Bobcats Robotics Team 177 competed in their first event of the season at the Waterbury District Event this past weekend. A strong scouting team, hard-working pit crew, talented drive team, and a large student and family contingent from the stands all helped pull the team to victory. As Waterbury District Event Winners, the team was proud to bring home a coveted “blue banner” to add to the team’s growing collection. Sidarth Masarur and Sivani Arvapalli represented the team as semi-finalists for the Dean’s List Award from Team 177. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Dean’s List Award celebrates outstanding student leaders whose passion for and effectiveness at attaining FIRST ideals is exemplary. Sivani was selected as one of two finalists from the Waterbury event to move on to compete at the New England District Championships in April. Congratulations Sivani, Sidharth and the entire team for an outstanding start to the season.

For all students trying to complete their Dollars for Scholars applications before the Sunday night deadline, the local representative for the scholarship program will be available in the Career Center starting at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning. If you are having any issues with your application, want to verify its status, or have any questions, you may stop in at any time – no appointment needed to see her. Take advantage of this great opportunity to make sure your application is included in our biggest scholarship opportunity of the year.

We will begin accepting parking pass applications from all Juniors and Seniors on Friday, March 13th. The passes will cost $35 and will be valid for the remainder of the 2019 - 2020 school year. No application can be accepted without all required documents. Passes will be assigned on a first come first served basis. No applications will be accepted prior to Friday.

Attention 9th, 10th and 11th graders: If you are interested in learning more about the Early Dismissal proposal for the high school for next year, please consider stopping by the Seminar Room on Monday, March 16th to meet directly with Mr. Rizzuto. This option is available for all students with a study hall in their schedule. Please check in with your study hall teacher first for attendance, have your planner signed, and then proceed to the Seminar Room to learn more about the proposal.

This is the final week to buy Junior Prom tickets! Tables are going fast so don't miss your chance. More information is on the Class of 2021 Google Classroom and on the school website.

It is already March... are you wondering where the school year has gone? Are you looking for an activity to get involved in to round out your experiences? Do you want to help others? Then pick up an application in the Counseling Office for the Jump Start Tutoring program today! The 3rd and final session starts March 26th and runs thru April 30th. Each Thursday you will help a middle school student study for tests and finish their homework. Pick up your applications today and return by Monday, March 23rd!

Interact Club is holding a toiletry drive for the needy population in Hartford county. We are currently collecting travel/hotel-sized shampoos, conditioners, toothbrushes and other items. Please look at our flyers around school to see what you could donate. Donation boxes will be in the lobby, outside the cafeteria, in Mrs. Howard's room (134) and in the math hallway. We will be collecting for the next 2 weeks. See Mrs. Howard with any questions.

The Aurora Foundation for Women and Girls in Greater Hartford seeks nominations for its Young Philanthropist of the Year Award, given annually to a young woman who is a current freshman, sophomore or junior and doing great things in her community. Students may ask an adult to nominate themselves or may self-nominate. Nomination forms are available in the Career Center and must be filled out and returned to the Aurora Foundation by April 30th.

For all students trying to complete their Dollars for Scholars applications before the Sunday night deadline, the local representative for the scholarship program will be available in the Career Center starting at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning. FCCLA members competed on March 6th at a state conference. Delanie Halstead took Gold in Entrepreneurship, Samantha Belekewicz took Gold in the Job Interview, Daniel Hegi took Silver in the Job Interview, Aditi Malpure took Bronze in Cake Decorating, and Shani Kibara and Alex Smyrak took Bronze in Baking and Pastry. An honorable mention goes out to Kashvi Bokria for her gorgeous cake decor as well.

The recruiter from the Connecticut Army National Guard will be in the Career Center TODAY at noon. She will offer a brief presentation and be available to speak to students who have questions about enlisting. If you are interested in attending, please check in with your 6th period teacher before coming to the Career Center.

Thank you to all of the students who volunteered and donated at the Blood Drive yesterday, March 11th!! We collected 46 productive pints of blood, which can save up to 138 lives!! Students who missed this blood drive or were unable to donate should look for other blood drives in the community to participate in!

A reminder to students that a representative from Binghamton University will be in the Career Center at 11:45 a.m. this morning. Please consider attending if you would like to learn more.

Congratulations to the SWHS Varsity Cheerleading team for their 5th place finish at the State Cheerleading Championships this past weekend. This is the highest score and placement at states in the history of the program. Congratulations to seniors Missy Sullivan and Carlyn Burba for being selected for the Class L All-State Team.

