SCHOOL NEWS
New this year! Select your own locker! ALL students will be able to request a specific locker - granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once you find a locker that you would like to use, please click the link below to complete the request form and we will remove the bolt. Students: A friendly reminder, be sure to purchase Chromebook insurance for the 2021-2022 school year. The cost is $26 and covers accidental damage. To join the insurance program, you may pay online through My School Bucks OR make out a check for $26 to SWPS and write the student ID number, grade and "Chromebook" on the memo line and drop it off to the Main Office. Insurance is due by Friday, September 17th.
 
The back-to-school yearbook sale is extended! Buy the 2022 SWHS Yearbook at just $55, its lowest cost of the year. In addition, you can get up to four free icons, and reduced-priced personalization! This sale will not last long. Order yours before Friday, September 17th, on the SWHS Website. 
 
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES
The SADD Club is back! If you were in the club previously, you are a Junior or a Senior AND you are interested in applying for a leadership position, please come to a meeting at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14th in the Seminar Room. This meeting is ONLY for those who are interested in holding some type of leadership position in the club this year. Please reach out to Mrs. Reed if you have any questions.
 
We are excited to announce that musical theatre is back! As you may notice from the flyers in the hallways, we are calling on actors, singers, dancers, instrumentalists, and even stage crew for Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka! Auditions are Tuesday, September 14th right after school in the auditorium. We have many parts to cast, including chocolate lover Augustus Gloop, spoiled rich girl Veruca Salt, Willy Wonka himself, and even oompa-loompas. All you have to do is prepare one 24-bar musical theatre solo to sing. Come on down to audition and bring a friend. Please see Mrs. Balducci in the main office to sign up. Don't miss this chance to perform right here at South Windsor High.

It's time for the 9th Grade Class of 2025 elections! If you are interested in running for office, please fill out a Candidate Application Form. They can be found on the 9th Grade Class of 2025 Google Classroom. Positions available are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Attention all students! Are you interested in getting more volunteer hours? Develop leadership skills and connect back to the community? Interact Club is starting up again for the year! An informational meeting will be held on Thursday, September 23rd from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. in the Media Center Classroom! We will also be revealing our new classroom code for the 21-22 school year! COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER
College visits begin this week in the Career Center! This is the best way to learn more about colleges you may be considering and let them get to know you too. All visits will be in-person this year. Please speak to your teacher for permission before missing class time to attend. This week’s colleges include: Holy Cross, Lynn University, Albertus Magnus, St. John’s University, Saint Michael’s, Merrimack College, and UConn. To register for any visit, go to Naviance Student, find the listing of visits under What’s New and click on “more info” to register. See Mrs. Carty if you have any questions.

In order to try out, all online registration forms must be submitted to the main office, including an updated Physician's Statement dated after June 1st. We have a new look with extra activities and a lot of games, so come check it out! If you haven’t been here before, we are located at the Community Center across from the high school. Space is limited so please contact Danielle to reserve a spot.
 
If you’re interested in gaining leadership skills, building connections with others, and have a passion for participating in community service opportunities join our Youth Council volunteer group! We volunteer year-round in the South Windsor community doing fundraisers and donation drives, volunteering at the Farmer’s Market, assisting with Senior Center events, helping at the Mud Run, etc. It’s a great way to get involved, meet others and build resume experience. For more information please contact Danielle or join us on Friday, September 10th at 2:30 p.m. at the Teen Center.

One free breakfast and one free lunch are available daily for ALL students. Federal guidelines specify that free meals provided must be complete meals which are an entrée, drink and fruit/vegetable. A la carte items are still available for purchase.

SAGA (South Windsor Sexuality and Gender Alliance) will hold its first meeting on Thursday, September 9th in room 148 at 2:10 p.m. SAGA is a group committed to advocating for equity and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community, and educating our broader community. We will enjoy snacks and make plans for the coming year. All are welcome -- you do not have to identify as LGBTQ+ to participate -- allies are important!

If you are a junior or senior who has a cumulative, weighted GPA of at least 3.67, you should have received a letter in the mail notifying you of your candidacy. If you do not receive a letter but think you qualify, please see Mrs. Farrell as soon as possible. All eligible students should also attend an informational meeting TODAY via Google Meet. Additional selection materials will be provided at that time.
 
Are you interested in debate? Politics? Solving real world problems? If so, Model UN is the club for you. We represent countries at the United Nations as they attempt to solve real world problems, like COVID-19, the refugee crisis, and climate change. If interested, please join our NEW Google Classroom, using code: jw75crg. Our first meeting is Wednesday, September 8th in the Cafeteria. To join the insurance program, you may pay online through My School Bucks OR make out a check for $26 to SWPS and write the student ID number, grade and "Chromebook" on the memo line and drop it off to the Main Office. Insurance is due by Friday, September 17th.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER
The Career Center is starting to get announcements of part-time job openings for students interested in working during the school year. For information on these opportunities, be sure to check out the big screen TV outside School Counseling, the bulletin board inside the Career Center and pay attention to the daily announcements. Current opportunities include Munson’s Chocolates, South Windsor Parks a & Rec’s 4th R program, and White Oaks Assisted Living
 
ATHLETICS
Did you miss spring tryouts for the South Windsor High School Cheerleading Team? It's not too late! Fall Tryouts for the 2021-2022 team will be held on Monday, September 13th, and Wednesday, September 15th, from 4 pm to 6:30 pm in the wrestling room. You must attend both days. In order to try out, all online registration forms must be submitted to the main office, including an updated Physician's Statement dated after June 1st. For more information, see Coach Gionfriddo in room 213.

Beginning today, Senior Parking Permit Applications will be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year. Permits will only be available to seniors at this time. The application can be found on the SWHS website under Forms. A fee of $100 along with all required documentation must be turned in with the application. No incomplete applications will be accepted. Applications can be dropped off in the Main Office or in Admin 237.  
 
Seniors: Two new scholarships are now available! The South Windsor Soccer Club Scholarship is open to former members of the soccer club who would like to continue their education next year. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded, and applications are due Wednesday, June 16th. The Red Sox Service Scholarship is for seniors who make an impact through service in their community. There will be multiple $1,000 scholarship winners who will be invited to attend a game at Fenway Park. The application is due Friday, June 25th. Both opportunities are listed in Naviance in the scholarship database.
 
If you are a graduating senior about to enter a trade school or community college in a trades program, a new scholarship has been created and applications have become available! You can find the Greater Hartford Trades Scholarship in Naviance or come to the Career Center for help. The packing and shipping company will train all employees and is in need of part-time, full-time and summer help. If you have ever wondered what your neighborhood would look like from the sky or have been curious about airplanes or being a pilot, you may want to check out the Young Eagles Rally at Meriden-Markham Airport on Saturday, June 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants will take a FREE flight and see what real pilots do. You must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and you can register at the event. If you would like to see a flyer with more details, please stop by the Career Center and look on the bulletin board marked “Programs and Events”.
