Attention sophomores and juniors - The CATS program is looking for applicants for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have strong leadership qualities and are interested in meeting and welcoming new students into SWHS, pick up an application outside of Mrs. Frasier's Room 143 and drop it off by Friday, February 2. All current members should re-apply via the form on the CATS Google Classroom. 

The Strategy Club will meet after school on THURSDAY this week in Room 146.

Choral Spectrum is raising money this week to support the Thirst Project in building wells for communities without access to drinkable water. You can get involved by participating in the “Change War” happening during lunch waves this week. Each grade has a jar for donations, which will be brought around during lunch and will be available at the back of the cafeteria. Every penny counts. Let's see which grade can raise the most money and help bring something we take for granted to those who truly need it. 

A scholarship reminder – the Big Y scholarship deadline is THIS week.  Applications must be postmarked by February 1 and letters of recommendation are required.  If you haven’t already applied, don’t wait until the last minute.  Applications are available in the Career Center.  Also, don’t forget that the Dollars for Scholars portal is open and your application should be underway.  Please see the Career Center if you need information on how to start the process or if you have any questions as you work on your application.

Attention all Gentlemen of South Windsor High School. Do you have a special talent or comedic ability? Are you interested in winning the crowned title of Mr. South Windsor High School?? Then come out on this Thursday or Friday to audition immediately after school in Room 252 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm either day. You will love this opportunity to do comedic acts and compete with your friends. Signup sheets will be outside Room 252 and on audition days, and in the halls. 

Athletic News:
-Girls’ tennis team will hold an informational meeting for both new and returning members today after school in Room 204. All grades and ability levels are welcome. 

-Boys lacrosse will hold an informational meeting tomorrow night at 6:30pm in the Media Center. Parents are welcome. 

-The girls’ basketball team will be hosting their annual Coaches vs Cancer game when they take on the Enfield High School Eagles this Friday at home.  Please support this great cause by purchasing a Heroes of Hope card for $1 from any of the players to honor someone who has been affected by this terrible disease.  Or come to the game on Friday and purchase something from the bake sale.   All proceeds will be going to the American Cancer Society.  Together we can make a difference.

-The first Unified basketball game will be held in the Wapping School Gymnasium after school today. Come on over to the school just behind SWHS and support your Unified Team.

-All students interested in joining the girls’ tennis team this spring should come to an informational meeting for both new and returning members tomorrow after school in Room 204. All grades and ability levels are welcome. Please see Mrs. Belval in Room 204 if you cannot attend. 

-There will be an informational meeting in the Media Center this Wednesday at 6:30pm for all boys interested in playing boys lacrosse this spring. Parents are welcome.

Unified Theater's 2018 Show, based on the Olympic Games, will start rehearsals soon. Unified Theater is all about inclusion, creativity, and it is entirely student-run…no experience necessary…all are welcome to tryout. Come to the Seminar Room for an informational meeting after school on January 29.

The Teen Center will be closed today and will be open tomorrow from 11:30am - 4:30pm.  Since there is no late bus, students are responsible for getting their own rides home. Please sign up ahead of time at the Teen Center if you plan to attend join us that day for lunch. Cost $5.00.

The Teen Center will be open today during regular hours, 2:00pm – 4:00pm. The Youth Council will be sharing information and activities in recognition of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week. The Teen Center will be closed on Wednesday, January 24, and will be open on Thursday, January 25 from 11:30am - 4:30pm. Since there is no late bus, students are responsible for getting their own rides home. Please sign up ahead of time at the Teen Center if you plan to attend join us that day for lunch. Cost $5.00.

The Olympics are coming to South Windsor High School. Unified Theater's 2018 Show, based on the Olympic Games, will start rehearsals soon. No theater experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome to come and try it out. Unified Theater is all about inclusion, creativity, and it is entirely student-run. There will be an informational meeting after school on January 29, in the school Seminar Room. Snacks will be provided. Let us put the spotlight on you.

Attention seniors: Capstone presentations will take place on Tuesday, January 23 from 12:00pm - 1:15pm. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Walsh or Mr. Richards.

On Wednesday, February 7, South Windsor High School's Industry Advisory Board will be taking a career exploration field trip to the XL Center to go behind the scenes before we see a Wolfpack school-day game. Students interested in pursuing careers in marketing, sports management, travel and tourism should consider attending. The cost of the trip is $25 including lunch. Please see Ms. Festi, Mr. Hodge, or Mrs. Barrett for a field trip permission form. 
 
Gay-Straight Alliance will meets today at 2:00pm in Room 148. We will be taking a group photo for the school yearbook. New members are always welcome, so stop on by.

