Ever wondered what is inside of a computer? Come to the Seminar Room after school next Wednesday, December 13 and find out! We will be taking apart and assembling some old computers. Everyone is welcome!

Attention Interact Club members: Reminder there is a meeting today in the Seminar Room at 2:05pm. We hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Howard in Room 134.

The Anti-bullying Club will be having their next meeting on Monday, December 11 at 2:00pm in Room 131. Please check the remind app for more information. All are welcome!

The Teen Center will host local organization “Welcome 2 Reality” during high school drop in hours after school today.  Stop in at 2:30pm to hear their informative presentation on the impact of social media on youth.  This presentation is free and sponsored by the Teen Center Youth Council. Please note this is the main activity at the teen center on Thursday -in place of the regular drop in.  Please plan accordingly.  

Skiers and Boarders…permission slips and payment for the Jay Peak trip are due tomorrow!  Turn them in to Ms. Andrews in Room 234C or Mrs. Lynch in Room 254.

This year, our school’s National Honor Society is expanding its tutoring program to cover all subjects and to span the whole school year. If you are looking to receive extra help from one of your peers in NHS for free, please email [email protected].

The 2nd Session of the Jump Start Tutoring Program starts in January. Do you have 2 hours a week available to volunteer and give back to your community? If yes, then join us on Thursday afternoons at TEMS. You will be matched with a middle school student and you will assist them with their homework, studying for exams and working on projects. Transportation is provided. Applications are now available in the High School Counseling Office and are due back by 12/15.

The ASVAB exam signups end TODAY in the School Counseling Office. The test is tomorrow. See Dr. LaRochelle if you have questions.

Athletic News:
All students interested in trying out for the baseball team should attend an informational meeting after school Tuesday, December 12 in Room 161. Any questions, please see Mr. D'Amato.

A reminder to any students interested in the United States Navy, there will be a representative in the Career Center today at 11:00am. Tomorrow morning a representative from Hartford Job Corps will be on hand to discuss opportunities with students. The Job Corps provides career training and education at no cost to you and can assist with housing and job placement along the way. A representative from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts will also be here on Wednesday. All visits are listed in Naviance.

If you are a student that isn’t sure about enrolling in a 4 year college or traditional liberal arts program, you may want to check out the Career Center this week. We will host representatives from a variety of post high school opportunities. Please check Naviance for visit times for the United States Navy, Hartford Job Corps, Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, and Universal Technical Institute. 

Yoga Club meets today at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room. You do not need to be a club member to try yoga with us. Bring a friend and give it a try. For more information contact Ms. Lane.

The Vegan/Vegetarian Club meets today after school in Room 256.  

The Science Fiction/Fantasy Club meets today after school in Room 127.  Join us for snacks while we watch and discuss In Time.  New members are welcome!

The student fan bus for the SWHS state tournament semifinal football game on Sunday 12/3 at Greenwich is available on a first come, first served basis today. Students should stop by the Main Office with completed permission slip and $15 bus/ticket fee to check availability.
 
Sign-ups for the ASVAB test (which will be offered here Thurs., Dec. 7) are in School Counseling. If you have questions, please see Dr. LaRochelle.
 
Yoga Club will meet on Monday at 2:15pm in the Chorus Room to practice yoga. You do not need to be a club member to try yoga with us. All experience levels are welcome! Bring a friend and give it a try. For more information contact Ms. Lane.

Scholarship season is underway! Seniors looking for ways to help pay for college can start taking advantage of scholarship opportunities. Applications for the Big Y scholarship are still available in the Career Center. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has numerous scholarships listed on its website that are now accepting applications (some with January deadlines). Visit www.hfpg.org/scolarships to explore their programs. Naviance also has a thorough listing of scholarships that will start to be updated regularly. Please see Mrs. Carty if you have questions about how to use this as a resource.
 
If you are a senior with a 3.0 average or a composite score of 22 on the ACT, you can apply to be an ACT College & Career Readiness Student Champion. This one-time $500 scholarship is awarded to one student per state. Preference is given to underrepresented or first-generation college students and those who have overcome challenges and can articulate their education and career actions. Information can be found at www.act.org/readinesschampions.
 
Not doing a winter sport? Try out for the spring play this Monday and Tuesday, December 4 and 5, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm in Mrs. White's room, Room 144.

-Boys’ basketball tryouts for freshman only will be tomorrow Saturday 12/2 in the SWHS Main Gym from 10:00am -12:00pm.

-Basketball tryouts for sophomore, junior and senior boys will also take place tomorrow from 12:30pm-3:00pm in the main gym.

There will be a student fan bus for the SWHS state tournament semifinal football game on Sunday 12/3 at Greenwich. There is a $15 charge, which includes the bus and game ticket for admission. Any interested students should sign-up in the Main Office and pay the $15 at the time of sign-up.

SADD would like to thank South Windsor Nation for their generosity during our Sock Drive. With your help we were able to donate over 200 pairs of socks.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, known as the ASVAB, will be offered here Thursday, December 7. Signups are in School Counseling. If you have questions, please see Dr. LaRochelle.

Ever play matchmaker for someone? You might be the perfect candidate for the spring play. Auditions for parts in The Matchmaker, take place Monday and Tuesday, December 4 and 5, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm in Mrs. White's room, Room 144.

A representative from the United States Air Force will be in the Career Center tomorrow morning at 11am.  Interested students should sign up in Naviance and arrive on time to the visit.

Have you ever thought about joining the Peace Corps or getting involved in global community service?  A local student who serves in the Peace Corps and is stationed in Paraguay has offered to come to South Windsor High School while she is home during the holidays and share her experiences with students considering a similar path.  If you would like to learn more about how to be selected for the Peace Corps, what it is like to serve in this role and how you can impact lives in impoverished communities around the world, please see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center. Her visit will be scheduled based on student interest.

Students interested in auditioning for UConn’s School of Fine Arts should note that audition dates are earlier this year due to the January 15 application deadline.  A poster listing all dates is hanging outside the Career Center.

Mind's Eye will hold its monthly meeting today, Tuesday, November 28, at 2:00pm in Room 146. New members are welcome to attend!

Attention students needing helping with their FAFSA form! Manchester Community College is holding FAFSA DAYS to help you complete your application. They will offer a session today from 4:30pm-6:30pm and another one in February. For information on how to register or what to bring with you, go to www.manchestercc.edu/financial-aid or see the flyer hanging in the Career Center.

Bobcat Foodies…join us on a culinary tour of Asia for November's Cooking Club. Bring $5 to Ms. Cliff or Sra. Ruiz to reserve your spot in our next cooking session, November 29. Your money is due tomorrow--we will NOT accept money after Thanksgiving break.

Today Common Ground representatives are collecting cash donations to help children with sickle cell disease. If you would like to donate, you can give cash donations during all lunch waves in the cafeteria
