SCHOOL NEWS:

 

Attention seniors, the first round of in-person Senior dues collections is here. We will be collecting Wednesday, February 5th, during all 6th period lunch waves in the cafeteria, and Thursday, February 6th from 12:50-2:30 in the Main Lobby. Please see the Class of 2025 Google Classroom page for more information or see Ms. Andrews or Mrs. Farrell with questions. 

 

South Windsor for the Local Kids’ annual Volleyball Marathon is on Friday, February 7th in the school gym. Grab a team sign up form from the back table in the cafeteria during lunch waves before it’s too late!

 

The Class of 2027 is hosting a Bake Sale fundraiser at the basketball game on January 31st. 

 

Stop by the Library Media Center to check out new books on display. Current displays include CT Nutmeg Award Nominees, Lunar New Year, All Things Winter, Sport Nonfiction, and SWHS Most Popular 2024 Books.

 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES: 

 

The Science National Honor Society is hosting a fundraiser tonight at Ben and Jerry’s from 4-9pm. Help raise funds to support community outreach and programs that support scientific literacy. 

 

The HOPE club is hosting a guest speaker event on Thursday, January 30th after school in the Seminar Room. Our guest is a physician's assistant who specializes in cardiology. Bring any questions you might have about your potential career in medicine! See the HOPE club google classroom and flyers posted around the school for more information.

 

The Puzzle Society will meet on Wednesday 2/5 from 2-3pm in Room 223. New members are welcome. Join the google classroom with the code evndcsx. 

 

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

 

Important scholarship updates for seniors! Many new scholarships are going into Naviance daily. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Scholarship program ends on February 4th, and the South Windsor Dollars for Scholars portal officially opened on January 21st. If you want help understanding how to look for scholarships and more importantly how to ACCURATELY complete your Dollars for Scholars application, please come to the next Workshop Wednesday, after school THIS WEDNESDAY, January 29th, in the Seminar Room. You must let Mrs. Carty know you plan to attend. Bring your Chromebook and make some progress on trying to fund your college education!

 

Last call to attend the CT State Judicial Branch virtual job shadow program on Monday, February 3rd. Interested students in grades 10-12 should speak to Mrs. Carty before this Friday (1/31) to get details and secure a spot.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

 

Students in grades 10 through 12 interested in careers in the justice system are invited to attend a virtual job shadow program with the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch. The program will take place on Monday, February 3rd from 12:30-2:00 PM. Students who register to attend can come to the Career Center with their Chromebooks and headphones to log in to the session. Please let Mrs. Carty know if you would like to attend by the end of school on Friday, January 31st in order or receive the log in access. 

 

The CT Science Center, in partnership with the CT Center for Advanced Technology, will host a PATHWAYS TO STEM – CAREERS IN MANUFACTURING program on Thursday, February 6 from 5-8 PM. The free event allows students to explore STEM careers, meet employers, listen to an inspiring panel of rising professionals, try STEM challenges, and explore the Science Center’s galleries while networking with experts. To register, visit the Career Center and scan the QR code on the posted flyer.

 

Important scholarship updates for seniors! COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

 

Hartford Hospital’s Summer VolunTEEN program will hold a mandatory information session for students interested in applying to the program. To attend the meeting, students must register in advance starting on January 25th at 9 AM. Space is limited and this is the only way to receive an application to this competitive opportunity, so register early. Additional details and a link to the VolunTEEN website will be provided in the next issue of the School Counseling and Career Center newsletter. 

 

Seniors – the next Career Center Workshop Wednesday will take place on January 29th after school. It will feature a brief overview of scholarships and how to find them in Naviance, but mostly focus on how to accurately complete your Dollars for Scholars application to avoid common mistakes. Please sign up to attend so that a proper space can be reserved. You can either e-mail Mrs. Carty or stop into the Career Center and register in person.

The South Windsor Teen Center is open for South Windsor High School Students on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2pm to 4:30pm. In order to receive a late bus pass from the Teen Center, you MUST arrive before 2:30 and stay at the Teen Center until the late bus arrives here. There will no longer be exceptions to this rule. There is a Youth Council meeting on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 5pm-6pm. Join our Youth Council to make your dreams a reality.

The Italian Club will meet on Thursday, January 16th right after school in Room 105. We'll be making an assortment of Italian cookies. Space is limited so please get $5 to Mrs. Zaccardelli in Annex Room 35 ASAP to save your spot!

There will be an informational meeting at 2pm on Wednesday 1/15, with auditions and callbacks on Monday 1/27 and Wednesday 1/29, respectively. To get audition materials, please join the SWHS Drama google classroom using code: bbpcvlt

The South Windsor Teen Center is open for South Windsor High School Students to hang out on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2pm to 4:30pm. We have a new policy in place for snacks. When you arrive, please sign in with your first and last name, you will be given 2 tickets to choose your free snacks. If you would like additional snacks they will be $1.00 for 2 snacks or $.50 cents for one.  

Most important: In order to receive a late bus pass from the Teen Center, you MUST be here before 2:30 and stay at the Teen Center until the late bus arrives here. The Water Launch Club will meet right after school on Thursday, January 9th in Annex Room 35. The Water Launch Club works with The Water Project,  a non-profit organization that raises money to provide clean and safe water across villages in Sub-Saharan Africa. We will be selecting leadership positions and deciding what we'll be doing for fundraisers this year. Come join us, and be a part of this life-changing club! South Windsor for the Local Kids is hosting a donation day fundraiser today from 10:30am-10pm at Shake Shake. All proceeds benefit the club dance drive. 

 

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

Both the Big Y and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving scholarships are local and are due by the end of January. The Hartford Foundation offers a great program with access to dozens of scholarships, 2 of which are for South Windsor students only. Find scholarships in Naviance under the Colleges tab. Click on Scholarships & Money, and the Scholarship Search.

 

Another reminder to seniors – if you have recently received a college acceptance, full-time job offer, or enlisted in the military for next year, be sure to fill out the form in your Grade 12 Google Classroom. This news will be announced in our monthly newsletter and shared on the screens outside School Counseling and Main Lobby.
