SCHOOL NEWS
 
Beginning Wednesday, December 1st, students may no longer request cups for use at the water bottle refill stations. They are NOT available through the Nurse, Career Center, School Counseling, or the Main Office. All students are encouraged to bring a water bottle from home and use the refill stations throughout the building.
 
The last Senior Portrait dates are this week through Friday, December 3rd from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room. Schedule and confirm your appointment with the link on the SWHS website. Make sure to purchase your Story Worth Living Yearbook before the price increases on December 31st. The link to purchase is on the SWHS website.

If you are participating, please make sure all forms and payments are in to Mrs. McCool in the library by 2:15 p.m. TODAY. Please see Mrs. McCool or Ms. Andrews with any questions.
 
It is time to nominate a staff member for November's Staffulty of the Month award. Congratulations to Mr. Ly and Ms. Whitmore for winning the October 2021 Staffulty of the Month recognition! There were over 200 nominations for staff members from students for October. Students can nominate faculty and staff for the Staffulty of the Month award. This is someone you feel demonstrates kindness, understanding, and encouragement. Nominations will be reviewed by Student Council officers. Please nominate a staff member on your Class page on Google Classroom. Nominations will close TODAY, Tuesday, November 30th. 
 
Now that winter is upon us, many students are wearing their winter coats to school. If you would like a locker to store them in during the day, please bring in a lock and select a locker. Swing into the main office and speak to Mrs. Zaino or Mrs. Mulcahy, our attendance clerks, and tell them the locker number and your lock combination. They will then have the bolt removed so you can start using the locker each day. 
 
Today is Giving Tuesday! Please consider donating NEW socks, gloves, scarves, or hats to the winter accessory drive for At Home in this New Home.  We are looking for donated items now through December 15th to help Afghan refugees feel more at home in their new home here in Connecticut, so please consider picking up a winter accessory when you're out shopping this Giving Tuesday or any day before December 15th.  Thank you for your generosity! 
 
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

 “At Home in this New Home” Club is holding a winter accessory drive to make this winter a warmer one for all the refugees getting used to Connecticut’s climate. Donate new gloves, scarves, hats and socks in the collection boxes through December 15th. Donation boxes are located in the main lobby, cafe, and in room 124.
 
Do you want to protect the environment and buy some fun holiday crafts and decorations made from recycled materials? Stop by Mrs. Eitel’s room #206 before school or in the cafe to purchase an environmentally friendly craft for $3 and support the Environmental Club. 
 
The Sophomore Class of 2024 will be having a fundraiser at a new local sub place at 1500 Pleasant Valley Road in the Plaza at Buckland Hills in Manchester. This spirit event will be a week long, starting December 5th through December 11th. Coupons will be handed out and available on social media. We will be there on Thursday, December 9th from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Starting Monday November 29th, the stadium and patio will be closed for the winter season. Students can eat lunch in the cafeteria, hall of achievement, in the office hallway or in the media center.

If so, you are welcome to join the CREATIVE WRITING club, a brand new club this year! Our first meeting will be MONDAY, November 29th in room 142 from 2-3pm. Our meetings will then run every other Monday. You can join our Google Classroom for more information. The code is: jcnfc7n.
 
The Italian Club will be meeting Monday, November 29th from 2 until the late bus in room 226. We will be playing Italian Games and having snacks. Please join us, all are welcome! 
 
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER

South Windsor High School will be administering the ASVAB CEP again this year. The test will be held on Wednesday, December 15th at 7:30 a.m. in the Seminar Room. Whether you’re planning to go to college, a vocational school, or the Military, or you’re just not sure what you want to do yet, the ASVAB CEP can provide you with important information about your skills and interests -- and help get you on the right path toward a satisfying career. There are only a limited number of seats available, so seats will be first come, first serve. The test is open to all students in grades 10-12. If you would like to take the ASVAB CEP, please email Mr. Briggs at [email protected] or stop by the School Counseling Office.

Winter Tryouts for the SWHS Cheerleading team will be held on November 29th and December 2nd, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the back gym. You must attend both days. In order to try out, all online registration forms must be submitted to the main office, including an updated Physician's Statement dated after June 1st. For more information, see Coach Gionfriddo in room 213.

During lunch waves, students can donate $1 to send handwritten positive messages (anonymous or not) that will be distributed to recipients during their next homeroom. Please note that messages will be proofread by staff before distribution.
 
There will be a Student Council meeting after school on Tuesday, November 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Media Center. All members are welcome! We will be focusing on holiday events & spirit week.

We will meet in the Seminar room at 2:00 p.m. We have 12 business people coming in to talk with us and we will have snacks! Again, it is a mandatory meeting! Don't forget to register for FBLA and pay your dues. See Mrs. Barrett with any questions.
 
