Roller Derby is a competitive sport whose underpinnings are based in athleticism, teamwork, perseverance and comradery. HARD welcomes applications from female athletes who have demonstrated these traits, and can apply these important life skills to their future goals. To this end, HARD invites essays from well qualified candidates to speak about how their experience in sports has contributed to their overall character and how these experiences will help guide them to future success both academically and personally. HARD prides itself on the determination and perseverance of its members and is proud to help advance the education of others who share these ideals. The South Windsor Gay Straight Alliance Day of Silence is coming up on Tuesday, May 22. Participants will take a vow of silence for the day. If you want to show your support but don't feel like you can be silent for the day, consider purchasing a ribbon and bracelet being sold before school in the lobby and during lunch waves this week. Any students wishing to participate in the Day of Silence should see Mrs. Knapp in Room 148 no later than TOMORROW to sign up.

This is an important announcement regarding the JE Shepard Memorial Award given by the South Windsor Jaycees. Due to a lack of applications, the deadline for this scholarship has been extended until Friday, May 25. This scholarship offers $2,000 for a South Windsor High School student who has demonstrated initiative, spirit and integrity in serving his or her community. Applications can be picked up in the Career Center or the School Counseling Office. All completed applications MUST be returned to Mrs. Carty no later than May 25.

-The girls’ tennis team pulled in a victory for the Bobcats yesterday against East Hartford, winning 7-0. All four singles players Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin and Sam Donovan won with double bagels. Also winning with double bagels were 1st doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon. Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon had 6-1 in their first set and a bagel in their second set. 3rd doubles Nikitha Kikanamada and Payal Shah also won 6-3, 6-2. Their next home match is on Wednesday against Manchester.
-The boys’ tennis team had a decisive victory over East Hartford 7-0. Winning for the Bobcats were: Ronnak Saxena, Parker Pacekonis, Rahul Mahesh and Jonathan Huot in Singles and Brandon Sze & Avin Sapowadia, Jeeva Shunmugrara & Sanjin Choksi and Keshav Ramesh & Manav Sheth in Doubles. This brings the team's overall record to 10 wins and 4 losses. As the season is winding down the team is looking forward to the Class L State Tournament. The next match is Wednesday in Manchester; wish the team good luck.
-The boys’ volleyball team took home another regular season win vs. Bulkeley last night. JV won 2-0 and Varsity won 3-1. The team will host Glastonbury tomorrow night, Wednesday 5/16 for their senior game. The JV match start time is 4:00pm and after the varsity team warm-up, approximately 5:00pm; the seniors will be honored in a brief presentation. Hope you can come out and support your fellow Bobcats tomorrow night.
-The boys’ golf team lost a tough one yesterday at home vs. East Catholic but were led by team medalist Jared Walter’s low round of the year bogey free 33.

The Students of the Month for April have been selected. They were nominated by teachers who recognized academic, social, and civic excellence in the actions and behaviors of these students. The students of the month are: for grade 9, Jadyn Freeman and Jaiden Libow; for Grade 10, Ryan Seder and Felipe Cortes; for Grade 11, Khalsie Harris and Josh Lanteri; for Grade 12, Eugenia Yi and Larayne Smith. Students will be receiving their preliminary 2018-2019 class schedules today in homeroom. Students who have questions or concerns about their schedules should complete the Preliminary Schedule Change Form prior to meeting with their school counselor. No schedule changes for first or second semester will occur after the last day of school. All grade 10 and 11 students have one additional form to complete: Lock-IN OR Lock-OUT. Students may choose either Lock-IN or Lock-OUT; however you may not have both. Please read through the academic and behavioral standards for Lock-IN and Lock-OUT. The standards have changed from previous years and you need to understand the importance of Quarter 4 this year.
Students attending the St. Francis field trip are reminded that they need to hand in the additional permission slips to school counseling by Wednesday, May 16.
The Hartford County 4H Camp in Marlborough is seeking a kitchen maintenance person for its summer camp program. The person in this position will assist the chef in kitchen related duties, including salad bar preparation, food storage, washing and sanitizing of equipment and materials, and serving meals. Candidates MUST be at least 18 years of age. For a complete job description and application instructions, see the board in the Career Center.
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a pilot or exploring any career in aviation, you can check out the Young Eagles Rally on June 9 from 9:00am – 3:00pm at Meriden-Markham Airport. Anyone between the ages of 8 and 17 can take a free flight and see what pilots do before, during and after a flight. For an informational flyer about how to participate, see Mrs. Carty or the bulletin board in the Career Center.

