SCHOOL NEWS:

 

Congratulations to Mr. Mabasa’s Bobcat Block for winning SWHS Clubs and Activities Scavenger Hunt. Details of your victory breakfast will be forthcoming.

 

The Academic Resource Center (the former Academic Support Club) is now open! If you need help with homework or with studying for a test, please join! We meet every Monday to Thursday from 2 to 3:30 in AN12. A snack and water will be provided. NHS tutors are available to help each day. Please note that there are no late buses on Tuesdays. See Mrs. Barrett with questions!

 

Support the Class of 2026 with a sweet treat at a local frozen yogurt shop located at 1500 Pleasant Valley Road on Wednesday, September 18th from 5pm-8pm. 20% of proceeds will go to the Class of 2026 when you mention us at checkout.

 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

 

The National Honor Society will hold its first meeting Wednesday, September 18th after school in the Cafeteria.

 

Interact Club will meet on September 26th from 2:10 until 2:40 in the Library Media Center. We will go over information about the club and volunteer opportunities for the year. 

 

The first Student Council Meeting will be held in the back of the MEDIA CENTER from 2:15-3 pm on 9/19. Please come ready to discuss ideas about Homecoming Spirit Week & the Pep Rally! 

 

Join the Unified for Underprivileged Girls club after school in Room 256 on September 19th for the first club meeting of the year. The FIRST Japanese Club meeting is Thursday, September 19th at 2:10pm in Room 230.

We will discuss club activities, choose club leadership positions, learn Japanese and watch a Japanese anime movie and traditional Japanese food  will be provided.

BSA is a safe space for students to share their school and cultural experiences, and discuss current events. The first meeting of the Math Team will take place on Friday, September 20, at 2:10pm in Room 265. If you enjoy solving challenging math problems without a calculator, this is the team for you! COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

 

Career Center visits for the rest of this week include the Connecticut Army National Guard, Endicott College, Western New England University, University of Connecticut, and Plymouth State University. Please sign up in Naviance so that we know there are interested students and do not cancel the visit.

                                                                                                          

Students in grades 10 or 11 who are interested in learning more about Bristol Technical Education Center as an option for career-based learning are invited to attend an Open House on Thursday, October 3rd at their campus. A flier with more details, including the event time and address is hanging in the Career Center on the Special Programs board. Grade 12 students wanting to learn about careers in the aircraft management industry should attend Connecticut AeroTech’s Open House at their Brainerd Road campus on Saturday, October 5th. A flier for this program can also be found in the Career Center.

                                                                               

Do You Love to Swim? I.O.H. (Instructors of the Handicapped), a swim program for disabled adults and children, is looking for High School volunteer instructors. Attention all freshman and returning Bobcats!  Are you looking to join a club and help out your community to gain volunteer hours? The Interact club is the best place to be! Interact will be having their first club meeting on September 26th at 2:10 until 2:40 in the library media center. They will be going over information about the club and volunteer opportunities for the year. Make sure to bring a friend and tell everyone you know! 

 

ATHLETICS:

 

Girls swim team won their season opener against Manchester 97 to 81, taking first place in 10 out of the 14 events. First place individual swimmers were Alyssa Nyugen, Audrey Zhang, Celine Nyugen, and Grace Zeng. Finishing first and second were Anna Fetzko and Molly Grohs in diving.

It is a time to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions, diverse cultures, and histories of Latinx and Hispanic communities. The library media center has a large collection of books about Latinx and Hispanic teen experiences. Check out our amazing books in the library today!

Evergreen Crossings, a local retirement community, is looking for part-time servers on evenings and weekends. Please see a flier posted on the jobs board in the Career Center for details.

 

College Visits start on Monday, September 16th. Gettysburg College, American International College, Nova Southeastern University, Syracuse University and the University of New Haven will meet with interested students in the first couple of days. Continue to check Naviance and register for college visits as they schedule their appointments.

 

ATHLETICS:

 

The South Windsor Boys Tennis Team is hosting its fourth annual charity tennis tournament on Saturday September 14th and Sunday September 15th. Players of all skill levels are welcome!  All proceeds will be going to the Hartford Bags of Love charity. For details on registering, please see Mr. Tyler in Room 200.

                                                                                                            

Game time for Varsity Football at Bristol Central this Friday Sept. 13th is 7 pm. Visiting fans should enter via the lower gate. The gate at the top of the stairs is only for Bristol Central students who must scan their ID’s in order to enter.  No spectators are allowed on the track or on the hill. Traffic around the school is one way. Vehicles should turn left after entering school grounds and drive around the school to find parking.  There is no parking on the street.  Exit is one way down the hill onto Crown Street. Admission is cash only at the gate. No online advance purchase is required. Admission is $3.00 for South Windsor students with ID and $5 for adults.

