HOMECOMING TICKET SALES - The Homecoming Dance is nearly here. Tickets for the event are $10 and can ONLY be purchased online at TicketLeap.com (search SWHS Homecoming). Sales will open FRIDAY, October 19, until Wednesday, October 24, or sooner if they sell out. IF you are planning on bringing a guest, you MUST obtain a Guest Form from the main office (or online through school site) and have it fully authorized by Wednesday, October 17, prior to purchasing any tickets.  Fully completed forms should be turned in to Mr. Eppler in the Math Office upstairs.

Students in grades 10-12 will attend the SWHS College and Post-Secondary Fair tomorrow during an extended period 1. Over 135 colleges, military representatives, vocational schools and employers will be in attendance. You should have received a guide to the fair in your homeroom, but if you did not, please come down to School Counseling to pick one up.

Today’s visits to the Career Center are from the CT Army National Guard and Trinity College. 

Do you enjoy writing your own Science Fiction or Fantasy stories? The next Science Fiction/Fantasy club meeting is Thursday, October 18 in room 127. We will have a writer's workshop where you have time to write and share your work. New and returning members are welcome.

Art Club will be having its first meeting on Thursday, October 18 afterschool in room 7 for all interested in creating and experimenting with new mediums and ideas. Please see Mr. Zilinski if you have any questions.

UConn will hold an Open House program on Sunday, October 21 from 9 am to 3 pm.  For more information and to register, visit openhouse.uconn.edu.

The first session of the Jump Start Tutoring Program will start soon. Please pick up an application from the counseling office and return it by Friday, October 19. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in our community so get your application today.

There will be an FBLA meeting in room 122 on this Thursday, October 18th at 2:00 pm.

There will be an informational SWHS gymnastics meeting for any girls interested TODAY, October 17 at 2:15 pm in room 111. Leotard sizes will also be taken at this time.

South Windsor For The Kids club is having their second meeting this Thursday, October 18 in the cafeteria.

Any seniors applying to colleges with a November 1 deadline need to have their transcript request forms submitted to School Counseling by this Thursday, October 18.  Please make note of your application deadlines.

Team 177 Bobcat Robotics will be having another meeting on Thursday October 18. We are looking for students interested in engineering, programming, business, manufacturing and so much more. Come see what we are all about. New members are welcome, even if you have not attended a meeting yet. We will meet from 5:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, October 18th in room 12. 

Rein’s Deli in Vernon is hiring several positions including Line Cook, Prep Cooks, Bakers, Dishwashers, Servers, Bussers, Cashiers and Hosts. Positions are full-time and part-time and during a variety of days and times. A flier with details is hanging on the board in the Career Center.

Did you know that one pint of blood can save up to three lives? The South Windsor High School Blood Drive will be held on Wednesday, November 7. If you are interested in donating, please fill out the form posted on the grade level google classrooms or sign up during 5th period lunch waves this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Remember, it only takes 15 minutes to save a life.

Fashion Club will have its first meeting this Thursday after school until 3:00pm. We will be designing baseball caps for our first project. You can paint, draw with fabric markers, or add embellishments. New members are welcome to join us for this and more fun projects throughout the year.

Sophomores- “HOBY”……the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Organization is a nationally recognized group dedicated to developing leaders through national conferences and training. Any Sophomore interested in applying to attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar taking place in the Spring are invited to see Mr. León in School Counseling for either an application or more details.

The sophomore class is hosting a fundraiser at a local frozen yogurt store at The Plaza at Buckland Hills tonight, October 16 from 6:00-9:00pm. Just mention the SWHS Class of 2021! Please come out and support the class and eat some great frozen yogurt!

Reminder to all bowlers: Today is the first day the bowling club will roll. Anyone who needs transportation to the bowling alley must get a bus pass from Mrs. Richardson in the side office before the end of lunch.

To all Seniors: The first presentation date for Capstone is November 6. Remember to be eligible to present you must submit all written work to your adviser by October 23. You must receive a successful score or higher on all written work. Your adviser will complete a form that you will bring to presentations verifying all work is complete and of passing quality. You must pick this form up from your adviser. Finally, a google form will be posted on Monday October 22 for you to start signing up to present.

