February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: Sheryl Swoopes. Sheryl Swoopes was one of the first women drafted to play professional basketball for the WNBA. She helped lead the Comets to four consecutive championships, and was voted as the league’s MVP in 2000, 2002, and 2005.
Have you heard announcements for the Gay-Straight Alliance at SWHS and wondered what it's all about? Have you thought about attending a meeting but felt too shy? Hesitate no longer. Come on down to Room 148 on Monday, February 12 after school for our winter mixer. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know us and introduce yourself. There will be food, games, and good times. We welcome all who are advocates for making South Windsor (and our world) a safe and equitable place for everyone. Did we mention food and games?

Reminder to seniors…the written portion of the Capstone project is due TODAY.
Attention all students who were signed up to take the American Mathematics Contest: There are currently plans to make up the AMC 10 and 12 during school hours later this month; the date of the makeup will be forthcoming. However, the results of this makeup date will be unofficial, and will not allow students to qualify for awards or for the American Invitational Math Exam. For students that want a chance to get an official score in order to qualify, an alternate version of the contest will be offered during our winter break on Thursday, February 15 at 8:00am at SWHS. If you were originally signed up for the AMC and would like to take this alternate version, you must see Mr. Brindisi in Room 265 or email him by no later than Tuesday (Feb. 13) in order to secure a spot and get important information.
Yoga club will meet Monday at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room to practice yoga. All experience levels are welcome, and you don't need to be a member of the club to attend.
Seniors who have not started their Dollars for Scholars application or who need help with the process are welcome to stop into the Career Center for assistance with the portal. There are still a few weeks to get your applications complete. Other scholarship opportunities are added or updated in Naviance daily. Please note that some scholarships with spring deadlines may not have this year’s application available yet. All scholarships are updated as they come in. Please see Mrs. Carty with any questions.
Hey Foodies! Our next Cooking Club session is Wednesday, February 28 and our menu will highlight our love for all things chocolate. Help us choose recipes at our planning meeting on Valentine's Day--Wednesday, February 14. See you and your sweet-tooth there!
The Italian Club will have its next meeting Tuesday, February 27 in Room 226. We will be having pizza and doing some other activities. If you would like to participate, please bring $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli by Friday, February 23. There is limited space and spots will be filled on a first come first served basis.
There will be a RACE committee meeting on Monday, February 12 in the Media Center project space. All are welcome!

-Last Night at the Floyd Little Center, South Windsor High School's own Patrick Bell won the Class L State Championship in the Pole Vault. Patrick cleared thirteen feet, setting a school record while earning a spot in the State Open on February 17th. Congratulations Patrick and good luck at the Open!!

Bob Marley was a reggae legend who gained international fame for songs that spoke of politics, religion, and life on the streets, including his anthem “Get Up, Stand Up.” His greatest hits compilation titled Legend was released in 1984 and sold millions of copies, after his tragic death three years before.

Attention all students. Come out and support the basketball team next Tuesday, February 13. Student Council is running a Canned Food Drive. Students bringing in two canned goods will be admitted to the game for free; adults with four canned goods will be admitted for free. Hope to see you there.
The Hartford Hospital Volunteer Program will hold its parent and student information session on Tuesday, February 13 from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. Students who attend receive early access to the application. See the flier in the Career Center for more information.
Applications for the UConn Explore Engineering Program are now available. The five day residential program allows students to explore a variety of engineering fields. You must be a current grade 10 or grade 11 student. More information is available in the Career Center.

Natasha Trethewey. Natasha Trethewey won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for her poetry collection Native Guard, which was about black Union soldiers who guarded a fort during the Civil War. Natasha has been winning prizes for her poems on culture since she published her first collection, Domestic Work, and now works as a creative writing professor.
Attention all students taking the AMC 10 or 12 tomorrow: Please report directly to the cafeteria between 7:15am and 7:20am tomorrow with a pencil(s); you may also bring a ruler, protractor, and eraser, if you wish. Scratch paper and graph paper will be provided. No calculators or electronic devices of any kind may be used! You will miss periods 1 and 3. If there is a school cancellation tomorrow, the AMC will be rescheduled for a date later in February. See Mr. Brindisi in Room 265 with any questions.
Reminder to the students attending the field trip to the Wolfpack School Day Game tomorrow… You must bring a bagged lunch or money (cash, debit or credit card) for the trip. The $5 from the field trip cost will be refunded to you at a later date. Also note, we will meet in the main lobby at 7:55am tomorrow morning before boarding the bus at the back of the school.