-The boys’ and girls’ tennis team played simultaneously on Friday starting at 5:00pm at Berlin High School. The boys came away with a decisive 6-1 victory. Winners for the Bobcats were Ronnak Saxena, Femi Orisamolu, Parker Pacekonis at singles and Elijah Wood & Jack Perry, Neal Shah and Abhiram Gunti and Jason Richenbacher and Dan Kotait. Congrats, gentlemen. With the victory over Berlin the team has officially qualified for the State Tournament. Next up for the Bobcats is Monday at home against East Hartford - come out and cheer for the team.
-The girls’ tennis team had a huge victory for the Bobcats last Friday against Berlin, winning 7-0. All four singles players, Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan had double bagels, and put forth great effort. First doubles Jia Yazon and Leah Polansky had a french fry, scoring 6-1 on both their sets. Second doubles Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon also had a double bagel, and third doubles Julie Harper and Payal Shah also won their match, putting forth strong effort. Their next match is today against East Hartford. Wish them luck.
-The boys’ volleyball hosted a tough Southington team Friday night. JV won a close game 3 to take the 2-1 win, while Varsity lost 3-0. The team will travel to play Bulkeley tonight. Good luck to the team and we hope to see you there.

Seniors who plan to attend college at any of the UConn campuses next fall can get a preview and jumpstart on their college career with the UConn First Summer program. If you have not already received information on this program, please see the Career Center for more information. Registration for the program closes in mid-June.
New job opportunities are posted on the board in the Career Center. K-ROCKETS Engineering and Technology School, an Ellington-based company bringing STEM programs to school-aged youth, is seeking summer camp counselors and STEM instructors for a school year program. Candidates must be at least 16, have reliable transportation, and be enthusiastic about STEM programs. More details and contact information is available on the flyers.

The Metropolitan University Tour will come to Harford on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00pm at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The program features research universities in 5 major cities, including SMU, Tulane, George Washington University, Northeastern and NYU. Representatives will share information about their schools and tips on the application process and answer questions. For more information, visit www.met.tours.
The Exploring College Options spring program will take place at sites throughout New England and NY during the week of May 20. Students interested in learning more about Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn or Stanford can choose from 5 program dates and locations that week. A flier with all options is hanging in the Career Center. Please note that this program usually takes place again in Farmington each fall, but families wanting to get information earlier may choose to drive to these regional locations now.
The Barbara Rosenthal Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for students from diverse and minority backgrounds to explore a career in law or a corporate environment. This 6 week paid internship runs from July 10 – August 16, requiring interns to work 20 hours in a Hartford law firm each week. Interested students with at least a 3.0 GPA can get an application from the Career Center. An essay, letters of recommendation and a transcript are required and are due by May 15.
Class Officer AND Student Council Elections are on Thursday, May 24. All those interested in running for Class Office or Student Council may pick up an application in the main office or Admin 237. All applications are due by Thursday, May 17.

-The girls’ golf team improve their record to 4-3 yesterday with a 35 shot victory over Plainville. Meghna Mazumdar finish first with a score of 43. Aayushi Patel, Cameron Isherwood, and Rachel Maher all played great for the Bobcats.

The Spring Instrumental Concert will be Thursday, May 10 in the Auditorium. At 6:30pm, you can experience Video Games Live! with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. At 8:00pm, the Orchestras will play music from Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, The Beatles, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. Tickets are $5.00 per person. See you there.
Mind's Eye Magazine, South Windsor High School's literary and art magazine, is in the process of creating our 2017-2018 issue, and we'd love to see your work. We are looking for your stories, poems, creative essays, song lyrics, photographs of art, and any other original work that you've created and would like to be considered for the magazine. Please forward your work to Ms. Pieratti, or give a copy to your English or art teacher by Friday, May 11.

Outstanding performances came from the entire lineup. Singles players, Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan, and doubles Jia Yazon and Leah Polansky only lost one game overall, and continue to pull off skillful wins. Doubles Kelly Kozon and Rebecca Kenefick did a great job, winning their first set 6-2 and second set 6-1. Payal Shah and Nikitha Kikanamada won their first set 6-2 and second set 6-0, doing an amazing job. Their next match is on Friday at Berlin with the boys’ tennis team. Wish them luck.
-The boys’ tennis team defeated Enfield/Somers by a score of 7-0. It was a dominant performance and the following players came away with wins: Singles Players: Femi Orisamolu, Jason Richenbacher, Neal Shah and Abhiram Gunti; Doubles Teams: Elijah Wood & Jack Perry and Andris Reba & Wayne Huang. Enfield/Somers defaulted 3rd doubles. And thanks to Ishaan Reddy for volunteering without hesitation to play a special game. His great sportsmanship was really appreciated by the Enfield/Somers coach.
-The boys’ volleyball team had a clean sweep over Bloomfield at home last night with JV winning 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. The team will be home again tomorrow, Friday, May 11 vs. Southington. Please note that the JV start time for that match is 5:00pm with Varsity to follow at approximately 6:00pm. Hope you'll come out and support your fellow Bobcats.

