Mind's Eye is accepting submissions through Friday. Submit your original fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or art for an opportunity to be published in our yearly magazine! You can bring your submission to room 129, email Ms. Flachsbart, or contact one of the Mind's Eye members. The top entries in each category will receive a gift card prize. 

Unified Sports has their last home game on Tuesday, March 12 at 3:00 pm in the main gym. Come out and show some support!

The American Mathematics Contest results are in, and here they are: The school winner for the AMC 12 is senior Eldon Perkins with a score of 91.5. Senior Samantha Donovan finished in 2nd place with a score of 81, and junior Noah Leibowitz finished in 3rd with a score of 78. The school winner for the AMC 10 is freshman Aryan Kalia with a score of 127.5. Freshman Michael Ngo finished in 2nd place with a score of 99, and 8th grader Yunfei Zheng finished in 3rd with a score of 94.5. Eldon and Aryan also qualified for the next level of competition, the very challenging American Invitational Math Exam. Best of luck in that endeavor! Any student who took the AMC 10 or AMC 12 can now see their math teacher for their scores.

Any Senior who still needs to present their Capstone project, the next wave of presentations will be on Wednesday, March 27. To sign up to present, please fill out the Google Form located off of the Capstone webpage or in Mr. Richard's and Ms. Walsh's Capstone Google Classroom. Please sign up ASAP so we can ensure you get a time slot.  

Students interested in a field trip next Tuesday during the Professional Development day to Eastern CT State University should come to School Counseling to pick up a permission slip. This trip will include an informational session, tour, and free lunch. 

The Wednesday, March 13 Unified Theater meeting is cancelled this week.

The Interact Badminton Tournament scheduled for March 22 has been postponed. Stay tuned for the new date!

NHS is putting together a prom dress drive from March 9 to March 23. People can bring their gently used prom dresses and accessories to the community center. 

Seniors – you have only 3 days until the Dollars for Scholars deadline. Be sure to finish up your applications and come into School Counseling or the Career Center if you have any last questions or need help. Also take note of a number of other scholarships in Naviance that are due by the end of this week or the end of the month. There are a lot of great opportunities!

Athletic News:

Varsity Boys Tennis will have a preseason meeting Thursday, March 14 in room 102 from 4:00 -5:00 pm. Tryouts start on Monday, March 18. Anybody interested in trying out should plan on attending the March 14 meeting.

The first day of Baseball tryouts will be Saturday, March 16 at the Rotary Hitting Facility. Freshman will tryout from 9:00 - 10:30 am and JV/Varsity from 11:00 – 1:00 pm. Please bring indoor and outdoor gear to tryouts. Any questions, please see Mr. D'Amato.

There will be a Boys Volleyball informational meeting on Thursday, March 14 in room 102 from 2:30-3:30 pm. Boys Volleyball tryouts will begin this Saturday 8:00 – 11:00 am.

Student Council is hosting the 2nd Annual Trivia Night on Friday, March 15 at 6:30 pm in the Cafe! Sign up with teams up to 5 during your lunch waves. Team registration costs $10 total. 1st place will win a $200 gift card to Sakura, 2nd place will win a $100 gift card to Friendly's and 3rd place will win a $50 gift card to Dairy Queen!  Come sign up for the fun!

The Science Fiction/Fantasy club meeting will be held TODAY, Monday, March 11. Join us to watch and discuss Edge of Tomorrow in room 127 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.

The Italian Club will have pizza and a movie right after school TODAY, Monday, March 11 in room 226.  Please bring $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli if you haven't done so already.

Interact is hosting a Badminton Tournament on Friday, March 22 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm in the school gym. It is $10 per team of two and sign-ups will be up in the cafeteria at lunch this week and next week. All the money will go towards purchasing supplies for Our Companions Animal Rescue in Manchester. Any questions, please see Mrs. Howard in room 134.

Hey Bobcat Foodies! The Cooking Club will be meeting this Wednesday, March 13, after school in room 105.  We'll be planning our delicious March menu. This meeting is mandatory for officers but anyone can attend. See you there!

Junior Capstone Update: All Juniors need to turn in a signed Capstone Adviser contract to Mr. Richards in room 163 or Ms. Walsh in room 158 by TODAY, Friday, March 8. If you fail to do so, an adviser will be assigned to you.

Come to School Counseling or the Career Center if you need help with your application. Don’t forget about the numerous other scholarship opportunities in Naviance. There are a few scholarships due before the end of this month and many more coming up with March deadlines.

Current 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students are invited to attend and explore their interests in Bristol Tech’s career and technical programs including Precision Machining, Culinary Arts, Electronics, Automotive, HVAC and Welding. There is a flyer in the Career Center or for more information go to bristol.cttech.org.

A cadet from the United States Coast Guard Academy will make a recruiting visit to the Career Center tomorrow, Friday, March 8 at 9:45 am.  If you have a particular interest in the Coast Guard Academy or even would like to know more about the process of getting into a military academy, please take advantage of this great opportunity.

