Reminder from the Café: Any students with a negative balance from meal charges will no longer be able to purchase a la carte items in the cafeteria until the money owed is paid back. Please ask one of the cashiers in the cafeteria for help if needed.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a pilot or exploring any career in aviation, you can check out the Young Eagles Rally on June 9 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at Meriden-Markham Airport. Anyone between the ages of 8 and 17 can take a free flight and see what pilots do before, during and after a flight. For an informational flyer about how to participate, see Mrs. Carty or the bulletin board in the Career Center.

The Freshman Class of 2021 will be having a fundraiser at the brand new pizza restaurant in Evergreen Walk from 5-10 on Tuesday, May 1st. We receive 3.50 for each large flatbread and 1.75 for each small flatbread sold. Please come help the Freshman Class of 2021. See you there. 

On Friday an important School Messenger was sent home to students and families. Next fall, juniors and seniors in good academic and behavioral standing may request to have first period “lock-in” study hall and arrive to school 10 minutes prior to second period. We will also continue to offer early release, aka “lock-out” as an option for juniors and seniors in good academic and behavioral standing. It is important to note that students may not have both “lock-in” and “lock-out.” If you would like to request a first period study hall in your schedule for next year, you must email Mrs. Harlow by tomorrow at 8:00am. 

Attention Mind's Eye members: Mind's Eye will hold a meeting Thursday, May 3 after school in Room 146. Please contact Ms. Pieratti if you cannot attend.

Class Officer AND Student Council Elections are on Thursday, May 24. All those interested in running for Class Office or Student Council may pick up an application in the main office or Admin 237. All applications are due by Thursday, May 17. 

South Windsor Rotary Club Scholarship applications are now available. You can pick one up from the Career Center or download it from the Scholarship section of Naviance. This year’s deadline is May 11.  

All students interested in going on the St. Francis Hospital visit need to return their permission slips to Dr. Bombara as soon as possible.

The Unity Club will be meeting after school today in the School Counseling Career Center.

Junior World Literature students should report directly to the auditorium after 6th period on Tuesday, May 1, for the production of Hamlet. If you have any concerns or issues with attendance please communicate with your English teacher as soon as possible.

Athletics: Attention all members of the Boys JV volleyball team. Please be in uniform and meet in the gym to setup for our home match today by 2:30 pm. Any questions, see Coach Holt.

The High School Cafeteria will have the El Monterey Tornado Food Truck visiting today during regular lunch waves for students and staff to try some new sample items for future lunch options. Please visit the Tornado Truck outside the rear cafeteria doors, try the items, and give them your feedback. 

The winner of the Prom Promise raffle is Kriti Gupta…..Congratulations.

If you are interested in becoming an engineer or learning more about what it takes to become one, UConn School of Engineering offers 2 summer programs. Explore Engineering is open to sophomores and juniors and the SPARK Program is open to female students who are currently in grade 6 – 11. For more information on these programs, visit the Enrichment Programs section of Naviance. Flyers are also hanging in the Career Center, where you can find information about many summer pre-college and career exploration programs.

If you are a college-bound senior with demonstrated financial need, consider applying for the Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship which offers very generous and renewable funding to students with a 3.0 GPA and a high level of financial need. The application deadline is May 1.  Also with a May 1 deadline is the CEF Ethnic Minority Scholarship Fund. This program funds a $2,000 scholarship for students from an ethnic minority group who are pursuing a career in education.  Candidates should also have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate involvement in community activities. See Naviance or Mrs. Carty for more information.  

Students attending the Common Ground Leadership workshop on Monday are reminded to report directly to the Seminar Room at 8:25am. If you have any questions contact Ms. Lane.

Yoga Club will meet Monday at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room to practice yoga. All are welcome to come practice yoga with us.

The Drama Department will put on, Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker this weekend. Come on out tonight or tomorrow night… show starts at 7:00pm. Tickets will be sold at lunch and are available at the door. 

Attention Seniors: The annual Senior Art Show will be happening at the South Windsor Public Library in May. If you have taken any art courses during your years at South Windsor High School, this is a fantastic opportunity for you to display your artwork in this juried show. If you are interested in earning an honor cord in art, you will need to participate in the judged section of this Senior Art Show. Applications are due May 4; see your art teacher for details and an application.

If you are a senior attending the senior outing to Holiday Hill and need to take the early bus, you must print and return the Early Bus Form to Miss Griswold in Room 227 no later than May 16. The early bus will leave at 2:30pm from the outing. The Early Bus Form can be found on the Class of 2018 website and Google Classroom page.

The Relay for Life club will hold a brief but mandatory meeting after school on Wednesday, May 2 in room 143. We will be discussing event details and leadership opportunities for next year. Please see Mrs. Frasier with any questions.

There is a limited supply of School Guide magazines available in the Career Center.  School Guide is an annual publication that offers tips and planning suggestions for the college admissions process and also provides an extensive state by state list of colleges and military programs.  Juniors who are starting their college search process may find it helpful.  