The CT Trolley Museum in East Windsor is looking for volunteers, whether on a regular basis, just for events, or to fulfill service hour requirements. To learn more about opportunities with the museum, view an information flyer in the Career Center or call the Trolley Museum at 860-627-6540.

Applications for the Alpha Delta Kappa – Pi Chapter Scholarship are now available in the Career Center. This is a $1,000 scholarship for female students planning to pursue a career in teaching. The application deadline is April 30. Several scholarships have deadlines next week – please check Naviance for a complete list. The Dollars for Scholars portal will remain open for a few more weeks. Seniors hoping to take advantage of these local funds should already be working on their applications.

February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors:
Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall led the Brown v Board of Education case to the Supreme Court, who ruled that separate schools for blacks and whites was indeed unequal. Later, Thurgood Marshall became a Supreme Court justice, the first African American to do so. He also worked as a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for over two decades.
The Science Olympiad team traveled to Brown University for an Invitational this Saturday and blew the competition away. The A team won first place by an outstanding 46 points. The team racked up 5 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 5 bronze medals. The B team won an impressive 5th place overall. Outstanding performances were from Thomas Strelecky, Bhavana Gunda, Eugenia Yi and Neal Shah who each placed in all 3 their events. Next up for the team is the State competition in April.
Attention students attending the field trip to the Wolfpack School Day Game event at the XL Center on Wednesday, February 7. You must either bring additional cash or a debit/credit card to purchase food at the event or plan to bring a bagged lunch - $5 from the field trip cost will be refunded to you at a later date, however, you must plan to bring either additional money to pay for lunch or a bagged lunch to school on Wednesday. We will meet in the main lobby at 7:55am on Wednesday morning before boarding the bus at the back of the school.
Have you ever wanted to learn about black culture? A group of students will be creating the very first Step and Drill Team. They will be doing dances using their hands and feet to create beats and rhythm as well as dancing to songs by artists such as Cardi b, Migos, and 21 Savage. The first meeting will be today in the Rubber Room. Sign up forms can be picked up in the Main Office or in the cafeteria. Stay tuned for more information.

February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors Condoleeza Rice: Condoleezza Rice was the first African American woman to be US Secretary of State. She was Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009, and prior to this, she served four years as National Security Advisor. As a child, Condoleezza was a prodigy on the piano, and wanted to study it in college before studying politics.

February is Black History Month. Each morning in February, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society will profile an important figure in American History.
BENJAMIN BANNEKER
Benjamin Banneker was a free-born descendant of slaves who became a famous 18th-century astronomer, mathematician and surveyor. He is considered by many to be the first African-American scientist. Benjamin Banneker was raised on a tobacco farm in rural Maryland, where he attended school but was largely self-taught in the sciences. Although Banneker worked most of his life as a farmer, his analytical and problem-solving skills became legendary. His achievements were indeed impressive: at age 24 he studied clockworks and constructed his own clock from wood; he taught himself astronomy and published a popular almanac, Benjamin Banneker’s Almanac, from 1792 to 1797; he was appointed to assist in surveying the Federal Territory, the plot of land that was to become Washington, D.C.; he worked on calculating the precise measurement of the meter; and he corresponded with Thomas Jefferson on the issue of slavery and the intellectual equality of blacks.

Do you need help with your thesis? How about a lab report? Come to the Writing Center and get help from a student tutor. There a tutors ready and waiting to help you in the Media Center Periods 1, 2, 5, and 8. We also offer after school help on late bus days (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday) in Room 136. New England Institute of Technology will hold a Tech Nite on Tuesday, February 6 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Interested students can tour the labs, classrooms and residence hall, talk to faculty, hear about career success for New England Tech grads, and fill out the FAFSA with assistance. “South Windsor For the Kids” will meet today after school in the cafe from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. This is a mandatory meeting, so please make your best effort to be there.
Mr. SWHS auditions will be held today and tomorrow immediately after school in Room 252 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. You will love this opportunity to do comedic acts and compete with your friends… signup sheets will be outside Room 252 and in the halls.

The girls’ basketball team will be hosting their annual Coaches vs Cancer game this Friday at home. Please support this great cause by purchasing a Heroes of Hope card for $1 from any of the players or come to the game and purchase something from the bake sale. All proceeds will be going to the American Cancer Society.
Last Saturday, Patrick Bell became CCC Champion in the Pole Vault. Patrick tied the school indoor record at 12'6". He will continue his season by competing in the class L meet on February 8. Good Luck Patrick.
