SCHOOL NEWS:

To all Spanish AP, 5 and 4 students:
We have a field trip scheduled for May 18th to NYC to watch a Spanish play titled La Gringa, Central Park and to the MET museum. Please join Google Classroom with code euuxv3m for more information. The cost of $100 includes transportation, play, and museum. It does not include money for food. A deposit of 50% is needed by December 16, second payment by January 20. CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:
 
Interested in STEM? The Medical and Scientific Research Club may be right for you! Gain knowledge on a niche topic in medicine or science, improve your scientific writing skills, and get accepted for publication! Our experienced mentors will guide you along the journey of writing either original research or a literary review to get accepted for publication. You’ll be given a chance to network with professionals in the fields of your choice, whether it be well-accomplished scientists or local healthcare workers. Google Classroom code: 5ullbb4. Our next in-person meeting is on Monday, December 19th after school from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room 209. Please come prepared with a research topic or a job shadowing interest and an idea on how to pursue it. If you plan to write a research paper and are able to start drafting it, that is great. If you are already in the works of writing a research paper, please feel free to stop by and workshop your writing.  
                                                           
The long-awaited first meeting of the Art Club will be this Wednesday, December 14th after school in Room 7 until 3:00 p.m. We will spend time working on projects and getting to know each other! The Google Classroom code for Art Club is hshluc4. 
 
The Strategy Club will meet this week on Wednesday after school in the Media Center Classroom, this is a change from our usual meeting location.
 
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 

College Planning Partnerships will offer an SAT Prep course for High School Juniors starting in January. The course will be taught via an on-line platform on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule from mid-January until mid-March. There are both afternoon and evening sessions available. The discounted cost of the course is $499 using code SWHS2023.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

SWFLC’s annual volleyball marathon is on January 20th.  Sign up forms are available this week during lunch waves and on our Google Classroom. Money and sign up forms must be submitted during lunch waves by December 21.
                                                                                             
Calling all writers: Mind's Eye is still accepting submissions for its poetry contest. Your poem can be about anything and the selected poet will win a prize and be featured in this year's magazine. You may submit to your English teacher, a member of Mind's Eye, or Ms. Flachsbart in Room 129.

The Teen Center Youth Council volunteer group is hosting a Holiday Toy Drive to support those in need this holiday season. Please consider donating an unwrapped toy to support a neighbor in need, Monday, December 12th through Thursday, December 15th between 4-6pm at the Community Center.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 

Attention 11th grade male students who are interested in a last minute opportunity to apply to the United States Senate Page Program for Spring 2023! The School Counseling office has just received notice of a last-minute opportunity for one 11th grade male student to be selected to serve as a page to Senator Chris Murphy from mid-January to mid-June in Washington, DC. Interested candidates MUST apply by Friday, December 16th by 8 pm, but earlier application is strongly encouraged. Candidates must be 16 or 17 years of age during their time as a page, be a United States citizen and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. For information on other criteria, and to learn more about the program and how to apply to it, please see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center as soon as possible.

We will be holding the final meeting for the Quebec Trip on Tuesday, December 13. It will begin at 6 p.m. in the HS Media Center. We will be talking about the trip checklist, complete forms that need to be filled out and what to bring.  If you have any questions please email me at [email protected]

As a reminder, the Teen Center is open for High School students on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Students are welcome to walk across the street to play pool, air-hockey, watch movies, play games, and have some snacks!

The Class of 2026 will host a fundraiser at a local sandwich shop at The Plaza at Buckland Hills today, December 8th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Use a coupon and the Class of 2026 will receive 10% of proceeds from all sales. Coupons for Buy one Get one free regular subs, $2 off a giant sub, and free chips and a drink are also available on the Class of 2026 Google Classroom page.  We will have a special Spirit Night on December 8th where you can win a catering box valued at $80.

The Quebec field trip February 2023 last meeting with parents will be held in the Media Center on Tuesday December 13th, 2022 at 6:00pm. The trip checklist will be discussed. Please contact Mr. Ly (Lee) in Room 227 with questions. 
 
Friday, December 9th is PJ Day to support children at Connecticut Children’s hospital who wear their PJs for long periods of time while enduring treatment. If you would like to participate in this event, please feel free to wear PJs OR a flannel to school that day, and donate $1 or more towards this statewide initiative. Donations can be made during lunch waves with members of the Interact Club or in the Main Office with Mrs. Schworm.

 - Grain-free canned and dry dog food
 - Pet waste bags (poop bags)
 - Paper towel rolls
 - Scott single-ply toilet paper
 - Unscented dryer sheets
 - Dishwasher detergent
 - Clorox disinfectant wipes
 - Windex with vinegar
 - Tall kitchen trash bags (13-gallon)

South Windsor High School will be administering the ASVAB CEP again this year.  The test will be held on Wednesday, December 14th at 8:00 a.m. in the Seminar Room at SWHS.  Whether you’re planning to go to college, a vocational school, or the Military, or you’re just not sure what you want to do yet, the ASVAB CEP can provide you with important information about your skills and interests -- and help get you on the right path toward a satisfying career. There are a limited number of seats available, so seats will be first come, first serve. The test is open to all students in grades 10-12. If you would like to take the ASVAB CEP please email Mr. Briggs at [email protected] or stop by the School Counseling Office.
