SCHOOL NEWS:

Attention Seniors: the final wave of Capstone presentations will be held on Thursday, March 23rd. This wave will be virtual.  In order to present, your advisor needs to have scored your written work as successful and you must fill out the Google Form that is posted on the Capstone Website. Reach out to your advisor with any questions.

March is Women’s History Month. In honor of Women’s History Month, on Monday, March 20th after school at 2:15 p.m. there will be an opportunity to view an exhibit from the CT Women’s Hall of Fame, “Rise up Sisters” which features CT Women throughout history. This event will be held in the Social Studies Hallway. Please reach out to Mrs. Slogesky, [email protected] with any questions. 

The library will be closed to study halls and lunch waves on Tuesday, March 21 for the blood drive. Please plan accordingly. 

Attention all SWHS students! Student Council is hosting Trivia Night on March 31st at 6 p.m. All students, teachers and staff are welcome to join and participate!  Cost per competitor is $5. You can compete with a team of up to 5 people. 1st place will get a $200 giftcard to Sakura, 2nd place will get $100 to Oakland Pizza and 3rd place will get $50 to DQ! There will be tons of raffles, too throughout the night. Look out for lunch wave sign ups starting on March 27th. We can't wait for you to join us! Reach out to Ms. Ullinger with any questions!

Please consider nominating a Staff or Faculty member for Staffulty of the Month. Students can nominate faculty and staff for the Staffulty of the Month award. This is someone you feel demonstrates kindness, understanding, encouragement, and more through this school year. Nominations will be reviewed by Student Council officers. Two staff members will be selected every month. They will be recognized at monthly faculty meetings and on the school website. Please be school appropriate with your nominations. You can nominate a staff or faculty member on your class Google Classroom page. Reach out to Ms. Ullinger with any questions!

Does your idea promote kindness or emotional wellness?  Does it support inclusion and respect or foster a positive school community? Does your idea just need a little financial support?  Good news…Youth and Family Services is sponsoring a grant program called “Make a Change Mini Grant” to support students wanting to make a positive impact with their ideas. The application form can be found on the website and all entries must be received by April 7th. Please see Mr. Zeuschner with any questions.

NHS’s Period Committee is hosting a drive for women’s hygiene products. Drop off items from March 20th to March 24th in the Front Lobby. Products will go to the school nurse and a local women’s shelter.

The Environmental Club is selling flowering bulbs to support the purchase of 2 trees which will be planted on school grounds. See Mrs. Eitel in Room 206 to purchase the bulbs from 3/10 to 4/10. 

The National Honor Society's prom dress committee is holding a fundraiser from 3/1 until 4/1. Please bring in any and all gently used prom dresses, jewelry, and shoes to the bin in front of the main office. All items will be donated to Cornerstone Donation Center in Vernon. Please contact Ms. Farrell with any questions.

The South Windsor High School HOPE Club is sponsoring a blood drive with the American Red Cross in the Library on Tuesday, March 21st, 2023 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be free snacks and drinks for donors. If you are healthy and eligible, please donate. Most donations take about an hour, so book your appointment, roll up your sleeve and become a part of the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross. COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

We will have 2 visits to the Career Center on Monday. The United States Marine Corps will be here at 10 a.m. and Lincoln Technical Institute will visit at 12:15 p.m. If you are considering the military or trade school after you graduate, these are both helpful visits to learn about those options. Please sign up in Naviance if you would like to attend.

ATHLETICS:  

We are asking winter athletes to fill out both a Google survey questionnaire that was previously sent out and an additional Google comment survey that will be shared today regarding your winter sport experience.

Tomorrow is the "Relieve the Stress Fest, put on by the SADD Club! Come out to participate in art activities, games, sound meditation therapy and much more!