Yoga Club meets today at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room to practice yoga. All experience levels are welcome and you don't need to be a member of the club to attend.

Last call…there are two upcoming scholarship opportunities for seniors that include the NIAAA Scholarship Essay for Student-athletes and the Bo Kolinsky Scholarship for any senior pursuing a career in journalism. Interested seniors should stop by our athletic director, Mr. Sytulek’s office for further information.

The Students of the Month for December are: Grade 9- Alex Johnsson and Ella Manning; Grade 10- Karen Joy and Jennette Jacobs; Grade 11- Jonathan Ude and Ronnie Pinkard; and Grade 12- Victoria Taylor Orduz and Harold Carvajal. Each of these students was nominated by a teacher who felt that they went above and beyond as a student who exemplifies our academic, social or civic expectations. Congratulations to all!

Attention Seniors: Capstone presentations will take place on Tuesday, January 23 from 12:00pm - 1:15pm. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Walsh or Mr. Richards.

SWHS is administering the American Mathematics Contest on Wednesday, February 7 during Periods 1 and 3 in the cafeteria. The AMC is a national competition consisting of 25 challenging multiple choice problems given over 75 minutes involving a variety of mathematics. There is a version for 9 and 10 graders, and a separate version for 11 and 12 graders with more complex mathematical topics. If you are interested in taking the test, you must sign up with your math teacher by the end of the day TODAY to reserve your spot.

Guess who’s back? The Bowling Club is back, so tell a friend to attend a brief meeting to sign up and register for the second 5 week session. Bowling Club forms will be available after school TODAY from 2:00pm -2:20pm. Please see Mr. Slim-Gray-dy in Room 168 for more information.

Due to yesterday's school closing, the Strategy Club will meet today, after school, in Room 146.

South Windsor Basketball “Bobcat Blackout” T-Shirts will be on sale for $5 each prior to the boys’ basketball game vs. East Catholic at the gymnasium entrance for all fans. Sizes may be limited so please get yours early!

-The girls’ JV basketball team lost to Plainville on Tuesday 37 to 36. Oge Okoh led the Bobcats with 11 points while Jazz Ramirez sparked the defense.

Congratulations to Lauren Crusha and May Harding for winning Gold Key Awards in the Scholastic Art Contest. Lauren's pendant and May's clay coffee set will be exhibited at the University of Hartford until February 3.   

Former South Windsor High School student Mary-Kate Harper will be in the Career Center at 10:30am this morning to talk about her experience as a student at Emmanuel College.  If you are a recent applicant, this is a great opportunity to hear directly from someone who has transitioned from your high school to Emmanuel.

Scholarships are updated in Naviance daily.  There are upcoming deadlines for the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Program and the Big Y scholarship. Female students should look at the Julie Veilleux Scholarship and students pursuing careers in science, medicine, nursing or health should review the Joyce Picard Scholarship. Both of these $1,000 awards are specifically for students residing in South Windsor and are due by February 16.

Girls for Technology presents a Stem Career Accelerator Day on January 27 from 10am – 1pm at the Wilson-Gray YMCA in Hartford. This event is for students in grades 9 to 11. Attendees will learn more about careers in science and IT and will learn how to designing an app, create a business around it and pitch an idea. Lunch is provided. An informational flier with registration information is on the Programs and Events board in the Career Center.

The National Honor Society is sponsoring TWO midterm review sessions for freshman students on Wednesday, January 17 and Thursday, January 18 from 2:00pm – 3:00pm in the cafeteria. Upperclassmen will be available to help students in all subjects and snacks will be provided. Please bring your study guides.

Athletic News:
-There will be a meeting for any girls interested in trying out for Girls Lacrosse after school today in Room 142. Please see Coach Dobosz if you cannot attend. 

- The girls’ JV basketball team was victorious over Holyoke 40 to 26. Jazz Ramirez led all scorers with 11 points while Elizabeth Martinez and Anastasia Assenso combined for 13 points. The defense was sparked by Julie Brady.

A reminder that former SWHS alumna Abby Bonds will visit the Career Center this morning to talk about her experience as a student at Pace University. If you have applied to Pace or are interested in applying, this is a great way to hear about what being a student there is like. Abby will be here at 10:30am this morning.  Students interested in Emmanuel College will have the same opportunity tomorrow.


The Freshman Class of 2021 is holding a fundraiser tonight at a local burger place at 440 Buckland Hills Drive from 12:00pm – 8:00pm. Please show the flyer that is on social media so we can get the proceeds.  

Final reminder…there is a very important meeting for all hosts and parents of the French exchange students tonight at 6:00pm in the Seminar Room.

Fashion Club meets today after school in Room 7 until 3:00pm. Please come prepared to finish the painted shoe project.
