SCHOOL NEWS:

May is AAPI Heritage Month. May 1st marks the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States.  Each year, since 1979, this month is designated as an opportunity to celebrate and recognize, as we continue to uplift the diversity and excellence of AAPI individuals all year long. Calling Seniors who have taken multiple art classes!
The Senior Art Show is coming - this is your opportunity to show your artwork and qualify for an Art Honor Cord! Join the Google Classroom with the code: sjemjjw to learn the guidelines, judging Criteria, and to fill out the application. If you are interested in earning an honor cord in art, you will need to participate in the judged section of this Senior Art Show.
Applications are due May 5th - If you have any questions, be sure to reach out to an art teacher so we can help!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  
 
Hello Bobcats, FBLA is hosting their NICU Mama fundraiser from May 1 - 15. Please support parents with children in the NICU by bringing in toiletries, fuzzy items, gift cards or money to Room 125. Check out the flier for more details. FBLA will create and deliver care baskets to these parents. 

The final Italian Club meeting of the year will be Wednesday, May 10th right after school.  We'll be going outside, playing bocce, and having pizza.  We're going to meet rain or shine!  If you would like to attend, please get $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli in Room 226.  All are welcome!

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

The part-time jobs board in the Career Center is overflowing with opportunities. Brand new to the board are positions at iCode Manchester – a STEAM education center. They are looking for Lab Mentors and Part-Time Instructors depending on age and experience. All jobs are for students who are 16 and over. Stop into the Career Center to see the flyers and scan the QR code to access application information. There are plenty of other jobs available to consider as well– restaurants, daycares and camps, and more!

Applications are now available for CT Girls State, CT Boys State and CT State Police Youth Week for Summer 2023 programming for current 11th graders. ATHLETICS:  

The South Windsor Tennis teams will be hosting “The Zebra Cup,” a student/faculty tennis tournament on May 16th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Wapping Tennis courts. All proceeds will benefit Hartford Bags of Love. Suggested donation is $10 per person.

SCHOOL NEWS:

Tree planting opportunity for Arbor Day, today after school around 2:20 ish p.m.at the South Windsor Rye Street Park. We will be planting three large trees and looking for two more additional volunteers. Light refreshments will be provided. Please bring your own water bottle. This is also an educational activity partnering with SW Parks & Rec. Interested students please reach out ASAP to Ms. Ramachandran at [email protected]. Thank you!
 
Attention Seniors: Celebrate your big plans after high school graduation by participating in the College Gear/Future Plans Spirit Day on Monday, May 1st. Rep some gear to show us where you are going next year or wear anything related to celebrating your future plans. We can’t wait to celebrate alongside you.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

Seniors should take note of 2 scholarships awarded ONLY to SWHS students. Both are due very soon. The Marcella Masinda Scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated efforts to improve our society through participation in civic and social activities, and has a strong moral character. The application is due next Monday, May 1st. The William Perry Scholarship is awarded to students who have exhibited outstanding leadership in multiple arenas, while maintaining a rigorous course load, and strong academic performance. This application is due next Wednesday, May 3rd. Details for both scholarships can be found in Naviance. Search the database for the scholarship name for quick access.
 
Harvard Student Agencies and Learn with Leaders have teamed up to provide spring and summer enrichment programs for students looking to explore careers and leadership skills. Visit www.learnwithleaders.com and under the “Our Offerings” tab choose Certificate Programs to learn more about opportunities such as Future Doctors, Future Lawyers, Future Entrepreneurs and more.

ATHLETICS:  

Girls Track and Field competed against Tolland this week. First place finishes were had by Serena Thaker in the 400, Valerie Turgeon in pole vault, Mallory Mead in high jump and javelin, Grace Smith in the 3200, Sophia McCormack in discus and the 4X100 team of Susan Otaluka, Sidney Montana, Jaya Pichay, and Serena Thaker.

Payments can also be made through MySchoolBucks until 11:59 p.m. on 5/3. Senior dues cover graduation, reception, and outing. See Google Classroom for details.

Ruiz to reserve your spot.

Attention students of SWHS-Nominate a staff or faculty member for April's Staffulty of the Month on your class Google Classroom page. Students can nominate faculty and staff that demonstrate kindness, understanding, encouragement, and more through this school year. Nominations will be reviewed by Student Council officers. Two Staff members will be selected every month. They will be recognized at monthly faculty meetings and on the school website. Please be school appropriate with your nominations.

In partnership with CT Highway Safety Office, Choices Matter is a life-changing program for high school students using personal stories and interactive materials to inspire students to make the right choices both behind the wheel and in life. The event will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Light refreshments will be served.

Mind's Eye, our school's literary magazine, is accepting submissions for this year's magazine. We are looking for writing of all types, including poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, as well as art work, both 2D and 3D. Submissions can be sent via a Google form -- see your English teacher for the QR code!

Tickets for The Addams Family will be sold in the Cafeteria on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Please come and enjoy the show!

The 9th Grade Class of 2026 is having a fundraiser at a local ice cream shop at Evergreen Walk on Thursday, April 20th from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Please stop by and help support the Class of 2026. 

Graduation lawn signs are currently on sale! There are only a few days left to order, so don’t delay! You can find the order form on the Senior classroom or on the SWHS main page. Forms and payment can be brought to the Counseling Office. Please contact Kathy Reed at [email protected] for more information.

SCHOOL NEWS:

They're creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, and they are coming to South Windsor High School. The Spring Musical “The Addams Family” opens this Friday April 21st. For tickets follow the link below or scan the QR code on the flyer.

The library will be closed period 5 to study hall students on Wednesday, 4/19 due to class use. Please plan accordingly. 

The Varsity Softball team lost to EO Smith 5-2 last Wednesday. The Bobcats started to rally in the 6th but fell short. The offense was led by Taylor Nisyrios and Sienna Michaelson who managed multiple hits. Grace Benashski added a hit, scoring 2 runs. Cierra Green and Max Shuska were strong on defense. Gabby Ryan had another solid performance in the circle pitching 6 innings allowing only 4 hits and striking out 5. 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

Do you have gently used sporting equipment that you no longer need? Give them a second life by donating it to Equipment Assist. Equipment Assist is a local program run by 3 high school freshmen who are collecting items to donate to the Hartford Police Athletic League (PAL) and Active City, which benefits underserved youth. From now through April 30th, we are collecting all types of gently used sports equipment including but not limited to: cleats, ice and hockey skates, baseball gloves, balls, helmets, shin guards, etc. All sizes are acceptable. South Windsor pick-ups will be on April 2nd and 30th. If you have questions, or to schedule a pick up, please email [email protected]

The Strategy Club will meet in the back of the media center on Wednesday.  Join us for board games and D&D.
