This is an important announcement regarding the JE Shepard Memorial Award given by the South Windsor Jaycees. Due to a lack of applications, the deadline for this scholarship has been extended until Friday, May 25. This scholarship offers $2,000 for a South Windsor High School student who has demonstrated initiative, spirit and integrity in serving his or her community. Applications can be picked up in the Career Center or the School Counseling Office. All completed applications MUST be returned to Mrs. Carty no later than May 25.
Athletic News:
-The boys’ tennis team was once again victorious with a 7-0 win against Simsbury. Winning in Singles were Brandon Sze, Ronnak Saxena, Femi Orisamolu and Parker Pacekonis. Every singles match was one with what is known in tennis as a double bagel - 6-0, 6-0. Winning in straight set wins in Doubles were Jack Perry & Elijah Wood and Sam Kim & Donny Sauer. The team currently has a record of 13 wins and 4 losses. In addition the team had a record of 6 wins and 1 loss against our CC East opponents which meant they captured first place in that division. All their hard work and determination have paid off. The last match of the season is Tuesday at Southington… Good luck, Bobcats.
-The boys’ volleyball team ended their regular season on a high note defeating East Hartford last night at home. The JV team won 2-0 and Varsity won 3-1. Both teams avenged their previous loss to their opponent and the Varsity team earned a better seeding in both upcoming tournaments. The Varsity team will play in the first round of the CCC tournament tonight when they travel to Newington for a 3:45pm start time. Good luck to the team, hope to see you there.
-Attention all members of the boys’ volleyball team. Today's bus to the CCC tournament match at Newington is at 2:10pm, with a match start time of 3:45pm. -The girls’ golf team improved their record to 6-4 with a 20 shot victory over Bacon Academy shooting their season best 215. Meghna Mazumdar was medalist with a 43. Caroline McCullough, Aayushi Patel and Rachel Maher all played well.

Attention Seniors: South Windsor Administrator Association Perseverance Award and Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating SWHS student that has overcome academic, social, or personal challenges during their 4 years of high school. The award decision will be based on a short 500 word writing prompt, extracurricular activities, and academics. -The girls’ tennis team ended their regular season with a strong win against East Catholic last Friday, winning 7-0. Their overall score for the season is 14–1. Singles Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore and Sophia Chin all won with a bagel, and so did 1st doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon and 2nd doubles Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon. 4th singles Sam Donovan and 3rd doubles Payal Shah and Mallory Sander both scored 6-2 in both their sets. Congratulations to the team for a great season, and good luck at states.
-On Saturday the girls’ track and field team competed in the JI Invitational against 20 other teams. Congratulations to Erin Dunn, Izzy Erikson, Marlena Klein, Micaela Hanson, Kavitha Francis, Shannon Anthony, Sarah Karasik, and Tiana Barnes who all placed in the top 8 in their individual events. Erin Stephens, Missy Sullivan, Elizabeth Martinez, Anna Armstrong, and Lindsey Hurd also placed in the top 8 in relays. The next track meet will be the CCC Championships on Tuesday at Enfield.

-The girls’ tennis team won 7-0 yesterday against Manchester. Double bagels came from singles Varsha Rathore, and Sam Donovan, with great performances by Caitlin Sze and Ananya Srivatsav as well. Doubles Leah Polansky and Jia Yazon won with a bagel, Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon with a double bagel, and although Julie Harper and Payal Shah didn’t get to finish their match, they also displayed strong performance and skill. Yesterday the team celebrated senior day in honor of seniors Kelly Kozon, Julie Harper, Payal Shah, and Mallory Sander. After school today is the Zebra Cup, where student-teacher teams will face off; be sure to come watch the matches. All donations will benefit the American Heart Society.
-The boys’ tennis team brought home another victory winning against Manchester by a score of 5-2 which brings their record to 11 wins and 4 losses. This brings the team's overall record to 10 wins and 4 losses. As the season is winding down the team is looking forward to the Class L State Tournament. The next match is Wednesday in Manchester; wish the team good luck.

Students will be receiving their preliminary 2018-2019 class schedules today in homeroom. Students who have questions or concerns about their schedules should complete the Preliminary Schedule Change Form prior to meeting with their school counselor. No schedule changes for first or second semester will occur after the last day of school. All grade 10 and 11 students have one additional form to complete: Lock-IN OR Lock-OUT. Students may choose either Lock-IN or Lock-OUT; however you may not have both. Please read through the academic and behavioral standards for Lock-IN and Lock-OUT. The standards have changed from previous years and you need to understand the importance of Quarter 4 this year.

