February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: 
Mae Jemison. Mae Jemison became the first woman of color to travel into space on September 12, 1992 when she rocketed into Earth orbit on an 8 day mission aboard the spacecraft, Endeavor.  Prior to being approved for astronaut training for NASA, Mae was a physician who earned her medical degree from Cornell and served in the Peace Corps in Africa.

Please join the Freshman Class of 2021 for a fundraiser at a local frozen yogurt establishment at the Plaza at Buckland Hills in Manchester tonight from 6-9 pm. See you there.

The Science Fiction/Fantasy Club will meet Monday in Room 127. Join us for snacks while we watch and discuss Interstellar.  New members are welcome.

Bristol Technical Education Center will hold an Open House on Thursday, March 1 from 5:00 -7:00pm. Students can tour the campus, learn about career & technical programs, and work-based learning opportunities. For more information, visit bristol.cttech.org.
 
Attention Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors-- Please note that course selection for the 2018-2019 school year will end this Friday, March 2.  Each student in grades 9-11 is requested to sign up for their courses for next year online through their Power School account. Students are to follow the level recommendations made by their current teachers when selecting courses for next year.  Please contact your school counselor if you have any questions/concerns about the course selection process. The student portal will close this Friday at the end of the school day.  

Here are two announcements for fashion students: For those going on the MFIT field trip, the permission slip is due back by tomorrow. After this date, refunds will not be given if you can't attend the trip. For students in Fashion Club, we will be meeting tomorrow after school in Room 7 until 3:00pm. 
 
Anyone interested in Tech Crew or painting for the Spring Play - come to the Project Room in the Media Center on Friday from 2:00pm – 3:00pm. We need you creative and skilled people.

Interact Club is sponsoring a basketball tournament on March 29 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Entry is $10 per player and all proceeds go to hurricane relief for Puerto Rico. Pick up your form outside Room 134. Forms and money are due March 5. See Mrs. Howard in Room 134 or find an Interact Officer with questions.

The Mock Trial Team meets today after school Wednesday at 2:15pm in Room 157 to review the competition scores and celebrate the season. Please see Mr. Zeuschner if you cannot attend.

The CT State Board of Education has opened their search for two new 2018-19 Student Board Members.  Students, appointed by the governor, will serve from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.  Any junior interested in applying should look for additional information and the posting in the Career Center. Completed applications must be postmarked on or before April 13.

Athletic News:
-ANYONE interested in trying out for SWHS boys’ varsity golf team this spring should attend the mandatory meeting tomorrow after school from 2:10pm - 2:30pm. Please see Mr. Gray in Room 168 for any additional information or if you can't attend. 

-All winter athletes whose seasons have ended should remove personal belongings from their team rooms by the end of this week. All athletic uniforms should be washed and returned to your coaches.  (2/26, 2/28, f 3/1)

Another fast fact presented by the Environmental Club: Did you know that the Long Island Sound helps to generate approximately $9.4 billion a year? The sound is used by ferries and ships to transport people and goods and provides commercial fishermen a place to catch oysters, crabs, lobsters, bluefish, bass, and flounder. It is also home to many nature centers and aquariums and is used for recreational activities, such as boating and bird watching. Come to the Environmental Club meeting to learn how to improve this important natural resource.

The Italian Club will meet after school TODAY in Room 226. We'll be taking a picture for the yearbook first, so please stop by even if you're not staying for the meeting.

Mind's Eye will hold a meeting today at 2:00pm in Room 146. New members are welcome to attend.

Open Auditions for the award winning South Windsor Show Choir Choral Spectrum will be held Monday, March 5 at 5:00pm in the High School Auditorium. Materials are on the school website under the Music Department or on Google Classroom; use code ea311i. Don't miss your opportunity to be a part of this amazing experience.

Are you interested in the theater business? Sign up for a one of a kind opportunity where you will explore non-stage careers at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Stop by the Career Center of the Business Office to get your slip. Deadline is March 2. For more details see Ms. Festi or Ms. Cruz.

Attention students 17 and older, please sign up to donate blood on Wednesday, March 7. Over 30 million blood transfusions are needed in the US each year, and your donation can help to save 3 lives! Sign-ups will be done electronically; the link to the Google form will be available on the junior and senior Google classroom and on the high school home page. If you have questions please see Mrs. Belval in Room 204.

The RACE Committee is using the month of March to celebrate our religious diversity. Please take a few moments in your homeroom to fill out a two question survey that has been shared via a Google Form. This is voluntary; however, your participation would be greatly appreciated.  

The fashion field trip forms to the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology must be turned in by Thursday. See Mrs. Ziff in Room 7 during homeroom for forms and to drop off signed ones. Attention sophomores and juniors….the Capital Region Education Council (CREC) is looking for students interested in their CRILA leadership academy. This prestigious academy meets monthly throughout the 2018-19 school year and its purpose is to train students towards becoming more effective leaders through various trainings and exercises. In addition, there is a 7 day camping trip in Maine this June for those accepted. If interested in applying or getting more details, please visit Mr. Wry in School Counseling.