The Teens Against Poverty Club will be having its monthly meeting TODAY, Thursday, November 18th after school in room 131. Hope to see you there!
 
The Japanese Club will meet TODAY, Thursday, November 18, in room 230. You can learn to write your name in Japanese characters with a traditional calligraphy brush, learn Japanese and watch anime. All are welcome.

Hey Bobcat Foodies!  The Cooking Club is meeting this Thursday, November 18th after school in room 105 to create our Thanksgiving feast:  turkey tenderloin and gravy, cranberry-brie stuffed bread, corn soufflé, cheesy broccoli casserole, apple-side donut cake, and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!  While this cooking session is SOLD OUT please see Ms. Cliff or Sra. Ruiz to sign up for December's meeting.

Thursday – Russell Sage College. All visits are posted in Naviance. 
 
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving will open its application and launch a new website on Wednesday, November 17th. Search for the scholarship program in Naviance after Wednesday to see the updated information for this scholarship season.

Hey Bobcat Foodies!  The Cooking Club is meeting this Thursday, November 18th after school in room 105 to create our Thanksgiving feast:  turkey tenderloin and gravy, cranberry-brie stuffed bread, corn soufflé, cheesy broccoli casserole, apple-side donut cake, and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!  While this cooking session is SOLD OUT please see Ms. Cliff or Sra. Ruiz to sign up for December's meeting.  
 
SWFTK is hosting a Giving Grams fundraiser to benefit CT Children’s Hospital. During lunch waves on November 15th through November 19th, Students can donate $1 to send handwritten positive messages (anonymous or not) that will be distributed to recipients during their next homeroom. Please note that messages will be proofread by staff before distribution.
 
DECA and FBLA will be collecting gently used coats through November 18th. The coats will be dry cleaned and distributed to those in need. There is a box in the front of the school for you to drop them in. See Mrs. Barrett with any questions.
 
The Teens Against Poverty Club will be having its monthly meeting this Thursday, November 18th after school in room 131. Hope to see you there !
 
At Home in this New Home is a brand new club dedicated to helping refugees feel more at home in this new home. From now until December 15th, we will be collecting NEW winter accessories - hats, gloves, socks, and scarves to help Afghan refugees prepare for their first winter in New England.  There will be donation boxes in the lobby, by the cafe, and in Room 124.  Next time you go shopping, please think about picking up something to help refugees feel At Home in this New Home.   All donated scarves, socks, gloves, and hats must be NEW items to comply with Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants Covid-19 guidelines.  Thank you for your support!

Tuesday – Southern CT State University and Nazareth College
Wednesday – Connecticut Army National Guard
Thursday – Russell Sage College. All visits are posted in Naviance. 
 
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving will open its application and launch a new website on Wednesday, November 17th. Search for the scholarship program in Naviance after Wednesday to see the updated information for this scholarship season.
 
ATHLETICS

Winter athletics will begin on Monday, November 29th for Boys Ice Hockey, Girls Basketball and Wrestling. All other winter sports will begin on Thursday, December 2nd. This is a reminder to register online on the South Windsor High School Athletics website. Even if you are presently playing a Fall sport, you will still need to register online again for Winter athletics by Wednesday, November 17th - no exceptions.

SCHOOL NEWS
 
There will be no late busses on Wednesday, November 17th and Thursday, November 18th.  Please plan accordingly.  
 
Any student who signed up to take the American Mathematics Contest, AMC 10 or AMC 12, is reminded that the test is tomorrow during Periods 2 and 3 in the cafeteria.  Please report directly to the cafeteria in the morning.  Additional details can be found on the AMC Google Classroom page.
 
Attention Seniors: You have the opportunity to reduce your individual senior class expenses by participating in our gift card fundraiser. All information has been posted on the Class of 2022 Google Classroom and on the Class of 2022 Website. This fundraiser ends on November 30th. Please see Mrs. McCool or Ms. Andrews with any questions. 
 
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Thursday, November 18th is FBLA's National Enterprise Day. This will be a mandatory meeting. We will meet in the Seminar room at 2:00 p.m. We have 12 business people coming in to talk with us and we will have snacks! Again, it is a mandatory meeting! Don't forget to register for FBLA and pay your dues. See Mrs. Barrett with any questions.

The SADD club will be collecting socks to donate to a local homeless shelter. Collection baskets will be located throughout the building from November 10th through November 24th.

Winter Tryouts for the SWHS Cheerleading team will be held on Monday, November 29th, and Wednesday, December 2nd, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the back gym. You must attend both days. In order to try out, all online registration forms must be submitted to the main office, including an updated Physician's Statement dated after June 1, 2021. For more information, see Coach Gionfriddo in room 213.