Congrats, gentlemen. With the victory over Berlin the team has officially qualified for the State Tournament. Next up for the Bobcats is Monday at home against East Hartford - come out and cheer for the team.
-The girls’ tennis team had a huge victory for the Bobcats last Friday against Berlin, winning 7-0. All four singles players, Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan had double bagels, and put forth great effort. First doubles Jia Yazon and Leah Polansky had a french fry, scoring 6-1 on both their sets. Second doubles Rebecca Kenefick and Kelly Kozon also had a double bagel, and third doubles Julie Harper and Payal Shah also won their match, putting forth strong effort. Their next match is today against East Hartford. Wish them luck.
-The boys’ volleyball hosted a tough Southington team Friday night. JV won a close game 3 to take the 2-1 win, while Varsity lost 3-0. The team will travel to play Bulkeley tonight. Good luck to the team and we hope to see you there.

Seniors who plan to attend college at any of the UConn campuses next fall can get a preview and jumpstart on their college career with the UConn First Summer program. If you have not already received information on this program, please see the Career Center for more information. Registration for the program closes in mid-June.

K-ROCKETS Engineering and Technology School, an Ellington-based company bringing STEM programs to school-aged youth, is seeking summer camp counselors and STEM instructors for a school year program. Six Flags New England will have a national day of hiring on Saturday, May 12, from 10:00am – 4:00pm at their Human Resources Office at 1756 Main Street in Agawam, Massachusetts. This is an important announcement regarding the JE Shepard Memorial Award given by the South Windsor Jaycees. Due to a lack of applications, the deadline for this scholarship has been extended until Friday, May 25. This scholarship offers $2,000 for a South Windsor High School student who has demonstrated initiative, spirit and integrity in serving his or her community. Applications can be picked up in the Career Center or the School Counseling Office. All completed applications MUST be returned to Mrs. Carty no later than May 25.

The Metropolitan University Tour will come to Harford on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00pm at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The program features research universities in 5 major cities, including SMU, Tulane, George Washington University, Northeastern and NYU. The Exploring College Options spring program will take place at sites throughout New England and NY during the week of May 20. Students interested in learning more about Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn or Stanford can choose from 5 program dates and locations that week. A flier with all options is hanging in the Career Center. Please note that this program usually takes place again in Farmington each fall, but families wanting to get information earlier may choose to drive to these regional locations now.
The Barbara Rosenthal Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for students from diverse and minority backgrounds to explore a career in law or a corporate environment. This 6 week paid internship runs from July 10 – August 16, requiring interns to work 20 hours in a Hartford law firm each week. Interested students with at least a 3.0 GPA can get an application from the Career Center. An essay, letters of recommendation and a transcript are required and are due by May 15.
Class Officer AND Student Council Elections are on Thursday, May 24. All those interested in running for Class Office or Student Council may pick up an application in the main office or Admin 237. All applications are due by Thursday, May 17.

Last call…if you are a senior attending the senior outing to Holiday Hill and need to take the early bus, you must print and return the Early Bus Form to Miss Griswold in Room 227 no later than May 16. The early bus will leave at 2:30pm from the outing. The Early Bus Form can be found on the Class of 2018 website and Google Classroom page.
The Spring Instrumental Concert will be Thursday, May 10 in the Auditorium. At 6:30pm, you can experience Video Games Live! with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. At 8:00pm, the Orchestras will play music from Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, The Beatles, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. Tickets are $5.00 per person. See you there.
Mind's Eye Magazine, South Windsor High School's literary and art magazine, is in the process of creating our 2017-2018 issue, and we'd love to see your work. We are looking for your stories, poems, creative essays, song lyrics, photographs of art, and any other original work that you've created and would like to be considered for the magazine. -The girls’ tennis team pulled in a win for the Bobcats yesterday against Enfield with a score of 7-0. The team did phenomenal, with all the singles and doubles winning both sets with sixes. Outstanding performances came from the entire lineup. Singles players, Caitlin Sze, Varsha Rathore, Sophia Chin, and Sam Donovan, and doubles Jia Yazon and Leah Polansky only lost one game overall, and continue to pull off skillful wins. Doubles Kelly Kozon and Rebecca Kenefick did a great job, winning their first set 6-2 and second set 6-1. Payal Shah and Nikitha Kikanamada won their first set 6-2 and second set 6-0, doing an amazing job. Their next match is on Friday at Berlin with the boys’ tennis team. Wish them luck.
-The boys’ tennis team defeated Enfield/Somers by a score of 7-0. It was a dominant performance and the following players came away with wins: Singles Players: Femi Orisamolu, Jason Richenbacher, Neal Shah and Abhiram Gunti; Doubles Teams: Elijah Wood & Jack Perry and Andris Reba & Wayne Huang. Enfield/Somers defaulted 3rd doubles. And thanks to Ishaan Reddy for volunteering without hesitation to play a special game. His great sportsmanship was really appreciated by the Enfield/Somers coach.
-The boys’ volleyball team had a clean sweep over Bloomfield at home last night with JV winning 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. The team will be home again tomorrow, Friday, May 11 vs. Southington. Please note that the JV start time for that match is 5:00pm with Varsity to follow at approximately 6:00pm. Hope you'll come out and support your fellow Bobcats.