The Math Team wrapped up its league season with a great performance finishing 2nd in their final meet of the Capitol Area Math League. High scorer for the team was Jaideep Naik, with strong performances by Aryan Kalia, Pranav Ramesh, Neal Shah, Anthony Chen, Michael Ngo, and Keshav Ramesh. The team finishes in 2nd place in the highest division of the league, South Windsor's best ever finish. The Math Team is now focused on preparing for the state and New England meets, which they have earned invitations to based on their strong league performance.

Any SWHS student-athlete wishing to participate in our final NLI signing/Athlete Recognition Day on March 11, should notify Athletic Director, Dave Sytulek of this intent to reserve your spot. The celebration will take place in the Library Media Center Seminar room at 8:00 am. The deadline to participate in this recognition day is TODAY by 2:00 pm.

A big Congratulations to South Windsor High Schools Varsity Gymnasts Erin Dunn and Samantha West. Sophomore, Erin Dunn earned First team All-State on the Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Erin also qualified to compete on the Floor Exercise at The New England Championships. Senior, Samantha West earned first team All-State on vault and balance beam, and Second team All-State on uneven bars and floor exercise. She also earned first team All-State in the All Around.

The Chamber Orchestra will perform this Saturday, March 2 at 3:00 pm in the Wood Memorial Library. A ten dollar donation supports both the Library and our April trip to Festivals of Music in Boston.

Athletic News:

All athletes interested in Spring Sports must complete the athletic registration online and submit their physician’s statement and pay for play fee to the main office by Monday, March 4 in order to participate on the first day of tryouts on Saturday, March 16. Athletes that competed this fall or winter in a sport who are interested in a spring sport should notify office secretary Ms. Zaino or Ms. Mulcahy of this intent, so your paperwork can be rolled over to that spring sport. These athletes must also submit their physician’s statement and pay for play fee to the main office by March 4.

The Drug Free Committee is hosting the 6th Annual Volleyball Marathon on Friday, March 1 from 6:00 pm to 1:30 am. There will be food, drinks and raffle prizes.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) will hold an information session this Saturday, March 2 at 10 am at the Goodwin Hotel in Hartford. Students interested in creative careers in art or design will meet one-on-one with an admission representative, hear about student life at SCAD and discover how to launch a career in the creative industry. Attention Sophomores and Juniors: The Capital Region Education Council (CREC) is looking for students interested in their CRILA (Cry-La) leadership academy. This prestigious academy meets monthly throughout the 2019-20 school year and its purpose is to train students towards becoming more effective leaders through various pieces of training and exercises. In addition, there is a 7-day camping trip in Maine this June for those accepted. If interested in applying or getting more details, please visit Mr. Leon in School Counseling.

Athletic News:

All athletes interested in Spring Sports must complete the athletic registration online and submit their physician’s statement and pay for play fee to the main office by Monday, March 4 in order to participate on the first day of tryouts on Saturday, March 16. Athletes that competed this fall or winter in a sport who are interested in a spring sport should notify office secretary Ms. Zaino or Ms. Mulcahy of this intent, so your paperwork can be rolled over to that spring sport. These athletes must also submit their physician’s statement and pay for play fee to the main office by March 4.

The South Windsor Sexuality and Gender Alliance will meet TODAY, Wednesday, February 27 at 2:00 pm in room 148. Are you interested in supporting LGBTQ rights and issues? Join us! 

The Japanese Club will meet TODAY, Wednesday, February 27 after school in room 230. Learn some Japanese, watch anime and eat some Japanese food.

There will be a brief meeting TODAY, Wednesday, February 27 from 2:05-2:20 pm in room 233 for all students involved in the Travel Club Fundraising Group. Please see Sra. Ruiz if you can't attend.

The Strategy Club will meet on Thursday, February 28 in room 7.  We're looking for people interested in playing board games and card games. 

Bobcat Robotics will host a Pasta Dinner and Teacup Raffle on Saturday, March 2 at 5:00 pm in the Cafeteria. Prizes include tickets to local attractions, restaurant gift cards, and so much more! Come support Bobcat Robotics in our mission to win a third world championship. Tickets will be $5 if you buy ahead of time and will be sold during lunch waves.

Seniors: The Dollars for Scholars portal will close on March 15. While many of you have started applications, a large portion of you have not reached full applicant status. Come to School Counseling or the Career Center if you need help with your application. Don’t forget about the numerous other scholarship opportunities in Naviance. There are a few scholarships due before the end of this month and many more coming up with March deadlines.

February 26 at 2:10 pm in the cafe will be the last day for winter athletes to take the athletic survey.  Any winter athlete who has not already taken this survey is encouraged to attend. Congratulations to Cooper Nodden on winning the 170 pound State Open Championship on Saturday afternoon. He will now represent Bobcat Nation in the New England Championships in Providence.
