an informational meeting on Wed., October 4th at 7am in the Auditorium. All current members and those interested in learning more about the club are invited to attend. The SADD Club tackles issues like distracted driving, drug and alcohol prevention, mental health and positive school climate. We also spread messages of kindness, respect and unity. The classroom code is pg47m6k.

The Bobcat Bowling Club session 1 Starts October 4th. The Bowling club meets every Wednesday from October 4th thru November 1st. Pick up a permission slip in Room 168 or join the google classroom, Code 65yudm. See Mr. Gray in Room 168 with questions or concerns. 

National Honor Society is currently inviting eligible candidates to complete the selection process. If you are a junior or senior who has a cumulative, weighted GPA of at least 3.75, you should receive a letter in the mail notifying you of your candidacy. If you do not receive a letter but think you qualify, please see Mrs. Leone in Room 204.

The Sophomore Class will have a fundraiser at a local burger restaurant in Evergreen Walk this Monday, October 2 from 11 am - 10 pm. Take a photo of one of the flyers around school or use the code DONATE25 when ordering.

The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology will host a Smart Manufacturing Careers Tour at Goodwin University on Wednesday, October 4th from 3-6 PM for high school students interested in learning more about a future in manufacturing. Students will have the opportunity to explore state-of-the-art manufacturing labs, learn more about the manufacturing programs offered at GU, and meet with industry ambassadors from innovative companies throughout CT. There is a flier in the Career Center with a QR code and contact information to learn more and RSVP to the program.

ATHLETICS:

Attention Fall Athletes: Morning access to the locker rooms will only be available from the Hall of Achievement between 7:15 – 7:25 am. Please wait in the Hall of Achievement when you arrive at school.

Spectrum Band Auditions- Open auditions for the award-winning rock band Spectrum Band will be held on Thursday, September 28th after school in the Band Room from 2 to 4 PM. Join the Google classroom for information: Class Code dijh4vk.
