Today for Black History Month, we recognize Marley Dias. Marley Dias, is a young changemaker who as a sixth-grader founded #1000BlackGirlBooks. Her campaign, #1000BlackGirlBooks, had a goal of collecting and donating children's books that feature Black girls as the lead characters. Dias said, “Each of us has a magic inside of us that we can use to make the world a better place.”

She was the first African American to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, and her Easter Sunday concert in 1939, before 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial, was hailed as a defining moment in the history of civil rights in the United States.

Today for Black History Month, we recognize STEM pioneer Gladys West. West, a US Navy mathematician, pioneered the Global Positioning System. Her mathematical and computer calculations helped create the earlier military version of what we know as GPS, which is now part of our everyday lives. Gladys West was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2018.

South Windsor For The Kids is selling 2021 SWFTK t-shirts to raise money for the Huskython - which is a dance marathon to benefit CCMC. Seniors who are still working on their FAFSA - In collaboration with the Connecticut College Bound initiative, UConn invites Connecticut students who have not yet filed the 2021-22 FAFSA to register for one of the upcoming virtual filing workshops. All workshops are free of charge and are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on February 2nd, 3rd, and 7th. Registration is limited to 100 students per session. Once registered, students will receive a checklist of documents and materials to gather for use during the workshop. The Hartford Electricians Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee is offering an apprentice application period until February 5th. Interested individuals can go to their office at 208 Murphy Road in Hartford from Monday to Friday. Applicants must be at least 17 years old and have graduated, will graduate in June, or have a GED. For additional details, come to the Career Center.
