SCHOOL NEWS:

Attention Seniors: the second wave of Capstone presentations will be held on Tuesday, November 14th after school from 2:15-3:15 pm.  In order to present, you must submit your written work to your advisor's google classroom by Friday, November 3rd.  Your adviser will score it and if you earn a score of successful or highly successful you will be eligible to present.   Finally, you must fill out the Google Form that is posted on the Capstone Website to be scheduled for a time slot on the 14th.  Reach out to your adviser with any questions.

Time to clean out those closets and help FBLA students dress for success! FBLA is collecting slightly used business attire to empower our future business leaders. Think dress skirts, blouses, professional trousers, blazers - all in good condition. Let's turn our community into a fashion-forward force for good! Donation bins will be placed outside the cafeteria and in the Annex Room 15. #DressforSuccess

The SWHS Writing Center has re-opened for the year! The Writing Center is a place where you can stop by after school to get one-on-one help with your writing assignments from peer tutors and English teachers. We are open on late bus days (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) from 2-3 pm in Room 136. No appointment is needed. Drop on by for help with your essays, lab reports, QPAs, college essays, and more! If you have questions, please see Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Price, or Mr. Hawie.

Sign up to come to the Writing Center College Writing Workshop on Tuesday 10/25. Held from 2:10-3 PM, there are 3 sessions based on what stage of the writing process you are in. Get help from English teachers and SWHS Writing Center tutors! Sign up using the QR code on the flier in the grade 12 google classroom or in the hallways. Registration is required. Questions? See Mrs. Price, Mrs. Howard, or Mr. Hawie.

Over 30 million blood transfusions are needed in the US each year, and your donation can help to save 3 lives! ATHLETICS:

South Windsor for the Local Kids is hosting a bake sale during the Girls Field Hockey Senior Night game on October 24th at 4:15 on the SWHS Turf field. Come enjoy some delicious baked goodies and cheer on our Bobcats. Proceeds will go to CCMC.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

The French Club “Le Lynx” will meet on Wednesday, October 25th from 2:10 p.m. until the late bus in room 105.  We'll be making crepes with nutella, banana, strawberries and whipped cream. Space is limited to 20 students. See Mr. Ly (Lee) in room 227 to reserve your spot. All are welcome. Bon appétit. 

Chess Club will have its first informational meeting on Monday, October 30th.  This meeting will consist of a general overview of the club, discussions relating to future meeting dates and of course Chess!  If you have any questions, please see Mr. D'Amato in room 161 at 2:00.

It will include detailed overviews of the actuarial profession, job shadows, an interactive insurance game, and other activities. The invitation is open to sophomores, juniors, or seniors who have an interest in pursuing careers in mathematics or statistics. This will be about 4 hours on the morning of Friday, November 17th. Any students interested in attending should see Mrs. Carty by the end of school on Wednesday, October 25th in order to receive registration and log-in information.

On Friday, October 20th, SWHS will hold our annual Homecoming Pep Rally at 1:05 p.m., immediately following period 8. Students with period 8 early release who would like to attend the pep rally must remain at school and sign into the cafeteria during period 8. Students who leave campus will not be permitted to return until after 2 p.m. 

Attention students attending Homecoming: In order to attend after school activities such as the Homecoming football game and dance, students must attend at least half of their class periods on that day.  Advisors and administrators will be checking attendance throughout the day to ensure that all students attending homecoming meet these requirements. In addition, the latest that students can enter the homecoming dance is 8:00 PM. All those arriving after that time will not be permitted.  If students are admitted to the dance and then leave, please know they will not be readmitted into the dance.

The American Mathematics Contest is coming in November! The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.
This year, we will offer both administrations of the test: the AMC 10/12A and the AMC 10/12B!  The AMC 10/12A will be given during the school day on Wednesday, November 8. It will be administered during Period 2 and part of Period 4 in the cafeteria that day.  You will miss these classes and will be marked as ACT (school activity) in Powerschool (you will return to Period 4 after the test is complete and all materials have been collected).
The AMC 10/12B will be given after school on Tuesday, November 14. Students will meet in the SWHS cafeteria at 3:00pm, and we should be done by 5:00pm.  You may take either administration or both (for SWHS students), depending on your goals or availability.  If you are interested in participating, you must first join the AMC 10/12 Google Classroom.  The class code is: dfepcmy. In the classroom, you must fill out the Google Forms to reserve a space for the tests you want to take. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Brindisi in Room 265.

Buy your pumpkins from an FBLA member or during  Period 5 lunch waves from 10/16-10/27. You can buy 1 for $2, 2 for $3 or 3 for $5. They will be delivered on 10/31. See Ms Cruz with questions.

On Wednesday, the SWHS Math Team won their meet against the 20+ schools in the Capital Area Math League, scoring 91 points to best second-place Rocky Hill by 9 points. The three-time defending league champion Bobcats won their 17th consecutive league meet dating back to 2020. Rishabh Mohapatra and Roger Mao had perfect meets, while Aarush Kalia, Mihir Kulkarni, Akshaj Nadimpalli, Shaurya Ranjan, and Pranay Kakkar all had great performances.

Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded Students of the Month for September. These students were nominated by their teachers after demonstrating their commitment to showing attributes of an SWHS portrait of a graduate.

Do you want to learn about Entrepreneurship but were unable to fit the class into your schedule?  Maybe you took Entrepreneurship already but are looking to reconnect with some of the content from class.  Either way, we've got a club for you!  Join us on Thursday, October 19th in Annex 17 from 2:15 - 3:45 PM to enjoy some entrepreneurship talk and a little "Shark Tank" with like-minded peers who are interested in Entrepreneurship but are not currently taking the class.  Our Google Classroom code is 62gclzf.  Bring a snack, relax, and have some fun while learning what makes venture capital such an important part of starting or growing a new business

It’s time to nominate a senior for Homecoming King and Queen. The 8 seniors with the most nominations will move on to the 2023 Homecoming Court which will be announced on October 25th. The form is on the Google Classroom page for your class. Nominations must be entered before Friday, October 13th at 2:00 PM. 
                                                                             
The Student Council needs your help. We are looking for t-shirt designs that encompass the new SWHS campus, incorporating both the high school and annex buildings. The theme is “2 buildings, one community”. We want to stick with school colors of maroon, gold, white and black for the t-shirt and are looking for one design on the front of the shirt. Please submit t-shirt designs by October 13th at 2 pm using the custom link in your Google classroom. See Ms. Ullinger with questions.

The 9th Grade Science teachers would like to invite last year’s participants in the annual 9th Grade Science Fair to enter their projects for an opportunity to submit to the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair. Please check your grade level Google Classroom submission requirements. The google form must be completed by MONDAY, OCT 15. Feel free to contact Mrs. Eitel (Room 205) or Mrs. Davis (205) if you have any questions. 

Thursday, October 12th is PSAT day for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. Students must arrive with a fully charged Chromebook. We also recommend bringing a snack and a drink. A desmos calculator will be provided through the testing platform, or, students may bring their own personal calculator if they prefer. Room assignments will be posted around the school on large posters. See your school counselor with any questions. 
12th grade students are not to report to school unless they are participating in Capstone presentations. We recommend that 12th grade students use this time to work on college application materials or participate in a college visit. 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

Italian Club will meet on Wednesday, October 11th, right after school near the playground outside the Annex.  We will be playing bocce and eating pizza. Please bring  $5  to Mrs. Zaccardelli in Annex Room 35 to save your spot.
