-The girls’ tennis team had an outstanding match Monday, defeating E.O. Smith with a score of 7-0. First singles Caitlin Sze had a double bagel, and great performances came from all other singles, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan. First doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon, second doubles Kelly Kozon and Rebecca Kenefick, as well as third doubles Payal Shah and Nikitha Kikanamada played amazingly, with the whole team winning all their matches. The team’s overall record is 7-1, having lost a tough match to Glastonbury last Friday.
-Yesterday, the girls’ tennis team won against Simsbury, 6-1. Winning for in singles matches were Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan. Varsha, at 2nd singles won with a french fry, while 3rd singles Sophia and 4th singles Sam, both won their matches with double bagels. First doubles Jia Yazon and Leah Polansky had a great win, and second and third doubles were faced with tiebreakers. Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon were able to win their match, and although Julie Harper and Payal Shah didn’t win, they played strong sets. The team’s overall record is 9-1, and their next match is today against Enfield.
-Girls’ golf team improve their record to 3 and 3 yesterday with a five-shot victory over St Paul. Meghna Mazumdar led the way for the Bobcats with a 50. Amala Mammayil finished 4th with a 57.
-Boys’ tennis had another great match, defeating Hall High School 4-3. The match was decided by our strong lineup of singles: Brandon Sze, Ronnak Saxena, Femi Orisamolu and Parker Pacekonis. Match of the Day goes to Parker who won the first 6-1, was down in the second set 2-5, but came back to win the second set in an exciting tiebreak. Way to go Parker. Our next match is Wednesday at home against Enfield/Somers - come and cheer the team onto victory.
-Yesterday, girls track and field won a close meet against Enfield. First place finishers were Micaela Hanson, who won both hurdle events, Shannon Anthony in high jump, Erin Dunn in pole vault, Tiana Barnes in javelin, Kavitha Francis in long jump, and Isabelle Erikson in the 3200. All three relay teams also placed first. Nice job! The next Track meet will be the CT Relays Invitational at home this Saturday.
-The boys’ volleyball team won at NFA last with a JV score of 2 to 0 and varsity score of 3 to 0. The team will host Bloomfield tonight with a 4 pm JV start. Hope you will come out to support your fellow Bobcats.
-All Spring athletes are being asked to take a 35 question survey that will be used to help us continue to make improvements in our athletic programs here at South Windsor High School. Your coaches are aware of this request and will adjust practice times accordingly. All athletes of each spring sport must bring their personal Chromebooks to take this survey after school at 2:10pm on the following designated days:

The girls’ golf team improved their record to 2-3 yesterday with a 26 shot win over East Lyme. Meghna Mazumdar was medalist with a 55. Carolyn McCullough was 2nd 1 shot behind. Aayushi Patel and Amala Mammayil played well.
The Boys’ Golf team beat their best team score by 10 strokes shooting a 156 at Topstone making their record to 4-4 for the season beating Rockville. The Bobcats were led by team medalist Jared Walter’s 37 followed by Melek Israel’s 38, Owen Pelleteir’s 40 Melek and Samay Govani’s 41.
Congratulations to the boys’ volleyball team for earning the win last night at Rockville. The JV won 2-0 and Varsity won 3-1. The team will travel to another out-of-league match when they play at NFA tonight. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you there.
Boys’ tennis played a very close competitive match against E.O. Smith but lost by the score of 3-4. Abhiram Gunti, Rahul Mahesh, Sanjiv Choksi and Jonathan Huot stepped up and played very well in their spots. Winning for South Windsor was #1 Singles Brandon Sze, #2 Doubles Elijah Wood & Sanjiv Choksi and #3 Doubles Andris Reba & Jonathan Huot.
Tuesday the team will be completing their rescheduled match against Hall at home. The team could use your support to bring home a win.