It may barely feel like spring out, but it’s not too soon to think about summer plans.  If you are looking for unique summer experiences to explore career options or preview college life, check out the Enrichment Programs section in the College Research area of your Naviance account.  Thousands of programs can be researched.  A smaller selection of brochures and materials are also available to check out or copy in the Career Center.

Athletic News:

-In the first match in South Windsor history, the Girls’ Golf team lost a close match to Manchester yesterday by 6 shots. Meghna Mazumdar was the medalist with a score of 42. Caroline McCullough and Amala Mammayil also scored well for the Bobcats. 

-The Girls’ Tennis team won 5/2 against RHAM yesterday. 1st singles Caitlin Sze faced a tough match but came out strong, and singles Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan also won great matches. Doubles also faced heavy competition but 1st doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon were able to win their match. It was a great performance by the team overall. Their next match is tonight at Simsbury, wish them luck.

-After a tough close loss to Glastonbury, Boys Tennis came back strong and determined with a sweep against RHAM, 7-0. Winning for the Bobcats were Brandon Sze, Femi Orisamolu, Elijah Wood, and Jack Perry - all straight set singles victories and Ronnak Saxena & Parker Pacekonis, Andris Reba & Wayne Huang and Donny Sauer and Jonathan Huot - all straight set victories in doubles. The next match is today…home against Hall… come out and show your support.

-The Boys’ Volleyball team traveled to play another tough opponent in East Hartford last night. JV lost 2-1 and Varsity lost 3-0. The team will be back at home for all 3 matches next week, starting on Monday vs. Wethersfield. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you in the bleachers cheering.

Mind's Eye Club will meet after school this Friday, April 27 at 2:00 pm in Room 146.

The University of Harford Summer Business Institute offers high school students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits while experiencing life as a college student.  The selective program runs from July 8 to July 20.  Applications are being accepted now, but admission is on a rolling basis until all spots are full. To learn more, see the flyer in the Career Center or visit hartford.edu/sbi. 

Attention students needing to complete community service hours... Our Community Resource Coordinator, Mrs. Cindi Yakoubian, is looking for volunteers to help with parking, greeting guests, and helping with direction to the historical displays and activities taking place at the Ellsworth School open house this Saturday, April 28 beginning at 9:30am. Athletic News:
-The boys’ volleyball team ran into a tough Class M opponent last night in Farmington. The JV lost 2-0 and Varsity lost a close one 2-3. The team will travel again tonight to face East Hartford. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you there supporting your fellow Bobcats.

-On Tuesday, the girls’ track and field team faced Manchester. First place finishes were had by Isabelle Erikson in the 3200, Shannon Anthony in 300 hurdles and high jump, Kavitha Francis in long jump, and Bella Sanchez in triple jump. Strong performances were also had by Katelyn Maycomber and Muneeka Munir. The girls' next meet will be today at E.O. Smith.

The RACE committee wants to share a video for Autism Awareness month. (video to follow)

The Drama Department will present the Spring Play, Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker this weekend. Come see fellow students perform a show about finding just the right partner. Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at lunch and are available at the door. 

The annual South Windsor Schools Art Show continues to be open for viewing at the Public Library through May 9th. Please come and support the High School artists and see what kinds of projects you could make if you take an art class. There are displays from Painting, Drawing, Clay, Metalwork, Printmaking and Fashion classes and you will not be disappointed by this fabulous show.

The Boys Tennis Team lost a very competitive tight match to Glastonbury 3-4. Winners for South Windsor were Brandon Sze (#1 Singles), Femi Orisamolu (#4 Singles) and Jack Perry & Elijah Wood (#1 Doubles). Excellent effort by everyone that played. Our next match is Wednesday versus RHAM at home. Go Bobcats.

All 4 singles players Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, Sam Donovan had a clean sweep. 1st doubles players Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon held strong, winning a tough match. This brings their record to 4-0. Next match is against RHAM tomorrow.

The Boys Volleyball team had another clean sweep last night at Home vs. Bulkeley. The JV won 2-0 improving their record to 7-0 and Varsity won 3-0 putting their current record at 6-1. The team will travel the next two days to face Farmington tomorrow and East Hartford on Thursday. Best of luck to the team and we hope to see you there!

Boys Tennis had a dominant win yesterday defeating Middletown 7-0!! Straight set wins went to all players: Brandon Sze, Ronnak Saxena, Parker Pacekonis and Abhiram Gunti all playing singles and Donny Sauer & Sam Kim, Elijah Wood & Jack Perry and Jason Richenbacher & Dan Zhu all playing doubles. The team is on a roll with a 3-1 record and are looking to add 3 more wins this week against Glastonbury, RHAM and Hall. The team's first home match is Tuesday against Glastonbury - Come cheer the team on and show your support!

Student Council would like to thank all who attended the first annual Trivia Night. It was a fun successful night with over 80 students in attendance. A big congratulations to the winners and those who placed.

