Please note…Monday is a regular start day.  Classes begin promptly at 7:25am.

Picture retake day is Thursday, October 5.  Sign up for a pass in the Main Office beginning Tuesday, October 3 if you have not had your photo taken this year or would like the current photo retaken.

Any students wishing to attend the JETS behind the scenes tour of Met Life Stadium on October 24 must submit permission slips and payment by Monday, October 2.  See Ms. Festi in Room 124 with questions.

Do you love Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter? Join Science Fiction/Fantasy club. Our first meeting will be Monday, October 2. Join us for snacks and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” in Room 127 from 2:00-5:00pm. 

Next week will be very busy in the Career Center - please note the list of colleges visiting in Naviance and sign up if you haven't already done so. We will start off on Monday morning with Central Connecticut State University. Due to the larger attendance for this visit, please report to the Media Center Seminar Room.

If you are a fan of dogs, come see a special demonstration Monday after school from 2:05pm – 2:45pm in the back of the Media Center.  For more information and to sign up, see Mrs. Blocker in Room 131 or send her an email. 

Open auditions for the men’s A Capella ensemble, “Understaffed”, will be held Tuesday, October 3 from 6:30-8:00pm in the Choir Room, Room 4. Audition information and materials are posted on the wall outside the Choir Room. See Mr. Martineau in Room 4 for details.

The Italian Club’s first meeting will be Monday, October 2 right after school until 3:30pm in Mrs. Zaccardelli's Room 226.  Come and have some input into our activities for the year. Join our Google classroom for additional information. New members welcome!

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Jazz Ensemble will be held on October 6 at 2:00pm in Room 4. See Mr. Crowley or Mr. Verrastro for details.

-Please come and cheer on your boys and girls cross country teams this afternoon at Nevers Park as they host the Harry Geraghty Invitational.  They will be competing against 15 other schools from around the state and refreshments will be sold.

The Career Center will round out this week's college visits with the University of Vermont after school today at 2:00pm and a visit from Alfred University tomorrow morning.  As always, please check these and all visits out in Naviance and sign up if you plan to attend.

All three Girls Volleyball teams posted victories last night at Home vs. Rockville. The Freshmen team won 2-0, JV won 2-1 and Varsity 3-0. The team will be home again next Monday, Oct. 2 vs. East Catholic. Hope to see you there!

The South Windsor Public Education Fund is hosting its biennial walkathon, Walking For Our Future, this Saturday, September 30th from 10am-2pm. This is a 2.5 mile walk along Main Street in South Windsor to raise money in support of South Windsor Public Schools. For more information or to register, go to www.swfoundation.org.

Sophomores: “HOBY”……the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Organization is a nationally recognized group dedicated to developing leaders through national conferences and training.  Any Sophomore interested in applying to attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar taking place in the Spring are invited to see Mr. Wry in School Counseling for either an application or more details.

The South Asian Culture Club will meet after school tomorrow in Room 229. New members are always welcome.

Bobcat Bowling Club meets today after school from 2:15-2:45pm in Room 168. See Mr. Gray for more details.

The following colleges will visit the Career Center tomorrow: Grove City College, and Endicott College. Please go to the Media Center Seminar Room if you are attending the Endicott College visit. On Thursday, a representative from the University of Vermont will be here at 2:00pm.

The Big Y Scholarship applications have arrived and can be picked up from the Career Center or downloaded from the Big Y website. Big Y awards over 300 scholarships totaling $250,000 to graduating seniors each year. You do not have to be an employee or related to one. Anyone can apply by the February 1 deadline.

Northeastern University is holding an informational program regarding admissions, financial aid and the application process. The event will be held on Thursday, October 5 from 6:30-8:00pm at Cheshire Academy. More information is at www.northeastern.edu/prospectevents and a poster is hanging by the computers in the Career Center. 

Our planet is in trouble. Species are disappearing, trash and temperatures are increasing. But it’s not too late to help make a change. The CHET Advance Scholarship provides an opportunity for high school seniors and freshmen to win money for their future college plans.  Students must apply by October 3rd at www.chetadvance.com.  There will 100 scholarships awarded to seniors and another 100 scholarships awarded to freshmen through random drawings.  For more information go to the website or check out the brochure on the Scholarship and Aid bulletin board in the Career Center.

-South Windsor varsity field hockey defeated NFA 10-0. They will play Southington away on Tuesday. 

-The girls’ volleyball team faced CCC opponent Tolland at Home on Monday. The freshmen team lost a close match with a score of 2-1, JV won 2-0 and varsity lost 3-0. The team will travel to RHAM tonight and then return home on Wednesday vs. Rockville. Come out and support your Lady Bobcats!

The admissions staffs of Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn, and Stanford will collaborate on an information session entitled "Exploring College Options" on Wednesday, September 27th at 7 p.m. in Farmington.  Students interested in attending may register at www.exploringcollegeoptions.org.  An informational flyer is posted on the Programs and Events bulletin board in the Career Center.
 
Attention all video making enthusiasts…$26,000 dollars in prizes is being offered to you! If you want a chance to win this prize money, then consider entering the Department of Motor Vehicles’ Teen Safe Driving video contest. If you are interested, see Mr Rockey in Room 10 for information and for help with creating a video.
 