February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: Hank Aaron. Hank Aaron was a major league baseball player who hit 755 home runs during his career, making him America’s all-time home run leader for three decades, and earning him the nickname “Hammerin’ Hank.” He surpassed Babe Ruth, who had 714 home runs, and played in a record 24 All-Star games. He was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

The next meeting of Fashion Club will be on Thursday, March 1 after school in Room 7 until 3:00pm. We will work on new projects and planning upcoming events.

Reminder for all Unity Club Members… we will have our cultural food meeting on Monday after school in the Career Center. Please bring any food items you would like to share with the club for this meeting. Hope to see you all there.

A local medical office is looking for a high school student from the Class of 2019 to work 6-10 hours during the school week with increasing hours for the summer. Candidates should be motivated workers with attention to detail and are expected to be able to work in a professional setting. For more information on how to apply, please see the job posting on the Career Center bulletin board.

Do you like basketball? Or winning prizes? How about having fun? Interact Club is sponsoring a basketball tournament on March 29 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Entry is $10 per player and all proceeds go to hurricane relief for Puerto Rico. Pick up your form outside Room 134. Forms and money are due March 5. Questions? February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: Billie Holiday. Billie Holiday was one of the first and greatest of American jazz singers. She was a sensation at New York’s famous jazz club, The Apollo, and was nicknamed “Lady Day” by saxophonist Lester Young, with whom she often recorded. Billie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 for her legendary career.

Phillis Wheatley. Phillis Wheatley was a slave in Boston when she became the first published black poet in America in 1767.  She was purchased in 1761 by John and Susannah Wheatley, who saw that she learned English literature, Latin, and Greek, and was considered a prodigy among the people of Boston, thanks to her sophisticated verse and lively personality.

If you are considering a career in a STEM related field and would like to learn more about past accomplishments of women, then you should consider joining the new club, Women in Technology. The first meeting will be after school today in Room 9.

The Japanese Club will meet tomorrow in Room 230.

The Italian Club will have its next meeting Tuesday, February 27 in Room 226. We will be having pizza and doing some other activities. If you would like to participate, please bring $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli by Friday, February 23. There is limited space and spots will be filled on a first come first served basis.

Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman to be elected to the US Congress. She served seven terms as a representative from New York’s 12th district, and also ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 1972, becoming the first African-American woman to run for office.

February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: 
Matthew Henson. Matthew Henson was the first human to reach the North Pole. An expert with sleds and dogs and fluent in the Inuit language, he was hired by Robert E. Peary as an assistant in his quest to reach the North Pole. Although Peary was celebrated for the achievement, Henson’s role was largely unrecognized for years. 

Another fast fact presented by the Environmental Club; Did you know that the Long Island Sound has an area of more than 1,300 square miles and contains more than 18 trillion gallons of water? It is an estuary, meaning that it is a mix of saltwater from the oceans and freshwater from rivers. This large estuary is home to over 1,200 invertebrates, 170 species of fish, and dozens of migratory birds.

Today is the last day to sign up for the FBLA competitions - we are signing up by period 5 today. Please e-mail and let Mrs. Barrett know if you are interested in competing by then.

February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth was an anti-slavery and women’s rights activist who was born into slavery and then sold several times before escaping to freedom with her daughter. Although she could not read or write, she was a captivating speaker, and gave her now famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman,” to challenge the idea that men were superior to women.

Another fast fact presented by the Environmental Club: Did you know that from 1820 to 1955, the concentration of mercury in sections of Long Island Sound increased by more than 1,300 percent? Heavy metals like mercury are consumed by fish, which are then consumed by humans. Mercury can have many effects on children and teenagers like permanently decreasing the brain's ability to respond to sound and impact the body's ability to regulate heartbeat. Learn how the concentrations of Mercury are being reduced at the Environmental Club meeting every Thursday in Room 206.

Take advantage of Dollars for Scholars, use Naviance to search for more opportunities, and check out the Scholarship and Aid bulletin board in the Career Center for notices. Every dollar counts.

Hey Foodies! Our next Cooking Club session is Wednesday, February 28 and our menu will highlight our love for all things chocolate. Help us choose recipes at our planning meeting on Valentine's Day--Wednesday, February 14. See you and your sweet-tooth there!

Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: Barbara Harris.  Barbara Harris was the first woman to serve as a bishop in an Anglican church anywhere in the world. She was a corporate public relations executive before studying for the ministry, and was outspoken on issues of race and gender in church.


Reminder…the Teen Center is closed today.

Gay-Straight Alliance meets today after school in Room 148.  
French Exchange student-hosts are required to meet today at 2:05pm in Room 228.   
The RACE committee meets today after school in the Media Center project space. 
Yoga club will meets today at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room.

Attention all students who were signed up to take the American Mathematics Contest: There are currently plans to make up the AMC 10 and 12 during school hours later this month; the date of the makeup will be forthcoming. However, the results of this makeup date will be unofficial, and will not allow students to qualify for awards or for the American Invitational Math Exam. For students that want a chance to get an official score in order to qualify, an alternate version of the contest will be offered during our winter break on Thursday, February 15 at 8:00am at SWHS. If you were originally signed up for the AMC and would like to take this alternate version, you must see Mr. Brindisi in Room 265 or email him by no later than TOMORROW in order to secure a spot and get important information.