SCHOOL NEWS:

For the second year in a row, South Windsor High School Science Olympiad has won the State tournament and now has the opportunity to represent Connecticut and SW Bobcats at the National Tournament in Wichita Kansas.These bobcats took home a collective 21 medals across both teams.  
Mehana Nagarur earned medals in all of her events getting 3 second place medals and 1 first place. 
First place medals were won by:
Grace Smith, Nandy Senthilkumar, Kate Luci, Parthiv Malipeddu, Jerome Arunkumar, Dan Stoyanov, and Pragyan Yadav.
Second place medals were won by: Ria Shah, Smirti Rajan, Yunfei Zheng and Cole Murphy
Additional medals were earned by: Joe Nielsen, Arnav Thakrar, Rohan Pruthi, Janani Shanmugam, Rithanya Manjunath, and Ansh Gehtiya
It was an impressive showing by this team who collaborated and worked very hard to earn this recognition. Make sure to congratulate them on their success and wish them luck as they prepare for the National Tournament!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

Looking for something fun to do after school? Join us on Thursday, March 16th after school for the "Relieve the Stress Fest"! Sea Tea Improv will be offering 2 mini sessions so you can try out some Improv activities! You can also meet a therapy dog, get a Kona ice, play some Nukum, create some art and learn a new game! The "Fest" is sponsored by the SADD Club and SW Youth and Family Services!

Attention NHS members: All NHS members will be meeting this Wednesday, March 15th after school in the Cafeteria at 2:00 p.m. Please email the NHS email if you are going to be absent.

Lots of clubs will be offering free activities at the "Relieve the Stress Fest" on Thursday, March 16th! Visit the SADD Club, Cooking Club, Black Student Alliance, FSLA, DECA, Strategy Club, Interact, Students for Mental Health, French Club and the Italian Club. Join us to play some Bocce, Spikeball or Corn Hole, try your luck at Bingo, make a gratitude journal, create some art, make your own stress ball, play a game or visit a therapy dog!

There will be a Softball meeting on Monday 3/13 at 2:10 p.m.in the Media Center Classroom for all student-athletes interested in trying out.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

This is a final reminder to Seniors that the deadline to complete your Dollars for Scholars application is just 5 days away on March 15th. There are no exceptions to this deadline. Our local rep has notified us that many applications are still not complete. Please check your portal carefully to ensure that you have entered as much information as accurately as possible. Please also check your emails for any messages indicating errors in your application. Be especially careful when requesting your transcript or letter of recommendation. You MUST enter the name and contact information for the secretary who works with your school counselor in these fields. Do not use your counselor, a teacher, or any other individual. Directions for this can be found on the Dollars for Scholars homepage where you log into your account. Please come to School Counseling if you are uncertain about your application or contact Mrs. Gimbrone at [email protected].  

ShopRite will hold a job fair at all of its locations on Saturday, March 11th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are interested in working in any aspect of the grocery store, stop by to apply!

Interact is hosting a fundraiser to support the nurses at CCMC. Join us for “Goodies for Nurses” at a frozen yogurt shop in Manchester on March 10th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funds raised will be used to make goodie baskets for the nurses.

Did you know that the amount of funding an animal shelter receives directly impacts the number of animals they can help? Help us help animals by donating your spare change during lunch waves from March 6th thru March 10th. Funds raised will benefit Pack Leaders Rescue of East Hartford.

ATHLETICS:  

Spring sports registration is open in Powerschool. If you plan on playing a Spring sport, be advised that all registration material is due by March 9th. The 3 items you must submit are (1) Powerschool online registration, (2) Payment of $125 in the form of cash, check or online using www.myschoolbucks.com, and (3) A current Physician Statement dated AFTER  June 1, 2022. Please note that if you submitted a physician statement for a previous sport in the 22-23 school year, you do not need to resubmit one. Your registration is INCOMPLETE until all 3 of these items are submitted to the main office. Registration deadline is March 9th. Registrations submitted after March 9th are not guaranteed to be processed in time for tryouts. Contact the main office with any questions. FBLA is selling shamrocks for $1 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Each shamrock will be displayed with your name in the FBLA showcase. Purchase a shamrock or make a donation from March 6th through March 10th.

ATHLETICS:  

All students interested in trying out for the baseball team should attend an informational meeting Tuesday, March 7th after school in Room 161. Any questions, please see Mr. D'Amato.
                                                                                                                                                                            Any girls interested in joining Track and Field who have not participated at the high school level before and did not attend the first meeting should attend an informational meeting from 2:05 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room 127 on Wednesday, March 8th. Please see Ms. McCullough in Room 127 with any questions.

Spring sports registration is open in Powerschool. If you plan on playing a Spring sport, be advised that all registration material is due by March 9th.