Hey foodies!  The Cooking Club will meet next Wednesday, September 27, and our menu will feature Fall Flavors and Spooky Delicious Halloween treats.  Bring $5 to Ms. Cliff or Senora Ruiz by this Friday 9/22 to reserve your spot--we will NOT be accepting late payments next week.  
 
Next week, September 25-29 is National Ally Week.  The South Windsor Gay-Straight Alliance would like to encourage you to stand as an ally for those in our school and community who might not feel like they have a safe space.  Allies can stand beside those in the LGBTQ community, but an ally can be anyone who stands with someone who feels alone or left out.  To help kick off the week, please join us at our celebration of Allies in Room 148 on Monday, September 25th!  Rainbow ribbons will be available for sale during lunch periods -- please wear your ribbon to let those in our community know that you are a safe place for anyone in need.  Want to be bold in making a statement declaring your alliance?  Take a picture or video of your group or department's show of support and share it on the morning news!  We thank you so much for your support, and we look forward to celebrating Ally Week with you!

A reminder to students attending the Providence College visit at 12:30 today - this will take place in the Media Center Seminar Room instead of the Career Center. For any students curious about fall open houses, stop into the Career Center.  Many of them are advertised on posters throughout the room.
 
Seniors, if you were not able to make it to the College Essay Workshops yesterday afternoon, you can still see your school counselor or Mrs. Carty in the Career Center. Stop in or make an appointment for some help.  The Career Center library also has helpful books about writing college essays that you may use or sign out.
 
Music rehearsal for "Annie" will take place today from 2-4pm in room 4.  Again, that is ROOM 4 (Martineau's room!).  Please bring your score, water, and a pencil.  All are called for "Herbert Hoover" except for Warbucks, Grace, and Hannigan.  Full ensemble will be dismissed by 3pm - Bert Healy, Boylan Sisters, and orphans will need to stay until 4pm.  Recordings are posted on Google Classroom -- check them out!

Athletic News:
-The Girls Varsity Soccer team beat Avon yesterday by a score of 2-1.  Rachel Coulter scored on an assist from Jaylene Ferrabelo in the first half and Karly Suppicich had the game winner in the second.  Rachel Drouin and Maddie Westfall had outstanding performances for the Bobcats, while Jianna Mitchell had 7 saves to preserve the win.  The girls’ next game will be Thursday night against Tolland, match start time will be 6PM.
-Varsity field hockey defeated Wethersfield 8-0 with a great team effort. The team will take on EO Smith on Wednesday away.

Bryant University will visits the Career Center today at 11 a.m. It is not too late to attend!  Please come to the Career Center to meet the representative if you are interested in applying to Bryant or just want to learn more about the university.
 
A representative from Nichols College will visit the Career Center Wednesday morning. A representative from Providence College will be in the Media Center Seminar Room at 12:30pm.  Please sign up in Naviance for these visits so we can track attendance.
 
Are you a sophomore, junior or senior budding entrepreneur? Does the idea of winning a scholarship to Seton Hall University interest you? If so, check out the Pirates Pitch Competition sponsored by the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University. Submit an original business idea that, in 350 words or less, describes an innovative product or service that you would like to create or have already created. Submission deadline is October 18th. Athletic News:
-The Girls’ Volleyball team ran into a tough CCC opponent last night when they traveled to Avon. The JV and freshmen teams lost 2-0 and varsity lost 3-1. The team will be home twice this week first on Wednesday vs. Berlin and Tolland on Friday. Hope to see you there!

School spirit shirts will be sold by BPO this week. We will be collecting money and order forms in lunch waves until Wednesday. If you did not receive an order form in Homeroom, please get one in the Main Office.

Junior or senior girls interested in the field of engineering are encouraged to attend the 3rd annual Women in Engineering Day, hosted by UConn School of Engineering on Thursday, September 28th. The day provides an opportunity to meet with top female engineering students, discover more about careers from female industry professionals and School of Engineering faculty, take a tour, and attend lunch with current students. A poster is displayed on the Programs & Events board in the Career Center or visit wie.uconn.edu for more information and to register as soon as possible. Space is limited!

-There will be an informational boys’ basketball meeting for all returning players only today at 4:00pm in Room 102 at SWHS. Any returning players unable to attend, should contact Coach Dargati or Coach Waters.

-The Girls' Varsity Soccer defeated Windsor by a score of 7-0 on Friday.  Tri-Captain Rachel Coulter guided the defense while goals came from Karly Suppicich, Lindsay Fishman, Olivia Besthoff, Rachel Drouin, Emilee Gebhart and Caitlin Sauer.  The Bobcats face their toughest opponent of the early season on Tuesday when they play Avon at home. Please come out and support the team!

Tufts University offers students from underrepresented communities an overnight visit to campus and the opportunity to experience all facets of college life.  The Voices of Tufts Diversity Experiences take place during two sessions in October – one for engineering and one for arts and sciences. If you are interested in this program, please see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center for details.  Applications are due in early October.

The admissions staffs of Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn, and Stanford will collaborate on an information session entitled "Exploring College Options" on Wednesday, September 27th at 7 p.m. in Farmington.  Students interested in attending may register at www.exploringcollegeoptions.org.  An informational flyer is posted on the Programs and Events bulletin board in the Career Center.

-Varsity Field Hockey tied Conard 0-0 after one overtime. The team plays Wethersfield at home next Tuesday, but will rematch Conard at home on October 17th for their breast cancer awareness game. Come support the team and help raise money for breast cancer research.