The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club is getting ready for another great year of prevention, programs and outreach. If you are interested in getting involved with planning activities that highlight making good choices, then consider joining the SADD Club. More info about our 1st meeting will be posted soon, but if you are interested in learning about the club join the 24-25 Classroom with code: ajzqpsw  

 

The SADD Club would like to invite any Juniors or Seniors, who have been ACTIVE participants in the club for at least the last 2 years, to attend an informational meeting about current leadership opportunities. We will meet in the main HS LOBBY on Thursday, September 12th. Choose the time that works best for your schedule. Attend one meeting from either 12:45-1pm OR from 2:15 - 2:30pm. 

 

The Outing Club is excited to announce that our first hike will be held on Sunday, October 6th. We will be hiking in Giuffrida Park in Meriden. If you would like to join us please pick up a permission slip from Ms. Andrews (Rm 264) or Mrs. Lynch (Rm 254). Both permission slips and payments are due by September 25th. SCHOOL NEWS:

 

Today marks the anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001.  Each year, we take a moment to pause and remember the tragic events of that day which resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives. We also take a moment to recognize the members of emergency response personnel who risked, and in some cases, lost their lives to protect, support, and care for others during and as a result of these events.

                                                                                                                                                              The Teen Center will be open for High School students beginning Wednesday, September 11th, Join us at the Teen Center for snacks, games, and to chill with friends after school. We are open until 4:30pm or late bus pick up.

A local supply company is looking to hire a student for clerical work such as data entry, document scanning and answering phones. Hours are flexible and the position starts at minimum wage with the opportunity to revisit after 90 days. See the notice on the Part-Time jobs board in the Career Center. 

 

The New England Association of College Admissions Counselors will hold its Fall College Fair on Sunday, September 15th from 12-2 PM at Western New England University in Springfield, MA. For details and a list of the over 100 colleges attending, go to www.neacac.org and visit the College Fairs tab.

Attention Seniors! Kickoff senior year with the traditional Senior Rock Signing! The Senior Rock Signing will take place on Friday, 9/6 during Period 6 lunch waves. On your way to the event, please exit through the Hall of Achievement and come to the Senior Rock to sign both the rock and the senior canvas. Celebrate all you have done the past three years with your fellow classmates by participating in this SW tradition!

SCHOOL NEWS:

                                                                                                                         

Please be reminded that only students with a SWHS parking permit for the 2024-2025 school year can be parked in the SWHS or SWHS Annex parking lots. The permit MUST be affixed to the windshield of the vehicle parked on campus. If you do not have a permit you can park at Upper Duprey or Lower Duprey at no cost to you.

 

Attention Seniors! Kickoff senior year with the traditional Senior Rock Signing! The Senior Rock Signing will take place on Friday, 9/6 during Period 6 lunch waves. On your way to the event, please exit through the Hall of Achievement and come to the Senior Rock to sign both the rock and the senior canvas. Celebrate all you have done the past three years with your fellow classmates by participating in this SW tradition!

 

Attention 11th & 12th Graders: Got a GPA of 3.75 or higher?

Check your mailbox for a letter about your eligibility for the National Honor Society. 

There will be a mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday, October 4th!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

                                                                                                                         

The Science Olympiad team is hosting an informational meeting on Thursday, September 5th, after school in Room 210. Anyone interested in STEM and competing in the Science Olympiad should attend this meeting. Please join Science Olympiad's Google Classroom with classroom code: nk3glcm.

 

Educators Rising is a new club for all students who are interested in pursuing a career in Education. The club is not just for future teachers. It is also intended for all students who would like to pursue a career in School Social Work, School Psychology, Guidance Counselor, Coaching, Library/Media Specialist, Special Education, a Paraeducator and many more.

There will be plenty of activities planned throughout the year as well as preparation for both State and National competitions! 

The 2025 National Competition is in Orlando, Florida!  You will also have the opportunity to volunteer after school in classrooms around the district with transportation provided.

Mrs. Doherty - the club advisor - will meet with club members once per week every Thursday after school from 2-3pm in the Child Development room in the Annex building.

All students in grades 9-12 who are interested in becoming future educators are invited.

ATHLETICS:

 

Dance team tryouts are coming up. Join the coach for a preseason meeting September 10th 2:30-3:30 in the Rubber Room to learn more about the team.

The girls swim team is looking for one to two responsible managers for the Fall season starting as soon as possible. Please see Mrs. McCullough in Room 127 by next Wed. 9/11 for details if interested.
