The National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) is hosting a series of virtual college fairs for juniors and seniors. These will be held on numerous dates throughout the winter and spring. The first fair will be held this Sunday, January 31st. Students are encouraged to register in advance. A complete list of dates and registration details can be found at www.nacacfairs.org

On Monday, February 1st from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the high school will be open for material pick up for distance learning students. Distance Learning students taking semester classes may need to pick up textbooks and other materials for Semester 2 classes, and may drop off textbooks from Semester 1 classes. Additionally, if you have not picked up your Student ID those will be available as well. Material pick up will be in the lobby - please wear a mask and observe social distancing at all times. The snow date for this event is Wednesday, February 3rd.

The Hartford Electricians Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee is offering an apprentice application period until February 5th. Interested individuals can go to their office at 208 Murphy Road in Hartford from Monday to Friday. Applicants must be at least 17 years old and have graduated, will graduate in June, or have a GED. For additional details, come to the Career Center.
 
AP Students: Reminder, please make your exam payments as soon as possible. Refer to the letter sent home earlier this month for directions on how to pay on-line or by check. Speak to your School Counselor if you have any questions.

In Honor of Black History Month, the SWPS Equity Council presents: Calvin Terrell on Tuesday, February 2nd at 6:00 p.m. The program is entitled “Black to the Future, a Path of Perseverance” which there will be a discussion related to fluent language around race, racial intersections with all identities, implicit bias, white dominances, and community building. The zoom link can be found on the website. This is a community event – all are welcome!

Seniors: Are you looking to wrap up your Capstone Project soon? New this year, we are offering rolling Capstone presentations every Thursday and Friday throughout the month of February. In order for you to present, you must have turned in all written work to your adviser and have received a successful on all written work. Your adviser will then reach out to the Capstone coordinators to schedule a rolling presentation. You will be notified of your presentation date, time and Google Meet link via your school email. If you have any questions please contact your adviser. 

Seniors: If you are still trying to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you can get help at a FAFSA completion workshop offered by CONNTAC on February 7th from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in Hartford. NHS is helping collect various items to benefit Camp Kesem, a national network that provides free, week-long summer camps for children impacted by a parent’s cancer. We are collecting arts and crafts supplies, office supplies, and toys. Please see the flyer for details, as they are looking for specific items! Items can be placed in the box in the hallway outside the cafeteria until Friday, January 29th.

Juniors: College Planning Partnerships is offering this year's SAT prep class live and online. You can sign up for the 8-week, 20-hour course by going to www.satprepct.com/courses. Make sure to sign up soon to ensure you get the days and times that best suit your schedule. The course normally costs $695, but South Windsor High School juniors can enter the special code SWHS2021 at checkout to receive a $245 discount, reducing the cost to $450.

High School students are asked to write an essay on “What it means to me to be an American” in 500 words or less. All entries must be received by the Patriotic Commission no later than Monday, March 1. Winners will receive a gift card - first place will receive $100.00, second place $50 and third place $25. Please see your Social Studies teacher or Mrs. Slogesky for the contest flyer.

NHS is helping collect various items to benefit Camp Kesem, a national network that provides free, week-long summer camps for children impacted by a parent’s cancer. We are collecting arts and crafts supplies, office supplies, and toys. Please see the flyer for details, as they are looking for specific items! Items can be placed in the box in the hallway outside the cafeteria until Jan. 29th.

Schools are closed Monday, January 18th in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday is recognized annually on the third Monday in January, which is near Dr. King’s birthday, January 15th. Dr. King was a key voice of the American civil rights movement, which worked for equal rights for all. He was famous for using nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice and to end segregation laws. In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts and achievements, the youngest person ever to receive this high honor. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an opportunity to remember and honor Dr. King and his legacy.

The South Windsor Patriotic Commission has announced their annual essay contest for students of South Windsor. High School students are asked to write an essay on “What it means to me to be an American” in 500 words or less. All entries must be received by the Patriotic Commission no later than Monday, March 1. Winners will receive a gift card - first place will receive $100.00, second place $50 and third place $25.