-The girls’ tennis team had an outstanding match Monday, defeating E.O. Smith with a score of 7-0. First singles Caitlin Sze had a double bagel, and great performances came from all other singles, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan. First doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon, second doubles Kelly Kozon and Rebecca Kenefick, as well as third doubles Payal Shah and Nikitha Kikanamada played amazingly, with the whole team winning all their matches. The team’s overall record is 7-1, having lost a tough match to Glastonbury last Friday.
-Yesterday, the girls’ tennis team won against Simsbury, 6-1. Winning for in singles matches were Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan. Varsha, at 2nd singles won with a french fry, while 3rd singles Sophia and 4th singles Sam, both won their matches with double bagels. First doubles Jia Yazon and Leah Polansky had a great win, and second and third doubles were faced with tiebreakers. Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon were able to win their match, and although Julie Harper and Payal Shah didn’t win, they played strong sets. The team’s overall record is 9-1, and their next match is today against Enfield.
-Girls’ golf team improve their record to 3 and 3 yesterday with a five-shot victory over St Paul. Meghna Mazumdar led the way for the Bobcats with a 50. Amala Mammayil finished 4th with a 57.
-Boys’ tennis had another great match, defeating Hall High School 4-3. The match was decided by our strong lineup of singles: Brandon Sze, Ronnak Saxena, Femi Orisamolu and Parker Pacekonis. Match of the Day goes to Parker who won the first 6-1, was down in the second set 2-5, but came back to win the second set in an exciting tiebreak. Way to go Parker. Our next match is Wednesday at home against Enfield/Somers - come and cheer the team onto victory.
-Yesterday, girls track and field won a close meet against Enfield. First place finishers were Micaela Hanson, who won both hurdle events, Shannon Anthony in high jump, Erin Dunn in pole vault, Tiana Barnes in javelin, Kavitha Francis in long jump, and Isabelle Erikson in the 3200. All three relay teams also placed first. Nice job! The next Track meet will be the CT Relays Invitational at home this Saturday.
-The boys’ volleyball team won at NFA last with a JV score of 2 to 0 and varsity score of 3 to 0. The team will host Bloomfield tonight with a 4 pm JV start. Hope you will come out to support your fellow Bobcats.

The girls’ golf team improved their record to 2-3 yesterday with a 26 shot win over East Lyme. Meghna Mazumdar was medalist with a 55. Carolyn McCullough was 2nd 1 shot behind. Aayushi Patel and Amala Mammayil played well.
The Boys’ Golf team beat their best team score by 10 strokes shooting a 156 at Topstone making their record to 4-4 for the season beating Rockville. The Bobcats were led by team medalist Jared Walter’s 37 followed by Melek Israel’s 38, Owen Pelleteir’s 40 Melek and Samay Govani’s 41.
Congratulations to the boys’ volleyball team for earning the win last night at Rockville. The JV won 2-0 and Varsity won 3-1. The team will travel to another out-of-league match when they play at NFA tonight. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you there.
Boys’ tennis played a very close competitive match against E.O. Smith but lost by the score of 3-4. Abhiram Gunti, Rahul Mahesh, Sanjiv Choksi and Jonathan Huot stepped up and played very well in their spots. Winning for South Windsor was #1 Singles Brandon Sze, #2 Doubles Elijah Wood & Sanjiv Choksi and #3 Doubles Andris Reba & Jonathan Huot.
Tuesday the team will be completing their rescheduled match against Hall at home. The team could use your support to bring home a win.

