Tomorrow, February 1st, marks two important events, one in the present and one in the past. People all across the United States will begin commemorating African-American History Month. At South Windsor High please check out the posters celebrating African-American writers and the showcase in the Pendulum area recognizing significant figures from African-American History. Tomorrow is also the 60th Anniversary of the Greensboro Sit-in when four African American college students stood up to segregation by staying seated at a lunch counter that refused to serve African Americans. Their courage inspired a movement that led to sit-ins throughout the segregated South by college and high school students and helped lead to the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

Although the deadline has passed for the largest group of scholarships through the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, there are still individual scholarships available from the foundation. Two scholarships designated ONLY for South Windsor students are the Julie Veilleux Scholarship for senior girls and the Joyce Picard Scholarship for students pursuing careers in STEM or health related fields. Both scholarships have February 1st deadlines and can be found in Naviance.