We've been making Jamaican beef patties, jerk chicken, a Moroccan lamb stew, Cuban guava cookies, a Botswanan safari-camp cake and so much more. Bring $5 to Ms. Cliff and Sra. Ruiz--we cook on Wednesday.   

The Mind's Eye Coffeehouse originally scheduled for April 26 has been postponed. Please stay tuned for an upcoming date in May--we'd love to see you there.

Singles winners were Ronnak Saxena in straight sets and Parker Pacekonis winning in a 3rd set 10 point tiebreak. Doubles winners were Sam Kim & Donny Sauer, Elijah Wood & Jack Perry, and Jason Rickenbacher & Wayne Huang all in straight set wins. Our first home match is tomorrow against Glastonbury - come out and cheer our team to victory. Go Bobcats.

Singles Sophia Chin and Samantha Donovan, as well as doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon all had double bagels, and it was an outstanding performance by the team overall. Come support the girls at their home match against Farmington after school today.

Attention all graduating seniors - you're cordially invited to submit a poem to the Grad Poem Contest running now. Write an original poem fitting for the 2018 Graduation Ceremony to either Ms. White or Ms. Pieratti - Room 144 or 146 - by May 15. Getting writing, South!

Seniors – take note of the next round of scholarship deadlines coming up. Due next week are the Hartford Area Roller Derby Scholarship for female athletes attending a CT college or university and the Kline Family Community Service Scholarship for students who plan to attend UConn and have been very involved in service. The Connecticut Congressional Delegation hosts the 2018 Military Service Academy Night on Wednesday, April 25 at 6:00pm at the MG Maurice Rose Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown. All interested high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are invited to come learn about our nation’s military academies. An informational flyer is hanging on the Programs & Events board in the Career Center. You can also visit the website of any member of the Connecticut Congressional Delegation to find information about this event.

Tonight is the grand opening of the district wide art show at the town library. It starts at 6:00pm and goes until 8:30pm. Come see the demonstrations on working with clay and metal and come be amazed by the quality work that has been made this year.

Athletic News:
-The girls’ lacrosse team played Ellington yesterday; Varsity won 17-5 and JV won 13-3. The girls will take on Cheshire this Saturday at 10:00am. 

-The boys’ tennis team was narrowly defeated by Farmington by a score of 4-3. #1 Singles Brandon Sze, #2 Singles Ronnak Saxena and the #3 Doubles Team of Jack Perry & Elijah Wood all won their matches in impressive straight sets. The #1 Doubles Team of Sam Kim and Donny Sauer was the last match on the court and had an extremely exciting match. After losing the first set 2-6, they battled back to win the second set 7-6 and barely lost the 10 point tiebreak by a score of 8-10. Excellent job of staying in the match until the last point. The team’s first home match is Tuesday, April 24 at 3:45pm versus Glastonbury. The team would love to see as many fans there as possible. Come out and support the team, and we promise you will see some great tennis.

-Both boys’ volleyball teams defeated Glastonbury last night with JV winning 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. The team will be back home next Monday, April 23 when they host Bulkeley of Hartford. Good luck to the team and we hope you'll come out and cheer that night for your fellow Bobcats.

Seniors who participated in the SW Little League… don’t forget to apply for the 2018 South Windsor Little League Baseball/Softball Scholarships available in the Career Center. Three $1000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from the Class of 2018 who participated in the SW Little league. Deadline for submission is FRIDAY.

FBLA is canceled this week. See you on May 3, for our end of the year party! 

Tomorrow night at the town library, the Art Department will have its annual art show from 6:00pm - 8:30pm. There will be demonstrations on clay work, potter's wheel, and metal working. Check out your friends' art work in the galleries and showcases.

Join the Bobcat Robotics Team fundraiser at a local Mexican Grill Restaurant on Sullivan Ave. tonight from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The team receives 20% of the proceeds. Please come out to support the team.

If you can no longer attend and signed up, please see a Student Council representative to get your team's refund. Cost is $10 per team and limited to 5 students per team… sign-ups will continue during lunch waves this week. Get ready for a fun nigh with over $300 worth of prizes!

Applications for the 2018 South Windsor Little League Baseball/Softball Scholarships are available in the Career Center. The Little League will award three $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors from the Class of 2018 who participated in the SW Little league. Deadline for submission is April 20, 2018.

Bobcat Robotics will be having fundraiser a local Mexican Grill Restaurant on Sullivan Ave. on Wednesday, April 18 from 5:00pm – 10:00pm. The team gets 20% of the proceeds. Please come out to support the team. See you there.

A reminder to students interested in Clarkson University – an admissions representative will be in the Career Center after school today at 2:00pm. This is a great opportunity for seniors who are making final decisions or juniors who are starting their college search.

Athletic News:
- Congratulations to the boys’ volleyball team for their victory over Bloomfield last night with JV winning 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. The team will travel to Glastonbury Wednesday night. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you there.