Athletic News:

Last Friday, the Boys’ Soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to Farmington. While they moved the ball well, they could not get enough shots off to pressure the Indians. Thanks for all of the fans who showed up to cheer us on. The Bobcats look to rebound today at home vs. Enfield.

The Girl’s Volleyball team took home a big win on Friday both for volleyball and with their Dig Pink charity proceeds. The team swept against Enfield, with 2-0 wins for the JV and Freshman teams, and varsity winning 3-0. The amount of the donations collected that night was about $2,000! A huge thanks and congrats to all who came and contributed to the Sideout Foundation charity, it was a great success. The Varsity team also put up a fight to win big against Maloney of Meriden last night, winning 3-2. That win qualifies the team for the Class LL state tournament next month. They will be home again tomorrow night when they face Hall. Congrats again, good luck to the team.

Mind's Eye will be hosting its first Coffee House on Wednesday, October 17 from 6pm-8pm in the library. There will be an open mic for people to play music or read poetry or short fiction. You can also just come to listen. We hope to see you there!

Athletic News:
The Girls Volleyball won big on their "Dig Pink" for breast cancer awareness match by winning with a clean sweep of Enfield Friday night. The JV and Freshman teams won 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. The team will be home again tonight vs. Maloney of Meriden. The players and coaches want to say Thanks to all of the students, friends, and staff members who attended the Enfield match to support the players and a great charity. Congratulations and we hope to see you again tonight!

Students interested in earning Manchester Community College Credit for articulated courses here at South Windsor High School must register with MCC by Friday, October 19th. Students should see Dr. Bombara, in the Counseling office with any registration issues.

If you would like a chance to win some of the $26,000 dollars in prize money available to teenagers, then the Teen Safe Driving Contest is for you. The CT DMV and Travelers Insurance are sponsoring a video contest and you could win. See Mr. Rockey in room 10 for more information. 

The next Italian Club meeting will be Monday, October 15 from 2:00-4:00 in room 105. We'll be baking Italian desserts. Look up and print out any Italian dessert recipes you're interested in to give to Mrs. Zaccardelli in 226. Bring in $5 to save your spot in the kitchen. Space is limited

For all students who successfully enrolled in this year’s SWHS-UConn ECE program, please check your email account or your UConn SAS account for your course fee bill. They are due by November 15 to avoid a late fee.

Do you want to improve your flexibility? Do you want to relieve stress? Try Yoga. The Yoga Club meets Mondays at 2:15pm in the Chorus room. No experience is necessary just wear comfortable clothing and give it a try. See Ms. Lane in room 6 with any questions.

If you are interested in a career in fire, emergency medical services, emergency management or public safety communications, the Connecticut Fire Academy is holding the 2018 Fire Service College Fair tomorrow, October 13 from 9:00am – 3:00pm at 34 Perimeter Road in Windsor Locks.  Admission is free and refreshments are provided. A flier is hanging in the Career Center if you would like to take a photo or make a copy.

There will only be one college visiting on Monday. Roanoke College will be in the Career Center at 11:45am. The college fair will take place next Thursday, October 18th.  All sophomores, juniors and seniors will attend.

Anyone who was planning to attend the Young Eagles Rally at Meriden-Markham Airport last weekend can try again this weekend. The event was cancelled and will be held on its scheduled rain date, tomorrow October 14. For a copy of the original flyer with times and location, visit the Programs and Events board in the Career Center.

The FIRST robotics meeting will be on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 in room 12 for all new and returning members

The Strategy Club will meet downstairs, in room 7, this Thursday. We will feature a variety of spooky, Halloween inspired games this week.

Do you enjoy helping others? Do you have 2 hours a week to volunteer your time? Do you want to give back to your community? If you answered YES to these questions, then stop by the Guidance Office and pick up an application for the Jump Start Tutoring Program. You can volunteer to help middle school students with their homework, study for tests and complete projects. The program will starts Thur., Oct. 25th, so pick up an application soon and be a part of Jump Start!

