Today for Black History Month, we recognize Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. General Davis commanded the first all-Black unit of military pilots, called the Tuskegee Airmen. When the U.S. entered World War 2, the Tuskegee Army Air Field began training African Americans as military pilots and Davis was part of the first graduating class. He was immediately given a command of a unit of all-Black pilots and later commanded an even larger group. During WW2, his men bravely flew into enemy territory in Germany and Italy.

Student Council and BPO are hosting a monthly Kahoot Trivia League! The second Kahoot Trivia game will be on Thursday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. All students are welcome to play. There is no entry fee. The South Windsor Teen Center will host a Virtual Paint Night on Tuesday, March 16th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Lindsey’s Craft Studio will be leading participants through the creation of a dot mandala painting. This event costs $5 but will go towards a painting kit filled with the supplies needed to create your masterpiece. Do you want to play a spring sport? If so, registration for spring athletics is open until March 15th. Please register in Powerschool and submit your Physician’s Statement. See the Athletics registration webpage for more details. Tryouts will begin March 27th.

The Bobcats Ladies Golf Team will have a meeting for those interested in playing this spring on Monday, March 8th at 2:30 p.m. There is no experience required and they are willing to help you learn the game! Today for Black History Month, we highlight Olympic Athlete Jesse Owens. Owens was an Olympic world record breaking runner. While competing for Ohio State University he broke tied one record and broke 3 others. He then went on to win four gold medals at the Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936. All students interested in engineering fields are invited to attend. The events will offer the opportunity to speak to students and faculty and will offer a new engineering-related theme each day. First Approach EMS Education is offering a spring 2021 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program at its training center in East Windsor. The evening class is available from March 9th to May 20th with in-person skills training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. Additional information may be found at https://firstapproach.org/

Today for Black History Month, we recognize Marley Dias. Marley Dias, is a young changemaker who as a sixth-grader founded #1000BlackGirlBooks. Her campaign, #1000BlackGirlBooks, had a goal of collecting and donating children's books that feature Black girls as the lead characters. Dias said, “Each of us has a magic inside of us that we can use to make the world a better place.”

High school students are asked to write an essay on “What it means to me to be an American” in 500 words or less. All entries must be received by Monday, March 1. Winners will receive a gift card - first place $100.00, second place $50 and third place $25. Please see your Social Studies teacher or Mrs. Slogesky for the contest flyer and application.

Five SWHS students have received recognition from the 2021 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing for their computing-related goals and for their demonstrated outstanding aptitude and interest in STEM, especially computer science and information technology. Congratulations to Aditi Malpure and Tanishka Dalavi for being recognized as Connecticut Honorable Mentions, Abbie Mathew and Mayee Mavillapalli for being recognized as Connecticut Rising Stars, and Sivani Arvapalli for being the 2021 Connecticut Winner.

Seniors: The timeline to apply for Dollars Scholars is at the halfway point and the application portal will close in just one month! If you have not started your application, now is the time to do so as there are several steps to completing the process. If you have started your application, this is a great time to finish up any essays you need to write and get your final application submitted. Contact School Counseling or Mrs. Carty if you need assistance.

Today for Black History Month, we highlight an important artist from CT, Marian Anderson. Marian Anderson, from Danbury, Connecticut became one of the most famous opera singers of the 20th century. She was the first African American to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, and her Easter Sunday concert in 1939, before 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial, was hailed as a defining moment in the history of civil rights in the United States.

Please join South Windsor For The Kids TONIGHT, Wednesday, February 10th at a local pizza restaurant on Oakland Road! This will be one of our biggest fundraisers this year and we will be receiving 50% of all dine in and takeout orders between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.! We hope to see you there!

This scholarship program is an excellent opportunity for SWHS students to receive awards from local organizations and funds. Speak to your school counselor or Mrs. Carty in the Career Center if you have any questions or need assistance during your application process.
