CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

South Windsor for the Local Kids is hosting their Annual Dance Marathon on Friday, February 24th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Don’t forget to buy a shirt via the google form on our classroom or on your graduating class classroom. Your shirt serves as your ticket, so buy now! More details are in the Google form.

FBLA invites you to its annual 3 v 3 basketball tournament on March 17th at 2:25 p.m. in the Gym. The cost is $30 per team, with proceeds going to Make a Wish Foundation. Sign up during lunch waves or in Room 225 from February 27 - March 15th

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

The Connecticut State Board of Education has issued a “notice to Grade 11 students” announcing the application process for students interested in serving on the State Board of Education for the 2023-2024 school year. Each school year, the Board includes two Senior students from throughout the state of Connecticut. Students wishing to apply can pick up an application packet from the Career Center or download one at this link: https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/SDE/Board/SBE-Student-Application-2023-2024.pdf. The application deadline is February 24th.

ATHLETICS:  

Spring sports registration is now open in Powerschool. If you plan on playing a Spring sport, be advised that all registration material is due by March 9th.  The 3 items you must submit are (1)- Powerschool online registration, (2) Payment of $125 in the form of cash, check or online using www.myschoolbucks.com, and (3) A current Physician Statement dated AFTER  June 1, 2022. Please note that if you submitted a physician statement for a previous sport in the 22-23 school year, you do not need to resubmit one.  Your registration is INCOMPLETE until all 3 of these items are submitted to the main office. Registration deadline is March 9th. Registrations submitted after March 9th are not guaranteed to be processed in time for tryouts. Contact the main office with any questions. All these info and the forms can also be also accessed from our website's Athletics section under Athletics Registration tab.

Anyone interested in trying out for South Windsor High School's Boys Varsity Golf Team this spring should attend the mandatory meeting on Thursday, February 23rd, after school from 2:10 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room 168. Please see Mr. Gray in Room 168 for any additional information.

Are you interested in tutoring students from around the U.S. and gaining volunteer hours? Join Learn to Be, a non-profit organization with the goal of giving every student the education they deserve. With Learn to Be, you'll virtually tutor students and create your own tutoring schedule. The classroom code is uigluvw and our first meeting is February 13th in Room 223. If you have any questions contact Mrs. Powell in Room 223, Ria Shah or Krystal Le.

The Strategy Club is back and will resume bi-weekly meetings starting today.  Join us in the back of the Media Center this afternoon for board games and D&D.

UUG is having a fundraiser to support our pen pals! Purchase cute jewelry and accessories for you and your friends on Leah Cunha's website and a portion of the proceeds will go to support our pen pals in Kenya! This fundraiser is from now until the end of the month, so make sure to purchase something from Leah Cunha before it's too late!

ATHLETICS:  

The Storm Girls High School Ice Hockey Team will be holding their Senior night recognition game on Monday 2/13 at Newington Ice Arena.  Seniors will be honored at 4:45 p.m., followed by a game against Northwest Catholic/Mercy High Schools. Please come and cheer Senior #27 Jessica Pollack, and the other South Windsor High School girls: Ella Parlapiano, Lily Ficaro and Charlie Laramee!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

The Science Olympiad Team attended the 10th anniversary Yale Invitational and demonstrated their scientific prowess yet again.  They took home medals in 14 events and competed against state champion teams from Florida, Virginia, Massachusetts and Washington state. 
Aditi Malpure with Smirti Rajan and Mehana Magarur and Ava Mathew earned 5th and 6th place respectively in Cell Biology. 
6th place was earned by Cole Murphy and Sophia Wong in the It's About Time event.
Arnav Thakrar and Dan Stoyanov earned 5th place in Detector building.
Maher Mawla, Sophia Wong and Arnav Thakrar earned 5th place in Codebusters.
Kate Luci earned 3rd for her Bridge design and 4th in Rocks and Minerals test. 
3rd in flight and 4th in forestry were Rithanya Manjunath and Ansh Gehtiya.
Yunfei Zheng and Aarush Agarwal earned 3rd place for Fermi questions. 
Dan Stoyanov with Maher Mawla and Pragyan Yadav with Yunfei Zheng earned 2nd and 3rd respectively in WiFi lab.
A 1st place was won by Sophia Wong and Parthiv Malipeddu for their 1:54 min flight. 
Congratulations to all! The success of this day provides motivation as the team progresses toward the State Tournament on March 11th.

Student Council is hosting a Canned Food Drive during the JV and Varsity girls basketball games on Monday, 2/6. Unified Theater’s first informational meeting is on Tuesday, February 7th,  after school from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room 144. Come to learn more about our inclusive, fun-filled, theater based group! 

Interested in STEM? Have strong writing skills? Want to stand out to college admission committees? The Medical and Scientific Research Club is right for you! Gain knowledge on a niche topic in medicine or science, improve your scientific writing skills, and get accepted for publication! Our experienced mentors will guide you along the journey of writing original research or a literary review to get accepted for publication. Additionally, you’ll be given a chance to network with professionals in the fields of your choice. Google Classroom code: 5ullbb4. Our next in-person meeting is on Monday, February 6th after school from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room 209. Please come prepared with a research topic or a job shadowing interest and an idea on how to pursue it. If you plan to write a research paper and are able to start drafting it, that is great. If you are already in the works of writing a research paper, please feel free to stop by and workshop your writing. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The Teen Center is open across the street inside the Community Center. High school students can join us after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Teen Center offers a safe, comfortable space for students to relax with our staff and friends, play games, do crafts and enjoy snacks. Stop by to meet our staff and check out the space!

Family, Career, Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a nationally recognized organization that provides leadership, scholarships, and more! With competitions ranging from professional presentation and cake decorating to sports nutrition and fashion design, FCCLA has something for everyone. Come to our next meeting on Friday, February 3rd at Wapping Room 11 at 2 p.m. to learn more! Snacks will be provided and there are multiple leadership opportunities available.

The New England Air Museum is looking for applicants for both its Simulator Staff and Education Department. Postings for the jobs are on the bulletin board in the Career Center with details on expected tasks, pay rate, schedule and how to apply. These are great opportunities for students interested in anything related to science, aerospace, flight, or education. Students who are 16 and over and interested are encouraged to come get the information.

Attention Seniors who speak a language at home - If you are interested in testing for the Seal of Biliteracy, email Mrs. Stoj by Friday, February 3rd, with your name and the language you want to test in. Testing will be held after early release on Monday, February 27th.

February is Black History Month: Today, Feb 1st, marks the first day of Black History Month. Black History Month offers an important opportunity to honor and highlight the accomplishments of Black Americans in history and society, as we continue the study of Black History as American History throughout the year. This event was first celebrated as a week in February of 1926 and the week was expanded to a month in 1976. More background can be found here: https://blackhistorymonth.gov/

A Reminder to all Seniors looking for scholarships – the next deadline for scholarships from Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is Thursday, February 2nd. While there are many scholarships available through HFPG, two scholarships given specifically to South Windsor High School seniors are included in this wave and are worth your attention. The Julie Veilleux Memorial Scholarship is given to a South Windsor High School Senior girl who has demonstrated significant leadership or academic achievement, and the Joyce S. Picard Scholarship is given to South Windsor students who are pursuing degrees in science, medical, nursing or health-related fields. All of these can be found in Naviance.