The South Windsor High School Holiday Hoopla event will be on Saturday, November 17, from 9 to 3. Any club or group who is interested in having a table at this event please contact Dawna Cavagnaro at [email protected]. Tables are going fast. Vendors book one soon.

Trinity College is offering a free course entitled “Photographing Your Environment” which covers the basics of photography and learning about environmental issues. You do not need a camera to take the course. The registration deadline is October 12. To register, visit www.conservationeducation.org and look for the class advertised under Recent News.

The Career Center is open for college visits again today. We will close out the week tomorrow with visits from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Pomona College, Emerson College, and Nova Southeastern University. Be sure to check Naviance for the latest list of upcoming college visits.

The SWHS Math Team started its competition season off with a bang on Wednesday, beating over 20 teams in the Capitol Area Math League to win the first meet of the season. Perfect meets were achieved by 9th graders Aryan Kalia, Jaideep Naik, and Michael Ngo. Keshav Ramesh, Pranav Ramesh, and Jason Rickenbacher also turned in great performances for the Bobcats.

Athletic News:
The Girls’ Volleyball team will be in the cafe selling tickets to their annual "Dig Pink" for breast cancer awareness. The match will be at home vs. Enfield this Friday, Oct. 12th. Tickets are $2 pre-sale and $4 at the door. Please wear pink ,support our team and a great cause. All proceeds will be donated to the "Sideout Foundation" for breast cancer. Start time is 5 pm for the JV and Freshman teams with Varsity to follow.

Athletic News:

Congratulations to the Girls Volleyball team for their tough play last night at E.O. Smith. The freshman and JV teams both lost in close games 2-0, and 2-1 respectively with Varsity turning around a game 1 loss to win the match 3-1. The team was led by outstanding all-around play by Selena Guo who had 17 kills and 18 digs for the night. The team will host Enfield Friday with a 5 pm JV/Freshmen team start time.

Mind's Eye will hold a brief meeting after school Thursday, October 11 in room 129. Members who are unable to attend should stop by Ms. Flachsbart's room any day before then. 

There will be a Girls Lacrosse meeting on Tuesday, March 9 in room 142 for any girls interested in playing in the winter lacrosse league at the East Windsor Bubble.

Hey Bobcat Foodies! There will be a Cooking Club planning meeting on Wednesday, October 10 after school for all officers and anyone else interested in choosing delicious Thanksgiving recipes. Our cooking session will take place on October 24. Please reserve your spot by giving $5 to Ms. Cliff or Sra. Ruiz.  

Unified Sports will have its first home soccer tournament against East Windsor, Suffield, and Rockville today from 2:45-4:15pm. Come out to support them as they kick off their season!

On Thursday, the Boys Soccer team played a great game to beat E.O. Smith 3-0. Dan Monteserin scored two goals and Mitchell Lyons scored one. Dmitri Tenn and Mitchell Lyons had the assists. Hunter Pasqualini and Jake Waterhouse combined for two saves and their 8th consecutive shutout. The boys play Rocky Hill Tuesday at home. Please come out to support them!

The Girls Volleyball team traveled to Glastonbury taking on a top CCC team. The Freshman team lost 2-1, JV lost 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. The team will travel again to play E.O. Smith tonight. Good luck to the team and we hope to see you there.

The Varsity Girls' Soccer team moves their record to 6 to 2 after beating E.O. Smith on Friday by a score of 5-1. Taylor Patitucci had a goal and an assist, as did Lindsay Fishman, Karly Suppicich netted two, Caitlin Sauer also scored while Emilee Gebhart had an assist. Maria Galley had five saves for the shutout while Ella Manning and Maddie Westfall played solid on defense. They will play this Friday under the lights at Rye Street at 6pm, please come out and support them.

Field hockey defeated Northwest Catholic 1-0 on Friday. They will take on Hall at home on Tuesday at 3:45pm.

Any student planning on going on the St. Francis Hospital Field Trip with Dr. Bombara should turn in their permission slips as soon as possible.

