SCHOOL NEWS:

Day of Silence, 2022 is tomorrow, April 8th. During this school day, student participants take a vow of silence for the entire school day in protest of bullying and discrimination toward the LGBTQ+ community. If you would like to participate, please see Mrs. Stodd Knapp in room 148 for information and sign-up by Wednesday, April 6th.
SAGA will also be selling bracelets and pins for $1 during lunch waves; please consider purchasing one to show your solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community if you are not able to actively participate. Staff and students can also show their support by wearing black on April 8th.
 
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

The Interact Club is selling beaded bracelets during all lunch waves from April 4th-8th to benefit SWHS Got Talent.

ATTENTION 9TH-10TH GRADERS: If you are interested in learning about membership to the National Honor Society, please come to a meeting today, April 6th, after school in the cafeteria.
 
Day of Silence, 2022 is coming up on Friday, April 8th. SWHS had a great showing at the FBLA Spring Leadership Conference Competition.  Congratulations to our winning Bobcats:  Paul Chen, Michael Pancras, Rohan Pruthi, Pranav Ramesh, Saisaketh Koppu, Trinayaan Hariharan, Abhinay Prabhuraj, Joseph Biju, Kavin Shanmugam, Aarnav Alsi, and Sidharth Atluri. In addition, Kavin Shanmugam, Saisaketh Koppu and Joseph Biju were elected to positions at the Connecticut FBLA level. 
 
We’ve got the perfect excuse to not cook dinner this week! Unified for Underprivileged Girls is having a fundraiser event on Saturday, April 9th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at a local bakery on Hemlock Ave. All proceeds will be donated to underprivileged girls in Kenya.
 
Interact Club is selling lemonade in the lobby before and after school from April 4th-April 8th. Proceeds will go to theater management and security officers for SWHS Got Talent Show.  

French club “Le Lynx” will meet April 7th right after school until the late bus in room 105. We will be making Madeleine, Quiche and Lemonade. Space is limited so see Mr. Ly or Mr. Mabasa in room 230 to reserve your spot.

ATHLETICS:
 
Do you have gently used sporting equipment that you no longer need?  Equipment Assist is a local program run by 3 high school sophomores who are collecting items to donate to the Hartford Police Athletic League (PAL), which benefits underserved youth.  From now through April 24th, we are collecting all types of gently used sports equipment including cleats, sneakers, ice and hockey skates, baseball gloves, balls, helmets, shin guards, etc.  All sizes are acceptable.  A bin is located between the two showcases in the main lobby.  We can also arrange to pick up bigger items such as nets, hockey sticks, baseball bats and lacrosse sticks.  If you have questions, or to schedule a pick up, please email [email protected]

Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for a convincing opening scrimmage victory over Ellington on 3/31. 11 of 12 matches were won! First home match is next Friday against Avon. Come see us - these guys can play!

Beginning on Monday, the Hall of Achievement will be closed during lunch for the remainder of the school year. The patio outside the lunch room will be open for all students. The stadium will be open to only Seniors. Both outside areas will be open on nice weather days. Students eating outside will be expected to keep the areas clean. We would ask all students who are outside to be respectful of any classes who are on the field during PE classes.

World Malayalee Council CT will be hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive in association with the SWHS Hope Club students tomorrow - Saturday April 2nd between 8:00am and 1:00pm in the Cafeteria.

SWHS Got Talent is hosting auditions on Thursday, April 21 after school in the auditorium for a school wide talent show. Any act is welcome. Sign up on the Google Form using the Google Classroom code cek6ciy. Fill out the form by March 31 to audition! If you have questions, please see Mrs. Howard in room 134.

Weekly Tip from the Writing Center: When writing, make sure that you are in a quiet place where you can focus. You’ll be better able to express yourself! For more writing tips and help with your writing assignments, stop by the Writing Center. We are open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2-3 in room 136. Get one on one help with your writing assignments.  No appointment needed!

Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event celebrating transgender people and raising awareness for discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society. Show your support for the transgender community by wearing pink, white, and blue this Thursday 3/31. Feel free to join SAGA's meeting after school on the 31st in room 148 at 2pm for our regular meeting, and in celebration of our community.  Please see Mrs. Stodd Knapp or Ms. Flachsbart with any questions.

The Water Launch Club, an organization that strives to provide clean, drinkable water for villages in Africa, is hosting its first fundraising campaign at a Sandwich Shop at 1006 Sullivan Avenue in South Windsor on Wednesday, March 30th from 4:30-7:30 pm.  Come support this worthy cause. No flyer is necessary.
 
The Hunger Helper Committee is hosting a food drive for the SW Food & Fuel Bank from April 4th-8th. There will be a drop off box outside the main office for your donations.

SCHOOL NEWS:

Congratulations to Sivani Arvapalli, Aditi Malpure, Mehana Nagarur, Anamitra Rawat, and Ria Shah, all of whom received the Connecticut NCWIT Aspirations in Computing (AiC) award. This award recognizes 9th-12th grade women, genderqueer, and non-binary students for their computing-related achievements and interests, as part of an effort to encourage a diverse range of students to choose careers in technology.
Sivani, Aditi, Mehana, Anamitra, and Ria were selected from more than 3,500 applicants from all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, U.S. overseas military bases, and Canada for their outstanding aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education. For more information on how to apply for the award in the future, see Mrs. Lang in room 9.

Voice 4 Change: On March 28th, during homeroom, students will have the opportunity to vote for an idea that was proposed by their peers as part of Civics classes and a statewide project called Voice 4 Change. “Voice4Change will allow students to suggest how $20,000 of the ARP ESSER state set-aside money will be spent in their school. Seventy-six Connecticut high schools representing more than 55,000 students are participating in this exciting opportunity.” Read more about the state project here- Voice4Change. Your vote will determine how the money will be spent. Read more about the students’ ideas and proposals here in order to make an informed decision and vote next Monday. 

Weekly writing tip from the Writing Center: Do you know the difference between an active and passive voice? If not, come down to the Writing Center and learn from one of our amazing tutors! For more writing tips and help with your writing assignments, stop by the Writing Center. We are open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2-3 in room 136. COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology and MCC will host a manufacturing career expo on Friday, March 25th from 9 – noon at the CCAT Advanced Technology Center in East Hartford. Visit the Career Center for complete details. There is a flyer hanging on the Programs & Events board.

There is a brand new daycare opening up in South Windsor, and they are looking to hire Childcare Assistants for after school help. Please visit the Career Center for the flyer with details and information on how to apply.
