SCHOOL NEWS:
The annual South Windsor Patriotic Commission Essay contest is underway. For students in grades 9 – 12 this year’s theme is “What it means to be an American.” Completed essays should be 500 words or less and submitted by Friday, March 7th. All submissions should be made on the South Windsor Patriotic Commission’s website—please visit the site for more details.
Attention seniors: the first round of in-person collections for Senior Dues is this week. We will be collecting dues on Wednesday, February 5th, during all 6th period lunch waves in the Cafeteria, and on Thursday, February 6th from 12:50-2:30 in the Main Lobby. Please see the Class of 2025 Google Classroom page for more information or see Ms. Andrews or Mrs. Farrell with questions.

This year’s volleyball marathon by South Windsor for the Local Kids is Friday, February 7th. Sign up forms are in the cafeteria, cost is $12 per person this week and $15 per person next week. All proceeds go to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
The Strategy Club will meet on Monday, February 3rd from 2:00-4:00 after school in Room 149A.

Your opportunity to audition for the award-winning show choir Choral Spectrum is here! Auditions will take place on February 20 at 6 PM in the Auditorium. To audition, you need to attend the in-person audition and also complete an online vocal audition—both are required. All audition materials and details can be accessed using class code: qeotvrl. Choral Spectrum is an honors-level class that counts toward your arts credit for graduation while giving you the opportunity to perform at an elite level. COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:
For students interested in health related careers, this is a reminder that there are TWO upcoming programs that will help you learn how to prepare for them. On February 12th, the CT Area Health Education Center will have Public Health Ambassadors here to talk about careers in health and technology. And on March 7th, the UConn School of Nursing will present to interested students about their Early Intro to Nursing program. Students can sign up for both of these programs in Naviance.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Scholarship program ends on February 4th, and the South Windsor Dollars for Scholars portal officially opened on January 21st. If you want help understanding how to look for scholarships and more importantly how to ACCURATELY complete your Dollars for Scholars application, please come to the next Workshop Wednesday, after school THIS WEDNESDAY, January 29th, in the Seminar Room. You must let Mrs. Carty know you plan to attend. Bring your Chromebook and make some progress on trying to fund your college education!
Last call to attend the CT State Judicial Branch virtual job shadow program on Monday, February 3rd. Interested students in grades 10-12 should speak to Mrs. Carty before this Friday (1/31) to get details and secure a spot.

The program will take place on Monday, February 3rd from 12:30-2:00 PM. Students who register to attend can come to the Career Center with their Chromebooks and headphones to log in to the session. Please let Mrs. Carty know if you would like to attend by the end of school on Friday, January 31st in order or receive the log in access.
The CT Science Center, in partnership with the CT Center for Advanced Technology, will host a PATHWAYS TO STEM – CAREERS IN MANUFACTURING program on Thursday, February 6 from 5-8 PM. The free event allows students to explore STEM careers, meet employers, listen to an inspiring panel of rising professionals, try STEM challenges, and explore the Science Center’s galleries while networking with experts. To register, visit the Career Center and scan the QR code on the posted flyer.

Anyone interested in trying out for South Windsor High School’s Boys Varsity Golf Team should attend the mandatory meeting Tuesday, February 18th, after school (2:10-2:30) in Room 168. Please see Mr. Gray in Room 168 in the event you can not attend this meeting.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:
Hartford Hospital’s Summer VolunTEEN program will hold a mandatory information session for students interested in applying to the program. To attend the meeting, students must register in advance starting on January 25th at 9 AM. Space is limited and this is the only way to receive an application to this competitive opportunity, so register early. Additional details and a link to the VolunTEEN website will be provided in the next issue of the School Counseling and Career Center newsletter.
Seniors – the next Career Center Workshop Wednesday will take place on January 29th after school. It will feature a brief overview of scholarships and how to find them in Naviance, but mostly focus on how to accurately complete your Dollars for Scholars application to avoid common mistakes. Please sign up to attend so that a proper space can be reserved. You can either e-mail Mrs. Carty or stop into the Career Center and register in person.

In order to receive a late bus pass from the Teen Center, you MUST arrive before 2:30 and stay at the Teen Center until the late bus arrives here. There will no longer be exceptions to this rule. There is a Youth Council meeting on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 5pm-6pm. Join our Youth Council to make your dreams a reality.
