This Monday, October 11th, 2021, we will be celebrating Indigenous People’s Day in South Windsor for the very first time! This is a day to observe, to reflect, and to connect through learning about the rich history of Indigenous Peoples that lived on, and protected, this land for many years before colonization.
As part of this celebration we would like to start today with a land acknowledgement. A land acknowledgement is a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of the lands we live on. The rich, fertile soil of the flood-prone South Windsor meadows was the summer home of the Podunks, and used for thousands of years for agriculture, just as the meadows are still largely used today.  We thank them for their strength and resilience in protecting this land, and aspire to uphold our responsibilities according to their example.
We will continue to honor the past, present, and futures of Native peoples as we approach Native American History Month which begins on November 1st. You can look forward to more stories and history throughout the entire month.