Manchester Community College’s Excursions in Learning Program is offering two babysitting safety, CPR and first aid classes for students in grades 5-12. Dates are November 3 or November 17 from 9am to 2pm. The course costs $70. Register before October 10 to save $5. This is NOT an official certification course. Carnegie Mellon University will hold an information session with admission staff on Sunday, October 7 at 2pm at the Hartford Marriott Farmington. To register, visit the Carnegie Mellon admission website or see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center.

Due to the long weekend, our next college visits will not take place until Tuesday, October 9. They will be Kalamazoo College, Springfield Technical Community College, Boston College and Drexel University. Take advantage of the long weekend to work on your CommonApp and college essays!

FBLA will be having our first meeting and pizza party today, Thursday, October 4th at 2:00 in room 122. New people and members are welcome. People who are running for President - please come with a speech. You will give your speech in the beginning of the meeting and people will vote.

The next Italian Club meeting will be Monday, October 15th from 2-4 in room 105. We'll be baking up some Italian desserts. Look up and print out Italian dessert recipes you're interested in. Give to Mrs. Zaccardelli in 226. Bring in $5 to save your spot in the kitchen on the 15th. Space is limited

Athletic News:
The girl’s volleyball team traveled to East Catholic last night and ended all 3 matches with close scores. The Freshmen team lost 2-1, JV won 2-1 and Varsity lost 3-2. The team will travel to play Glastonbury Friday night.

The Student Council meeting is postponed to October 11th at 2:10pm in room 163. New members welcome! We will be discussing spirit wear and our upcoming goals.

The anti-stress club will be playing Dodgeball after school this Thursday, October 4th in the gym.

The Robotics club will be having a meeting after school on Thursday, October 4th. This meeting is for students who are interested in joining Bobcat Robotics. Please come to the meeting if you are interested in joining the team. We will start the meeting at 2:10pm in room 12. 

The Science Fiction/Fantasy club will hold its next meeting next Thursday, October 11th in room 127 from 2-5pm. Join us for snacks while we watch and discuss Pirates of the Caribbean.

Congratulations to this year's first group of Students of the Month. They are students who have made a positive impression on peers and teachers, and who have shown excellence in academic, social and civic behaviors during the month of September. The students of the month are: Pranav Ramesh Grade 9, Maria Galley Grade 9, Ashna Prakash Grade 10, Nahzyr Hughes Grade 10, Asha Nahar Grade 11, Acquil Williams Grade 11, Allie Fielding Grade 12, and Ari Cohen Grade 12. Congratulations again to all these students.

FBLA will be having our first meeting and our pizza party on this Thursday, October 4th at 2:00pm in room 122. New people and members are welcome. People who are running for President - please come with a speech. You will give your speech in the beginning of the meeting and the people will vote. Thank you. See you there.

Manchester Community College’s Excursions in Learning Program is offering two babysitting safety, CPR and first aid classes for students in grades 5-12. Dates are November 3 or November 17 from 9am to 2pm. The course costs $70. Register before October 10 to save $5. This is NOT an official certification course. For more information, see that Programs and Events board in the Career Center.

Carnegie Mellon University will hold an information session with admission staff on Sunday, October 7 at 2pm at the Hartford Marriott Farmington. To register, visit the Carnegie Mellon admission website or see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center.

The following college visits will take place in the Career Center tomorrow: Colby-Sawyer College, Central CT State University, Cedar Crest College, Washington College. Continue to sign up in Naviance for these visits. It is very helpful to know whether students are interested in meeting with the representative.

Unified Sports will have its first home soccer tournament against East Windsor, Suffield, and Rockville on Tuesday, October 9th from 2:45-4:15pm. Come out to support them as they kick off their season!!

Athletic News:

The girls swim team proved themselves victorious after winning an exciting meet against East Catholic. It all came down to the final 400 Free Relay, in which Crystal Arn-Hetrich, Emma Hapkiewitcz, Kellie Sartoris and Alanna Mawhinney secured the win with a first place finish. Standout performances from last night include Sarah Mulcahy, who won the 100 butterfly. Great job ladies!!

Varsity field hockey tied Enfield 0-0. The team played tremendous in the rain, and was close to a win before the game was called due to thunder with 20:22 left. They take on Northwest Catholic on Friday away.