The Barbara Rosenthal Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for students from diverse and minority backgrounds to explore a career in law or a corporate environment. This 6 week paid internship runs from July 10 – August 16, requiring interns to work 20 hours in a Hartford law firm each week. Interested students with at least a 3.0 GPA can get an application from the Career Center. An essay, letters of recommendation and a transcript are required and are due by
May 15.
The Spring Instrumental Concert will be Thursday, May 10 in the Auditorium. At 6:30 pm, you can experience Video Games Live! with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. At 8:00 pm, the Orchestras will play music from Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky,

Mind's Eye Magazine, South Windsor High School's literary and art magazine, is in the process of creating our 2017-2018 issue, and we'd love to see your work. -Boys Tennis had their best win this season with a 6-1 victory over Avon. Winning for the Bobcats were Brandon Sze, Ronnak Saxena, Femi Orisamolu and Parker Pacekonis at Singles, and Elijah Wodd & Jack Perry and Jason Richenbacher & Dan Zhu at doubles. The team's record is now 6 wins and 3 losses and looking for win 7 Monday against E.O. Smith. Also the boys’ team would like to congratulate Tyler Branscombe on being the Hartford Courant Boys Swimmer of the Year.
What a great accomplishment!
-On Friday, the girls’ lacrosse team took on Avon in unbelievable games for both varsity and JV. The games were close throughout, with the final winning goals in both games scored with under 10 seconds left. The varsity team won 22-21 and the JV team won 8-7. That day, the team also raised almost $500 to donate to the American Cancer Society. Come support the girls in their next home game against Conard, Tuesday at 4:00 pm on the turf.

The Metropolitan University Tour will come to Harford on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00pm at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The program features research universities in 5 major cities, including SMU, Tulane, George Washington University, Northeastern and NYU. The Exploring College Options spring program will take place at sites throughout New England and NY during the week of May 20. Students interested in learning more about Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn or Stanford can choose from 5 program dates and locations that week. Explore Engineering is open to sophomores and juniors and the SPARK Program is open to female students who are currently in grade 6 – 11. Important Junior Prom announcement: The Junior Prom will be held at The Farmington Marriott this Saturday, May 5. Since the prom is on a Saturday, SWHS will be adhering to the following procedure regarding attendance for all juniors and their guests. When a school event such as the Junior Prom occurs on a Saturday, SWHS students and SWHS guests must attend a minimum of five (5) full classes on the Friday before. Students who are absent from school on May 4 or who are dismissed from school for reason of illness may not participate in ANY school activities, including the prom, unless the student has relevant documentation and prior administrative approval.

On behalf of Dr. Carter and the administrative team at Ellsworth, we would like to extend a very special thank you to all the students who volunteered at the Ellsworth School Open House on Saturday. More than 300 former alumni and faculty attended this event which celebrated more than 80 years of Ellsworth history. The event would not have been possible without the student volunteers who helped park cars, greet guests, and supervise spaces. Thank you all for your time, enthusiasm, and grace!
Congratulations to Bobcat Robotics Team 177 who traveled to Detroit, Michigan for the FIRST World Championships last week and finished as semifinalists of the Darwin Division. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors on a hugely successful season with an amazing robot, a blue banner in Hartford and a third consecutive year traveling to the World Championships. Thank you to all the teachers and the administration for their hard work and support this season, especially: Mr. Savvides, Mr. Smith, Dr. McCarthy, Mr. Wilkinson, Ms. Connolly and Mr. Sytulek.

Playing up to their level, Brandon Sze at #1 Singles had a great competitive 3 set match and the #1 Doubles Team of Parker Pacekonis & Ronnak Saxena also had a highly competitive 3 set match. On Friday an important School Messenger was sent home to students and families. Next fall, juniors and seniors in good academic and behavioral standing may request to have first period “lock-in” study hall and arrive to school 10 minutes prior to second period. We will also continue to offer early release, aka “lock-out” as an option for juniors and seniors in good academic and behavioral standing. It is important to note that students may not have both “lock-in” and “lock-out.” If you would like to request a first period study hall in your schedule for next year, you must email Mrs. Harlow by tomorrow at 8:00am.

The High School Cafeteria will have the El Monterey Tornado Food Truck visiting today during regular lunch waves for students and staff to try some new sample items for future lunch options. Please visit the Tornado Truck outside the rear cafeteria doors, try the items, and give them your feedback.

