Students who are attending the art field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC on Thursday, November 15, please come to a mandatory meeting after school today, November 14 in room 121. We will be discussing the itinerary and what to bring on the day of the trip.

A reminder to all who have signed up for Friday's ASVAB exam: You are to report to the Seminar Room by 7:25 am Friday morning. Students may still sign up for the ASVAB - if you are interested, please come to School Counseling by Thursday morning. If you have questions, see Dr. LaRochelle in School Counseling.

The Ellington YMCA has a high demand for lifeguards. If you do not have lifeguard training, but are interested in receiving it, they offer reimbursement for your training after a successful period of employment. Information on the upcoming training sessions and the job posting are on the Programs and Events board in the Career Center.

Seniors applying to colleges with December 1 deadlines, please note that transcript request forms are due no later than Thursday, November 15 to the School Counseling office in order to be processed in time.

Becker College and Post University will visit the Career Center tomorrow. Please see Mrs. Carty if you still need your pass to attend.

FBLA members: Thursday, November 15 is National Enterprise Day. There will be a mandatory meeting in the Cafe at 2:00 pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Many area businesses are coming in share their expertise with you. There will be give-a-ways and raffles. Please plan on attending. NO excuses please. Dress is business casual attire - no jeans or sneakers.

The Science Fiction/Fantasy club will hold its next meeting on Thursday, November 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Join us for time to write your own creative fiction in room 127. New and returning members welcome.

Athletic surveys for all fall athletes of Football, Field Hockey, Boys & Girls Soccer and Girls Swimming will be held on Thursday, November 15 in the SWHS gym from 2:10 - 2:40 pm. Varsity, JV and freshman athletes of these sports are encouraged to attend. Please bring your Chromebooks.

Attention members and potential members of Bobcat Robotics: we will be meeting on Thursday, November 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in room 12. See you there!

The post-season Girls Varsity volleyball team members will meet their coach in the gym today, November 14 after school starting at approximately 2:15 pm until 4:00 pm. Please bring your uniforms to return and practice clothes if you want to stay around and play after your personal meeting with your coach is completed. Any questions see either Coach Holt or Coach Charter.

There will be a Young Eagles Rally at Meriden-Markham Airport on Saturday, November 17 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Visitors ages 8 to 17 will be able to take a free flight and see what real pilots do before, during and after a flight. Bring a parent or guardian and register at the event. The rain date is November 18 and fliers are available in the Career Center.

The SWHS National Honor Society offers a FREE tutoring service to all students. This program is available to any student in need of help at any time throughout the school year. Students can contact National Honor Society directly by filling out the Google form. Parents can request a tutor by emailing NHS directly at [email protected]. The specifics can be found on the SWHS home page. Don't fall behind, get extra help if you need it!

SADD is collecting new socks for Hands on Hartford, an Anti-poverty agency in Hartford, which distributes clothes to the homeless. As the temperature begins to drop, please remember those less fortunate by donating a pair of socks. A collection hamper is located outside of School Counseling.

Italian Club will meet today, November 12 right after school in room 226.  We'll be playing Italian games and having snacks. 

Students attending the Bobcat Leaders for Inclusion Conference should be receiving their permission slips today during homeroom. The deadline for handing these in has been extended to Thursday, November 15. Please be sure to get them signed and put into the folder outside of room 144.

SADD is collecting new socks for Hands on Hartford, an Anti-poverty agency in Hartford, which distributes clothes to the homeless. As the temperature begins to drop, please remember the less fortunate by donating a pair of socks. A collection hamper is located outside of School Counseling.

Please take note that there is a NEW policy for attending college visits in the Career Center. In order to attend, students are required to have a signed permission slip for classes they will miss during the college visit. Mrs. Carty will send permission slips to homeroom for students who have signed up in Naviance at least 2 days in advance. Otherwise, students can pick up a permission slip from the Career Center in enough time to complete it before the visit. Students arriving to a visit without a slip will be sent back to the Career Center for a slip or will return to their class and miss the visit.

On November 16, South Windsor High School will offer the ASVAB exam. While this is a required test for entrance into the military, it is also a valuable test to explore potential career possibilities. If you have questions about the ASVAB test, please see Dr. LaRochelle in School Counseling.

The Teen Center will be closed today, November 12.

Athletic News:

The girls who qualified for State Trials on the Women's Swim and Dive Team had an amazing meet on Saturday. Every girl who swam an individual event placed in the top 24 for their event and secured a spot at State Finals on Tuesday night at Southern Connecticut State University. Shout out to Alanna Mawhinney for setting a new school record for the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.99, as well as captain Kellie Sartoris for dropping 18 seconds off of her 500 freestyle. Great job ladies!

Today is the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I.

The Unified Theatre Board reminds all teachers and club advisors to nominate their club leaders for the Bobcat Leaders for Inclusion Conference. Permission slips need to be distributed as soon as possible and must be returned to Mrs. White by today, November 9.

Calling all writers: the Scholastic Writing Awards is accepting submissions until December 4. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a national program that recognizes student achievement in writing and art. If you're interested in submitting original poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, or other work, please see your English teacher for more information or visit www.artandwriting.org.

If you have ever considered art school or a career in art, a representative from Hartford Art School will offer a presentation in the Career Center Monday morning at 8:45 am.  If you would like to attend this session, see Mrs. Carty to pick up a permission slip pass for classes you will miss.

