The next wave of capstone presentations will be on January 17. All written work must be turned into your adviser on or before Friday, January 4. If you do not present and pass capstone in January you could then be placed in a structured study hall during second semester to help you complete your capstone work. This change in schedule could mean your early release privilege is revoked. Please reach out to your adviser for help in completing your capstone. A checklist is posted on the Senior Capstone website to aid you in finishing your project.
Yesterday, the Math Team beated the 25 other teams in the Capitol Area Math League, winning for the 2nd time in 3 league meets this season. Turning in perfect meets for the Bobcats were Keshav Ramesh, Aryan Kalia, Michael Ngo, Pranav Ramesh, Neal Shah, and Samantha West. Halfway through the league season, South Windsor is in 2nd place in the standings, just behind leader Avon.

The second session of the Jump Start Tutoring Program will start in the beginning of January and will run through early March. This is your opportunity to help a middle school student with their homework and give back to our community! Jump Start is held each Thursday afternoon and transportation is available. The Coolidge Scholarship program is open for this year. This highly selective scholarship is for JUNIORS only. If selected, recipients will receive a full-ride scholarship for four years of undergraduate study to any American college or university. The application deadline is Wednesday, January 23. There will be a member of the United States Marines here to discuss the NROTC Scholarship program on Tuesday, December 18 at 1:00 pm. NROTC stands for Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. Today is Day 5 of “Safe Teen Driving Awareness Week”. Being a responsible passenger can make a huge difference. For example:
- Never get into a car with a driver you know or suspect is impaired.
- Do not be a distraction to the driver (avoid being loud or showing them something which takes their eyes off the road)
- Answer the driver’s phone or text for them if necessary
- If you feel unsafe – speak up! Know it’s okay to call 911 if you feel you are in danger.
Fact: Teen motor vehicle crashes are preventable and you can make it happen when you know the risks, make a commitment to yourself and your friends and “Drive 4 Tomorrow”. These messages have been brought to you by !MPACT, an organization of parents, relatives and friends who have lost teens in car crashes. They want you to be safe and “Drive 4 tomorrow”.

Today is Day 4 of “Safe Teen Driving Awareness Week”. It’s hard to understand why some drivers and passengers choose not to wear their seatbelts when it’s known they save lives. Of the teens who died in passenger vehicle crashes in 2016, at least 48% were not wearing a seat belt. Research shows that seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half. Regardless of how uncomfortable you may find them to be or how short a trip you are on, the smart choice is to always buckle up and “Drive 4 Tomorrow”. Fact: When a teen driver has an additional passenger with them, the risk of getting into a fatal car crash doubles and if two or more passengers are present the odds are five times as likely. Did you know that in 2017, only 59% of high school students reported they always wear seat belts when riding as passengers?

Just a reminder that any student-athletes wishing to participate in this upcoming Monday’s NLI Signing Day for Athlete Recognition in the SWHS Library Media Center Seminar Room at 8:00 am should notify Athletic Director, Dave Sytulek if they have not done so already. The deadline to participate in this recognition day is today, December 6 at the close of school. There will be a second Recognition Day in the spring on Monday March 11 for any other student-athletes signing later in the year. This will also be held in the SWHS Library Media Center Seminar room at 8:00 am on that day.

Today is Day 3 of “Safe Teen Driving Awareness Week”. Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from the road. Distracted driving is now commonly referred to as the “new drunk driving.” Common distractions include but are not limited to:
- Cellphone usage including texting
- Passengers actions (loud & rowdy behavior or encouraging risky driving)
- Eating or drinking
- Adjusting a GPS or the radio
- Fixing your hair or applying make-up
The key to “Driving 4 Tomorrow” is to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and your mind focused on driving. Fact: Did you know that dialing a phone number increases the risk of crash by 12 times and that reaching for an item other than a cell phone increases the risk of a crash by nine times?

Ms. Lane and the students taking part in the Leadership Greater Hartford Common Ground Program would like to thank everyone who donated to Coram Deo last week. We were able to donate almost $200 to this organization dedicated to helping women recovering from addiction and abuse. We are excited to announce there was a tie in our homeroom competition. Mrs. O'Reilly and Mrs. Ziff's homerooms will receive their prize this Friday. Thank you again for your generous donations.
