SCHOOL NEWS:

November 1st marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month. The month is an opportunity to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native and Indigenous peoples, while the learning continues throughout the year. Reminder: The SWHS HOPE Club sponsored Fall Blood Drive with the American Red Cross is today, November 1st, 2022 from 7:25 am- 12:45pm. For more details visit our website - Homepage.


Attention Students: The Library will be closed all day on Tuesday, 11/1 for the Blood Drive. Please plan accordingly. 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

The Black Student Alliance (BSA) will have an Interest Meeting on November 2nd in Room 205 from 2:15-3:15. BSA is a safe space for students to share their school and cultural experiences, and discuss current events. Interested students are encouraged to join the Google Classroom: ecwnhhf to stay up-to-date on all BSA upcoming meetings and events. Please see Mrs. Bravo, Mrs. Davis, or Ms. Mwangi for more information.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 

Grade 10 students who would like to be considered for the Hugh O’Brian Youth leadership (HOBY) program may nominate themselves by seeing Ms. Carty in the Career Center to pick up an application. HOBY is an Annual Spring Conference for students in Grade 10 who would like to participate in hands-on leadership activities and explore how their own personal leadership skills can make an impact in their local community. Two students will be chosen to represent South Windsor High School at the Connecticut Conference.

The second wave of Capstone presentations will be held after school on Tuesday, November 15th. In order to present in this wave, you must have all written work submitted to your Advisor's Google Classroom by Monday, November 7th. All of your work must receive a score of successful or highly successful. You will sign up to present by filling out a Google Form that will be posted on the Capstone Website. A schedule with presentation times and Room assignments will be posted on the Capstone Website by Friday, November 11th. Students who present during this wave are eligible for an Honor Cord.

 

Seniors: Cap and gown orders are now open! Please scan the QR code on the flyer posted to the Senior classroom page to fill out the required information. No payment is due at this time. Complete this by November 18th to ensure that your order will be placed. As a reminder, graduation is on June 15th at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Please see Mr. Zielinski or Mrs. Lynch with any questions.

All students are welcome to submit an entry to design the cover of the program for the Fall Play.  Our Fall Play this year will be The Giver, based on the novel by Lois Lowry. Submissions are open to all current SWHS students and should be in jpeg, png or actual art on canvas/paper. Include your name, grade, current English teacher/period. Submit to Mrs. White in Room 144 or [email protected] . Deadline is Nov 7th. 

 

The South Windsor High School HOPE Club is sponsoring a fall blood drive with the American Red Cross on Tuesday, November 1st, 2022 from 7:25 am- 12:45pm.

An estimated 38 percent of Americans are eligible to give blood or platelets, but of those, less than 10 percent actually donate each year. If you are healthy and eligible, please come out to donate. Most donations take about an hour, so book your appointment, roll up your sleeve and become a part of the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross. You must be at least 16 years of age to donate blood. 16 year olds must have the Parental Consent form completed: Parental-Consent-Blood-Donation.pdf.  Sign up on the Red Cross website using code: swhs20, scan the QR code on the flyer, or click here

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 


Seniors – if you plan to take advantage of the free application day for ALL CT state universities on November 15th, TODAY (Monday October 31) is the LAST day to submit Academic Records Request Forms to School Counseling to guarantee that all of your materials will be sent by the deadline.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 

There are new jobs posted in the Career Center such as lifeguards or swim instructors at the Ellington YMCA and Goldfish Swim School in Manchester. There is also an opportunity for a student looking for an internship, service project, Capstone project or possibly even a part-time job as a technology support person for a local church. Visit the bulletin board for postings.

There will be another Young Eagles Rally for students interested in learning about becoming a pilot. The event will be this Saturday, October 29th at Meriden Airport. Pre-register at https://youngeaglesday.org/

Visits to the Career Center next week will be from Stonehill College, State University of New York Oneonta, and the United States Air Force. Sign up in Naviance if you would like to meet with any of these representatives.

Attention students attending homecoming: 
In order to attend after school activities such as the homecoming football game and dance, students must attend at least half of their class periods on that day. Advisors and administrators will be checking attendance throughout the day to ensure that all students attending homecoming meet these requirements. In addition, the latest students can enter the homecoming dance is 8:00 pm. All those arriving after that time will not be permitted. If students are admitted to the dance and then leave, please know they will not be readmitted into the dance.

The grade that raises the most money by Friday’s lunch waves, gets to keep 80% of ALL grades' money. The remaining 20% of $ will go to CT Breast Cancer Emergency Aid Foundation in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

ATHLETICS:

SWHS Girls Cross Country ran four freshmen in the Central CT Conference Freshman Invitational Meet this past Tuesday at Hall High School.  South Windsor’s Sofia Holovatska won the race in the field of 43 runners, finishing 22 seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher. Meghan Foster placed in 5th place for SWHS, while Sophia Gordon finished 20th.  Also representing SWHS was Raina Shukla.

Attention all aspiring actors, actresses, writers and directors, if you want to be a part of the SWHS Filmmaking Club! Over the course of this Semester, we are going to create, write, shoot, edit, and produce a full featured short film. We are a new club and are in need of people for every position. School pictures will be distributed today, Wednesday 10/26 and Thursday 10/27 during the lunch period. They will be handed out in the Hallway between the Cafeteria and Main Office.
 