There will be a Boys’ Varsity Tennis Preseason Meeting on Wednesday, March 11th at 2:10 p.m. in room 111.

There will be a Boys’ Volleyball Informational Meeting on Wednesday, March 11th at 2:10 p.m. in the SWHS Café for any boys interested in trying out for the team.

The Italian Club will meet TODAY, Monday, March 9th after school in room 105. We'll be making pizza, appetizers, salad, and dessert.

The Connecticut Office of Higher Education will host CareerConn 2020 on Wednesday, March 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford. Explore Careers in Nursing, Healthcare, Automotive, Culinary Arts, Computers, Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Manufacturing, Construction and more. For more information, visit CareerConn.org.

It Takes One is a program that raises awareness about making safe decisions around choices related to alcohol, drugs, and drinking and driving. We invite Juniors, Seniors and parents to join us for a powerful evening which includes a keynote speaker and breakout sessions. This program will run on April 2nd from 6:00 - 9:15 p.m. in the South Windsor High School Auditorium. The cost for this program is $10 for all participants and includes a t-shirt and dinner. The RSVP link is on our webpage. Please complete one RSVP for each person who plans on attending. Permission slips and payment can be handed in to Mrs. Howard in room 134 or Ms. Flachsbart in room 129. The deadline to register is March 18th.

Athletic News:

This weekend at the Gymnastics State Open, South Windsor High School’s Erin Dunn placed 2nd in the balance beam and 5th in the floor routine, while teammate Audrey Manning placed 7th in the floor routine. This qualifies both gymnasts for the New England Championship this upcoming weekend.

There will be a Boys’ Varsity Tennis Preseason Meeting on Wednesday, March 11th at 2:10 p.m. in room 111.

Seniors – take note that the deadline for Dollars for Scholars is quickly approaching.  You have 9 more days (and just ONE more school week) to finish your applications. There are scholarships for every kind of student whether you are headed to a 4 year, 2 year or trade school program. Application numbers have so far been low, so do NOT miss your chance to earn some of the thousands of dollars available. If you need help with your application, come to School Counseling or see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center.

You don't have to be taking American Sign Language to buy a shirt. Children's sizes are also available for your siblings, relatives or friends who are interested in American Sign Language. T-shirts are $10, they will have SWHS/South Windsor CT printed on the sleeve. Miss Eddy can share with you the link so that you can see the design.

TODAY is the Interact whole club meeting for the month of March. Please come join us at 2:05 p.m. in the Seminar Room to hear about new events and sign up. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Howard in room 134.

In its last league meet of the year, South Windsor's math team placed second to Avon by seven points, finishing the season 2nd place overall in the 26-team Capitol Area Math League. Scoring a perfect 18 points for the Bobcats were Aryan Kalia, Michael Ngo, Yunfei Zheng, and Pranav Ramesh. Jaideep Naik and Keshav Ramesh also had great meets with 17 and 15 points. Next up for the team is the state meet on April 1st, where they will challenge for the Medium School championship.

Students are doing such a wonderful job learning to read and speak Japanese. And also enjoying the anime movies, too! The Japanese Club is meeting this Thursday, March 5th in room 230.

March is Women’s History Month.  Please stop by the pendulum area showcase to see how women have helped shape history. As Maya Angelou said “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!”

The results of the American Mathematics Contest are in, and here are our top scorers:  On the AMC10, 3rd place is Yunfei Zheng with 106.5 points, 2nd place is Jaideep Naik with 111 points, and 1st place goes to Aryan Kalia with 112.5 points. On the AMC12, 3rd place is Keshav Ramesh with 78 points, 2nd place is Noah Leibowitz with 82.5 points, and 1st place is Michael Ngo with 97.5 points. In addition, Michael, Aryan, Jaideep, and Yunfei qualified to take the very prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Congratulations to all who competed! Students who took the AMC10 or AMC12 can see their mathematics teacher for their score.

Reminder: Junior Prom tickets will be available for sale starting TODAY after school from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in room 159. Only one person per group needs to come. Please be sure to bring the following with you:
1. Checks made out to the Class of 2021 for $80 (or $160 per couple). The individual who is representing the group needs to have all checks from everyone in the group.
2. Outside guest forms appropriately completed and identification of guests (as requested on the form).
3. Meal choices--must be appropriately filled out for all members of the group. As stated above, the individual who is representing the group needs to come with 1 meal choice form, and this form needs to be completed for all members at the table.
It is okay if you do not have ten people at your table, but do keep in mind, that we may need to add others to your table. Please see Mrs. Caless or Mrs. Lang if you have any questions.
