Attention all Seniors: If you have not taken your senior portraits yet, we encourage you to sign up for the free session here at the high school on Thursday, September 19th. The Math Team is getting ready to build on its 2nd place finish in the state last year.  Any new or returning members are invited to attend our first Math Team meeting of the year this Friday, September 13th after school in room 265 to discuss the upcoming season.  Please see Mr. Brindisi if you cannot attend.

Seniors: If you are looking for help starting or completing your college applications and essays, come to an open workshop in the Career Center next week on Monday and Thursday. School Counseling staff will be available Monday during 8th period and after school and Thursday after school to help you with your CommonApp, college essay, and all of your college application question. No appointment needed.

The Teens Against Poverty club had their first meeting Wednesday September 11th. For all of those who are still interested, but could not attend the meeting, please join the Google Classroom using code: glqjpu7.

Also, if you are interested in becoming a Committee Leader for Teens Against Poverty, interviews will be held on Monday 9/16 or Wednesday 9/18.  Please sign up on the doc posted in the google classroom. Africa is a huge and incredibly diverse continent but is frequently stereotyped as a monolith. If you've ever wanted to learn more about the various peoples, food, pop culture, and current life in different African countries, you have to check out the African American Culture Appreciation Club. Or perhaps you have first-hand experiences and connections with an African culture--we'd love to hear your perspective! All students are welcome and there will be snacks. Attention Juniors and Seniors in an UConn ECE course: if you have already attached your parental consent form to UConn’s website, please use your UConn NET ID in the UConn SAS system to enroll in your class(es). Your deadline is September 30th. For those who have not uploaded the parental consent form, you can still take part in this program for an extra $25 late fee. You have until September 16th to do so, and then you have until September 30th to use your NET ID in the UConn SAS system to enroll in your class(es). See Mr. Wry in Guidance with any questions. 

Do you want to volunteer in a river clean up this year? Do you want to spread environmental awareness to the community and local politicians? Everyone with any environmental knowledge, background, or interest is welcome to join Environmental club’s first meeting next Thursday, September 19th at 2:00 p.m. in room 206. The Future Health Professionals (formerly called HOSA) will be having an informational meeting of the year after school on Monday, September 23rd in Room 204. This club is for anyone interested in a career in the medical field or healthcare. We explore different fields and interests and have guest speakers come in to talk about their career experiences. College and career visits start next week in the South Windsor High School Career Center! If you are a senior these are outstanding opportunities to meet representatives from colleges, military branches and other options available to you after graduation. Juniors may also want to start checking these out. Follow the morning announcements, the white board outside the Career Center and Naviance to see what visits are scheduled. We kicks things off Monday with the University of Rochester at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, the Career Center welcomes Hartwick College, Saint Anselm College, Merrimack College and Lesley University. Sign up in Naviance and see Mrs. Carty with any questions.

If you are interested in Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Rice University, or The University of Chicago, these schools are teaming up to present “Exploring Education Excellence”. Shalom! Jewish Culture Club, JCC, is a new and popular club here at the high school. Our main focus is celebrating diversity and all cultures, religions, and ethnicities. Here, all students will learn and experience different aspects of the Jewish culture, and have a fun, social experience that will be sure to bring together people of all cultures. Are you looking for a quiet place after school to get your homework done? Could you benefit from checking in with a tutor or teacher a couple days a week? If yes, the academic support center is the place for you! The ASC starts on Monday, September 9th. It runs every Monday through Thursday in room 122A from 2:00 - 3:30.  Sign up forms are in School Counseling and the Main Office. See Mrs. Barrett if you have any questions. 

Attention Students: The library will close this week at 2:30. Please plan accordingly.  

Any NHS student who would like to work as a tutor for the Academic Support Center after school on Monday through Thursday from 2:00 - 3:30 in room 122A, please see Mrs. Barrett. You can tutor one day or multiple days. 

The Computer Science Club is looking for new members. All are welcome at our first meeting on next Wednesday, September 11th right after school in the Media Center Project Room. No coding experience necessary. See Mrs. Lang for details.

Got plans on Saturday? Come on out to the Wapping Fair to watch our very own art teacher Mr. Zilinski representing SWHS in the celebrity-teacher charity corn hole challenge! Mr. Zilinski will team up with a celebrity for the chance to win $1000 for our school. The double elimination tournament starts at 2:00 p.m.

The National Honor Society is currently inviting eligible candidates to complete the selection process. If you are a junior or senior who has a cumulative, weighted GPA of at least 3.67, you should receive a letter in the mail notifying you of your candidacy. If you do not receive a letter but think you qualify, please see Mrs. Farrell in the Math Office. All eligible students should also attend the general body meeting on Wednesday, September 4th at 2:10 p.m. in the cafeteria. Additional selection materials will be provided at that time.

Do you have a favorite book or series? Do you mourn the deaths of fictional characters? Have you been looking for suggestions of new books to read? Come join us! The first meeting of the Book Club will be on Wednesday, September 4th at 2:00 p.m. in Room 100. New members are welcome. See Mrs. Busa if you have any questions.

The National Honor Society is currently inviting eligible candidates to complete the selection process. If you are a junior or senior who has a cumulative, weighted GPA of at least 3.67, you should receive a letter in the mail notifying you of your candidacy. If you do not receive a letter but think you qualify, please see Mrs. Farrell in the Math Office. All eligible students should also attend the general body meeting on Wednesday, September 4th at 2:10 p.m. in the cafeteria. Additional selection materials will be provided at that time.

If you are looking for a part-time job as the school year gets underway, come to the Career Center and check out the opportunities posted. Current positions include lifeguards and swim instructors at the Y, working at the South Windsor High School branch of United Bank, and working for Boost Mobile. Information about how to apply is posted on the flyers.

Attention Juniors and Seniors in an UConn ECE course: if you have already attached your parental consent form to UConn’s website, please use your UConn NET ID in the UConn SAS system to enroll in your class(es). Your deadline is September 30th. For those who have not uploaded the parental consent form, you can still take part in this program for an extra $25 late fee. You have until September 16th to do so, and then you have until September 30th to use your NET ID in the UConn SAS system to enroll in your class(es). See Mr. Wry in Guidance with any questions.

Any Freshman or Sophomore interested in being a youth member of the state’s congressional cabinet should see Mr. Wry in Guidance by September 3rd. This opportunity entails quarterly meetings in Hartford on Saturdays where youth members work with legislators in order to provide insight and created frameworks of legislation on civic affairs.

Any Junior or Senior interested in being a Connecticut Youth Senator should see Mr. Wry in Guidance by September 3rd. This opportunity entails traveling to Washington D.C. in March for a Youth Senate Forum dedicated to having adults work with students on our countries pressing issues. This very prestigious position is highly competitive among Connecticut’s high schools and also comes with a college scholarship component.

Got plans on Saturday? Come on out to the Wapping Fair to watch our very own art teacher Mr. Zilinski representing SWHS in the celebrity-teacher charity corn hole challenge! Mr. Zilinski will team up with a celebrity for the chance to win $1000 for our school. The double elimination tournament starts at 2:00 p.m.! Hope to see you there!

The Teens Against Poverty is a new club this year at SWHS, helping end poverty in the local area! Join this great community service opportunity on Wednesday, September 11th in Room 141 for the first meeting. At the first informational meeting, we will discuss how the club functions and all the opportunities you have to participate! There will be snacks! Athletic News:

Any girls trying out for Volleyball should pick-up a tryout information packet in the Main Office by this afternoon.