If you are interested in becoming an engineer or learning more about what it takes to become one, UConn School of Engineering offers 2 summer programs. Explore Engineering is open to sophomores and juniors and the SPARK Program is open to female students who are currently in grade 6 – 11. For more information on these programs, visit the Enrichment Programs section of Naviance. Flyers are also hanging in the Career Center, where you can find information about many summer pre-college and career exploration programs.
If you are a college-bound senior with demonstrated financial need, consider applying for the Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship which offers very generous and renewable funding to students with a 3.0 GPA and a high level of financial need. The application deadline is May 1. Also with a May 1 deadline is the CEF Ethnic Minority Scholarship Fund. This program funds a $2,000 scholarship for students from an ethnic minority group who are pursuing a career in education. Candidates should also have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate involvement in community activities. See Naviance or Mrs. Carty for more information.

Attention Seniors: The annual Senior Art Show will be happening at the South Windsor Public Library in May. If you have taken any art courses during your years at South Windsor High School, this is a fantastic opportunity for you to display your artwork in this juried show. If you are interested in earning an honor cord in art, you will need to participate in the judged section of this Senior Art Show. Applications are due May 4; see your art teacher for details and an application.
If you are a senior attending the senior outing to Holiday Hill and need to take the early bus, you must print and return the Early Bus Form to Miss Griswold in Room 227 no later than May 16. The early bus will leave at 2:30pm from the outing. The Early Bus Form can be found on the Class of 2018 website and Google Classroom page.
The Relay for Life club will hold a brief but mandatory meeting after school on Wednesday, May 2 in room 143. We will be discussing event details and leadership opportunities for next year. Please see Mrs. Frasier with any questions.
There is a limited supply of School Guide magazines available in the Career Center. School Guide is an annual publication that offers tips and planning suggestions for the college admissions process and also provides an extensive state by state list of colleges and military programs. Juniors who are starting their college search process may find it helpful.
It may barely feel like spring out, but it’s not too soon to think about summer plans. If you are looking for unique summer experiences to explore career options or preview college life, check out the Enrichment Programs section in the College Research area of your Naviance account. Thousands of programs can be researched. A smaller selection of brochures and materials are also available to check out or copy in the Career Center.

Athletic News:
-In the first match in South Windsor history, the Girls’ Golf team lost a close match to Manchester yesterday by 6 shots. Meghna Mazumdar was the medalist with a score of 42. Caroline McCullough and Amala Mammayil also scored well for the Bobcats.
-The Girls’ Tennis team won 5/2 against RHAM yesterday. 1st singles Caitlin Sze faced a tough match but came out strong, and singles Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan also won great matches. Doubles also faced heavy competition but 1st doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon were able to win their match. It was a great performance by the team overall. Their next match is tonight at Simsbury, wish them luck.
-After a tough close loss to Glastonbury, Boys Tennis came back strong and determined with a sweep against RHAM, 7-0. Winning for the Bobcats were Brandon Sze, Femi Orisamolu, Elijah Wood, and Jack Perry - all straight set singles victories and Ronnak Saxena & Parker Pacekonis, Andris Reba & Wayne Huang and Donny Sauer and Jonathan Huot - all straight set victories in doubles. The next match is today…home against Hall… come out and show your support.
-The Boys’ Volleyball team traveled to play another tough opponent in East Hartford last night. JV lost 2-1 and Varsity lost 3-0. The team will be back at home for all 3 matches next week, starting on Monday vs. Wethersfield. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you in the bleachers cheering.

The University of Harford Summer Business Institute offers high school students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits while experiencing life as a college student. The selective program runs from July 8 to July 20. Applications are being accepted now, but admission is on a rolling basis until all spots are full. -The boys’ volleyball team ran into a tough Class M opponent last night in Farmington. The JV lost 2-0 and Varsity lost a close one 2-3. The team will travel again tonight to face East Hartford. Good luck to the team, and we hope to see you there supporting your fellow Bobcats.
-On Tuesday, the girls’ track and field team faced Manchester. First place finishes were had by Isabelle Erikson in the 3200, Shannon Anthony in 300 hurdles and high jump, Kavitha Francis in long jump, and Bella Sanchez in triple jump. Strong performances were also had by Katelyn Maycomber and Muneeka Munir. The girls' next meet will be today at E.O. Smith.