The American Mathematics Contest is a national competition consisting of 25 challenging multiple choice Math problems given in 75 minutes.  The AMC 10 is designed for 9th and 10th graders, while the AMC 12 has more advanced topics and is designed for 11th and 12th graders. This year, SWHS will offer administration of the test on two different dates.
The AMC 10/12A will be given during the school day on Thursday, November 10. It will be administered during Periods 1 and 2 in the Cafeteria that day, so you would miss those classes.
The AMC 10/12B will be given after school on Wednesday, November 16. Students will meet in the SWHS Cafeteria at 3:00pm and will be done by 5:00pm.
You may take either administration or both, depending on your goals or availability.  If you are interested in participating, you must first join the AMC 10/12 Google Classroom. The class code is: pdqlz2s. Then follow directions to sign up for the tests by Tuesday, October 25 to reserve your spot for the test.
If you have any questions, please see your Math teacher, or see Mr. Brindisi in Room 265.

The French Club “Le Lynx” will meet on Wednesday, October 26th from 2:10 p.m. until the late bus in Room 105. We'll be making crepes with nutella, banana, strawberries and whipped cream. Our college visits for this week will include Eastern Connecticut State University, Brandeis University, Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, University of New Haven and Nova Southeastern University. The Nova Southeastern visit will be a special opportunity to hear from a SWHS alumna about attending school out of State and out of the New England Region. As always, sign up in Naviance to attend!

The Hartford Region Open Choice Program and CREC are offering bus transportation to a HBCU College Fair in New York City on Saturday, November 12th. Students who are in 11th grade and in the Open Choice program and any 12th grade student interested in the fair are invited to attend. There is an informational flyer with more details on the big screen outside School Counseling or on the Special Programs bulletin board in the Career Center. Please see Mrs. Bravo in Room 100 if you are interested in registering.

The Italian Club’s meeting Bocce and Pizza meeting has been moved to Wednesday, October 26th right after school.  We will meet in Room 226 and head outside at  2:10.  Please get $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli in Room 226 by this Friday, October 21st.  All are welcome.
 
ATHLETICS:

The Varsity Football Team will play Glastonbury High School tonight under the lights at Rye Street Park with kickoff at 6 pm. Girls & Boys Varsity Soccer will both play this Friday at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford with the girls game at 6 pm and the boys game at 8 pm. Admission to all games will be $3 for students and $5 for adults.

Homecoming Court will be announced October 25th.The Google Form is on your Class Google Classroom page and will close on Thursday at 2 pm. The 8 members nominated the most will be announced on Friday and be a part of the Homecoming Court.

Auditions for the award-winning "Spectrum Band" will be held on October 20th from 2pm to 4 pm in Room 3. We need drummers, Bass players, Guitarists, Alto Saxes, Tenor Saxes, Bari Saxes, Keyboard players, Trumpets and Trombones! Audition materials on Google Classroom Class Code: qtrteiq.
 
Attention all aspiring actors, actresses, writers and directors, if you want to be a part of the SWHS Filmmaking Club! Over the course of this Semester, we are going to create, write, shoot, edit, and produce a full featured short film. We are a new club and are in need of people for every position. CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:
All NHS members will be meeting today after school in the Cafeteria. Please bring in your dues if you have not done so already.

The French Club “Le Lynx” will meet on Wednesday, October 26th from 2:10 p.m. until the late bus in Room 105.  We'll be making crepes with nutella, banana, strawberries and whipped cream. Sign up with Mr.Ly in room 227 and Mr. Mabasa in Room 230 to reserve your spot. All are welcome. Bon appétit. 
 
The Humanitarian Seminar Club will meet on Tuesday, October 25 at 2pm in Room 145. We will be discussing the murder of Mahsa Amini and ways to make an impact for the women in Iran. Students for Mental Health Awareness will have its first meeting on October 27th. If you are interested in advocating for mental health and fundraising, join our Google Classroom with the code 3ags5fk. Contact Ms. Brown-Quinn or Ms. Robinson with any questions. 
  
ATHLETICS:

The Varsity Football Team will play Glastonbury High School this Thursday under the lights at Rye Street Park with kickoff at 6 pm. Girls & Boys Varsity Soccer will both play this Friday at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford with the girls game at 6 pm and the boys game at 8 pm. Admission to all games will be $3 for students and $5 for adults.

The Film Club's next meeting will be on Tuesday in Room 127 after school to watch and discuss The Truman Show. New and returning members are welcome.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 

Asnuntuck Community College, along with the Leipold Company, will host an Advanced Manufacturing Technology Program for interested students and parents on Thursday, October 20th from 5 to 7pm at 545 Marshall Phelps Road in Windsor. Closed toe/slip resistant shoes and long pants are required. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to [email protected] by October 18th. 
 
Attention members of South Windsor for the Local Kids. Our general body meeting is Tuesday, October 18th, right after school in the Library. This meeting is mandatory as we will be sharing your new Executive Board members, sharing important updates, and finalizing plans for the Volleyball Marathon. Please see Ms. Vendetta in Room 145 or Ms. Whitmore in Room 152 for any questions.
