Students interested in learning more about the Peace Corps – how to enter, what kind of experiences to expect, what a life in global service is like – can speak to a local Peace Corps member who is home for the holidays.  Please come to the Career Center during 6th period TODAY to meet and hear from her.  

Attention all students interested in the Travel Club's trip to California this summer.  There will be a short informational meeting on Wednesday, January 3 starting at 2:10pm in Room 233 for all students.  If you can't attend this meeting please see Señora Ruiz in Room 233.

Reminder…Longo Claus and Elf Carlson will be visiting SWHS tomorrow during all four lunch waves for their annual fundraiser which benefits the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. For only one dollar, you can get your picture taken with them during your lunch time. If you are camera shy, please donate any amount you can afford to the foundation.

Attention all students! Students from Mrs. Belval’s Allied Health class have created a project where we need you to send in pictures of what you do that helps you cope with stress! Please send in your pictures to [email protected] by January 5!!

The Strategy Club will meet today after school in Room 146.

The Cooking Club will meet today after school in Room 105. We are sold out for this month, so if you didn't reserve your spot yet, see Ms. Cliff or Sra. Ruiz to be first in line for our next session in February.

It's that time of year again!  Longo Claus and Elf Carlson will be visiting SWHS Thursday during all four lunch waves. For only one dollar, you can get your picture taken with them during your lunch time. All proceeds will be donated to the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. If you are camera shy, please donate any amount you can afford to the foundation.

Reminder: Rho Kappa will meet in Room 166 after school today. This is a mandatory meeting for all recent inductees of Rho Kappa, National Social Studies Honor Society.

The SWHS Mock Trial team competed in the regional round of the state competition over the last two weeks. Despite strong performances, the team split its case presentations and did not advance to the quarterfinals.  Thanks to all who participated in this great activity and best of luck to our senior lawyers: Asli Awale, Hannah Liebowitz and Bazila Munir!

The online application deadline for the Hartford Foundation College Scholarship Program is January 15. Go to http://www.hfpgscholarships.org to search an entire database of funds. Basic criteria include living in the Greater Hartford Region, entering a 4 year college or university full-time, ranking in the top third of your class, active in school or community, and having financial need. Up to 50 renewable awards of $3,000 are given annually. The Hartford Foundation site also lists additional scholarships for students planning to attend 2 year college programs as well as individual scholarships with deadlines into February. Please see Mrs. Carty if you need assistance searching the HFPG database.

There will be a Student Council meeting for all representatives today in Room 163 after school.
                                                                         
The Science Fiction/Fantasy Club meets today for a writer's workshop from 2:00pm – 4:00pm pm in Room 127. Whether you like writing short stories, novels, scripts, or poetry, you are welcome… join us!

This year, our school’s National Honor Society is expanding its tutoring program to cover all subjects and to span the whole school year. If you are looking to receive extra help from one of your peers in NHS for free, please email [email protected].

Attention all freshman, our last CATS late arrival meeting is this Monday, December 18. We look forward to seeing you there!

Do you enjoy writing your own Science Fiction or Fantasy? Join the Science Fiction/Fantasy club on Monday December 18 for a writer's workshop from 2:00pm – 4:00pm pm in Room 127. Enjoy taking the time to write and share with others. Whether you like writing short stories, novels, scripts, or poetry, you are welcome! Snacks will be provided.

Yoga Club will meet on Monday at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room to practice yoga. Yoga is good for relieving stress, calming the mind, and strengthening the body. All experience levels are welcome! For more information contact Ms. Lane.

-This is a reminder for captains or seniors of winter sports teams to provide Assistant Athletic Director, Mike Bullock with a DVD of your warm-up music to be reviewed prior to your first game. No music will be allowed for warm-ups unless it has been approved first.

-On Monday the JV Girls Basketball team lost to Farmington 32-26. Emily Martinez led all scorers with 11 points while Grace Martin chipped in with 6 points of her own. They play at Manchester on Friday.

Graduation Cap & Gown measurements:  This year we will be asking seniors to report their height and weight to University Cap and Gown online. A link will be posted on the Class of 2018 website and on the 2018 Google Classroom page. The link will be open from December 11 to December 22. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Mazzonna ([email protected]) or Ms. Andrews ([email protected]). 

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Hartford Alumnae Chapter has opened the application process for its 2018 scholarships.  Awards are available for female, African-American students with at least a 3.0 GPA and involvement in community service.  Information on the scholarship, including a link to the application, can be found in Naviance. The scholarship deadline is February 28. Please see Mrs. Carty if you need assistance.

Mind's Eye will host a winter wonderland coffeehouse in the library this coming Wednesday, December 13, at 6:00pm. Come and perform your music, writing, comedy, or any other talent at our open mic, or just come for the treats and to support your friends! All are welcome!

Seniors who ordered gift cards can pick them up during homeroom today, Monday, or Tuesday in the Math office (Room 258).

The 2nd Session of the Jump Start Tutoring Program starts in January. Do you have 2 hours a week available to volunteer and give back to your community? If yes, then join us on Thursday afternoons at TEMS. You will be matched with a middle school student and you will assist them with their homework, studying for exams and working on projects. Transportation is provided. Applications are now available in the High School Counseling Office and are due back by 12/15.

The Teen Center will host local organization “Welcome 2 Reality” during high school drop in hours after school today.  Stop in at 2:30pm to hear their informative presentation on the impact of social media on youth.  This presentation is free and sponsored by the Teen Center Youth Council. Please note this is the main activity at the teen center on Thursday -in place of the regular drop in.  Please plan accordingly.  

Skiers and Boarders…permission slips and payment for the Jay Peak trip are due tomorrow!  Turn them in to Ms. Andrews in Room 234C or Mrs. Lynch in Room 254.