The Barbara Rosenthal Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for students from diverse and minority backgrounds to explore a career in law or a corporate environment. This 6 week paid internship runs from July 10 – August 16, requiring interns to work 20 hours in a Hartford law firm each week. Interested students with at least a 3.0 GPA can get an application from the Career Center. An essay, letters of recommendation and a transcript are required and are due by
May 15.
The Spring Instrumental Concert will be Thursday, May 10 in the Auditorium. At 6:30 pm, you can experience Video Games Live! with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. At 8:00 pm, the Orchestras will play music from Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky,
The Beatles, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. Tickets are $5.00 per person. See you there.
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a pilot or exploring any career in aviation, you can check out the Young Eagles Rally on June 9 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at Meriden-Markham Airport. Anyone between the ages of 8 and 17 can take a free flight and see what pilots do before, during and after a flight. Mind's Eye Magazine, South Windsor High School's literary and art magazine, is in the process of creating our 2017-2018 issue, and we'd love to see your work. We are looking for your stories, poems, creative essays, song lyrics, photographs of art, and any other original work that you've created and would like to be considered for the magazine. -Boys Tennis had their best win this season with a 6-1 victory over Avon. Winning for the Bobcats were Brandon Sze, Ronnak Saxena, Femi Orisamolu and Parker Pacekonis at Singles, and Elijah Wodd & Jack Perry and Jason Richenbacher & Dan Zhu at doubles. The team's record is now 6 wins and 3 losses and looking for win 7 Monday against E.O. Smith. Also the boys’ team would like to congratulate Tyler Branscombe on being the Hartford Courant Boys Swimmer of the Year.
What a great accomplishment!
-On Friday, the girls’ lacrosse team took on Avon in unbelievable games for both varsity and JV. The games were close throughout, with the final winning goals in both games scored with under 10 seconds left. The varsity team won 22-21 and the JV team won 8-7. That day, the team also raised almost $500 to donate to the American Cancer Society. Come support the girls in their next home game against Conard, Tuesday at 4:00 pm on the turf.

The Metropolitan University Tour will come to Harford on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00pm at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The program features research universities in 5 major cities, including SMU, Tulane, George Washington University, Northeastern and NYU. The Exploring College Options spring program will take place at sites throughout New England and NY during the week of May 20. Students interested in learning more about Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn or Stanford can choose from 5 program dates and locations that week. A flier with all options is hanging in the Career Center. Please note that this program usually takes place again in Farmington each fall, but families wanting to get information earlier may choose to drive to these regional locations now.

Reminder… auditions for the fall musical, The Sound of Music, will take place Tuesday, May 15, and Wednesday, May 16 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm in Room 148. Explore Engineering is open to sophomores and juniors and the SPARK Program is open to female students who are currently in grade 6 – 11. -Yesterday, the girls’ lacrosse team took on Ellington. Varsity won with a score of 15-2 and JV shut the team out, 13-0. Today, the team will be taking on Avon in their Coaches vs. Cancer game. Important Junior Prom announcement: The Junior Prom will be held at The Farmington Marriott this Saturday, May 5. Since the prom is on a Saturday, SWHS will be adhering to the following procedure regarding attendance for all juniors and their guests. When a school event such as the Junior Prom occurs on a Saturday, SWHS students and SWHS guests must attend a minimum of five (5) full classes on the Friday before. Students who are absent from school on May 4 or who are dismissed from school for reason of illness may not participate in ANY school activities, including the prom, unless the student has relevant documentation and prior administrative approval.
If you are a senior attending the senior outing to Holiday Hill and need to take the early bus, you must print and return the Early Bus Form to Miss Griswold in Room 227 no later than May 16. The early bus will leave at 2:30pm from the outing. The Early Bus Form can be found on the Class of 2018 website and Google Classroom page.

- JV boys’ tennis won a great competitive match against Avon!! Winning for the Bobcats in straight sets were Jonathan Huot at #1 Singles, Neal Shah at #2 Singles and Sanjov Choksi at 3# Singles. Due to time constraints, we were unable to finish out all the doubles matches. Varsity has a home match today against Hall High School… come out and cheer on the team.
- The girls’ tennis team had an outstanding match yesterday against Bristol Eastern, winning 7-0. Double bagels came from 1st singles Caitlin Sze, 2nd singles Varsha Rathore, and 4th singles Sam Donovan. 3rd singles Sophia Chin and doubles, Jia Yazona and Leah Polansky, and Kelly Kozon and Rebecca Kenefick also played strong matches. Seniors Payal Shah and Julie Harper at third doubles had a tough match, but pulled through successfully. Their next match is Friday against Glastonbury, wish them luck.
- The boys’ volleyball team lost to a tough Lewis Mills team at Home last night. JV lost 2-0 and Varsity 3-2. The team is looking to bounce back tonight while home again vs. Enfield. Good luck to the team, and we hope you come and cheer on your fellow Bobcats.