Athletic News:

The Girls’ Volleyball team lost a hard fought battle against Southington last night in the Class LL State Tournament. They were led by Senior Co-captain Selena Guo with 18 defensive digs. The players and coaches would like to thank all the staff and students who have supported them this season. Congratulations to the team for a fun and competitive year, and best of luck to the seniors. 

Field hockey lost 0-1 in second round of States but they had a tremendous season and played a great game. Goalie Sarah Gallagher had 28 saves in the loss.

The South Windsor High School Holiday Hoopla event will be on Saturday, November 17 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Any club or group who is interested in having a table at this event please contact Dawna Cavagnaro at [email protected]. Tables are going fast. Vendors book one soon.

Saint Anselm College will be in the Career Center tomorrow at 11:45 am. If you have not already gotten your pass to visit, please see Mrs. Carty. The Hartford Art School will be here Monday morning and offer a presentation for students interested in pursuing art as a career. If you would like to attend, be sure to sign up in Naviance so you can get your pass.

Yesterday (Wednesday), the Math Team competed in their second meet of the season, placing a close third out of over 20 teams heading into the team round. Perfect meets were achieved by Keshav Ramesh, Aryan Kalia, Michael Ngo, Anthony Chen, Samantha Donovan, and Samantha West.

Athletic News:
Sarah Gallagher has been named a finalist for the CT Varsity Athlete of the Week award. Please vote for Sarah at www.courant.com/ctvarsity. Voting will last through Sunday at midnight. Vote often and help our field hockey goalie win Athlete of the Week.

The Boys Soccer team defeated #29 Kennedy on Monday afternoon by a score of 3-0. Goals were scored by Mitchell Lyons, Jared Caroline and Nick Gattuso. The boys play #13 Conard today at 2:00 pm on the SWHS Stadium Turf. Please come out and support the team!

There will be a bereavement ceremony for Ali Pahore on Wednesday, November 7 at 4:15 pm. Ali was a member of the Class of 2020 and the South Windsor High School Symphonic Band. Sadly, he passed away on December 28, 2017 after a long, courageous battle with Leukemia. The ceremony will be held at the Memorial Garden in the front of the school. All are welcome to celebrate Ali’s life.

Today marks the start of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The five-day fete is India's biggest and brightest national holiday and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. It’s as important to Hindus as Christmas is to Christians, and it marks the start of a new financial year for Indian businesses worldwide.

Each team member must sign up by November 7 by filling out the google form located on the google classroom page for your designated class. Entry fee is at least one non-perishable food item per team member. There will be a maximum of 50 participants, so sign up now to reserve your spot.

Remember – with the new attendance policy in the Career Center, you must obtain a permission slip in advance of these visits from Mrs. Carty if you did not already received one in your homeroom.

The team will now travel to play Southington Thursday night at 6:00 pm. Hope you will come out and cheer on your fellow Bobcats.

Field Hockey defeated Watertown 3-1. The team will travel to Guildford on Thursday for the second round of States.

Athletic News: 

The Varsity Girls' Soccer team will play the opening round tournament game today at 2:00 pm vs. Hamden at home on the Stadium field. Please come out and support the Bobcats as they start their tournament run.

The Girls Volleyball team will play at home today against Staples of Westport in the first round of the State Tournament. Our Bobcats are ranked 16th and Staples 17th. This should be a fun, competitive match so we hope you will come out and cheer on your fellow Bobcats.

The Varsity Boys’ Soccer team will play in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday at 2:00 pm on the Multipurpose Field. Please come out and support them!

The Girls Swim team placed third at their CCC meet on Friday. Congratulations to the girls for an amazing season with a final record of 7-3. Special shout-out to Emma Hapkiewicz who received an all All-Conference title after winning the 500 freestyle. 11 girls have qualified for States, which will take place this Saturday at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford.

Athletic News:
Congrats to the Boys Soccer team, who beat East Hartford 1-0 on Wednesday. It was their 14th win of the season, ALL of them by shutout. With the win, the boys dominated division play and won the CCC East league. The boys will play in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday at 2:00 pm on the Multipurpose Field. Please come out and support them!

The Science Fiction/Fantasy club has a meeting today, November 1 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm in room 127. Join us while we watch and discuss Thor. New and returning members are welcome.

Student Council will be having a meeting for all representatives today at 2:10 pm in room 163. We will be discussing goals for the next few months. New members welcome.

Attention students: The library will be closed Monday, November 5 from 7:30 am - 12:00 pm. Please plan accordingly.

The South Windsor High School Holiday Hoopla event will be on Saturday, November 17, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Any club or group who is interested in having a table at this event please contact Dawna Cavagnaro at [email protected]. Tables are going fast. Vendors book one soon.

Save the date!  The next Italian Club meeting will be Monday, November 12 right after school in room 226. We'll be playing Italian games and having snacks. Please see Mrs. Zaccardelli if you plan on attending.

The final visit to the Career Center this week will be Lasell College. The representative will be here tomorrow at 12:45 pm.

SWHS Women’s STEM day is this Monday, November 5 from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in the Auditorium. If you are interested in learning about career opportunities in STEM related fields, you can sign up in Google Classroom no later than Friday, November 2 by noon.

All members of the girls JV and Freshman volleyball teams will have personal meetings with their coach and return uniforms on Thursday, November 1 from approximately 2:15-3:15 pm in the gym. If you have a question or conflict, contact your Coach.
