Just a reminder to all students…due to the increasing volume of traffic and latecomers, please be sure to leave home earlier in order to be in your seat on time at 8:25am for the start of classes Monday.

Senior Art Show students must have their applications in by the end of TODAY. If you need the code to apply to our Google classroom, please see one of the art teachers.

The Metropolitan University Tour will come to Harford on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00pm at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The program features research universities in 5 major cities, including SMU, Tulane, George Washington University, Northeastern and NYU. Representatives will share information about their schools and tips on the application process and answer questions. For more information, visit www.met.tours.

The Exploring College Options spring program will take place at sites throughout New England and NY during the week of May 20. Students interested in learning more about Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn or Stanford can choose from 5 program dates and locations that week. A flier with all options is hanging in the Career Center. Please note that this program usually takes place again in Farmington each fall, but families wanting to get information earlier may choose to drive to these regional locations now.

Are you an artist? Do you like to write? Mind's Eye Magazine, South Windsor High School's literary and art magazine, is in the process of creating our 2017-2018 issue, and we'd love to see your work. We are looking for your stories, poems, creative essays, song lyrics, photographs of art, and any other original work that you've created and would like to be considered for the magazine. Please forward your work to Ms. Pieratti, or give a copy to your English or art teacher by Friday, May 11.

Class Officer AND Student Council Elections are on Thursday, May 24. All those interested in running for Class Office or Student Council may pick up an application in the Main Office or Admin 237. All applications are due by Thursday, May 17. 

There will be a Student Council meeting for anyone interested in a leadership position next Wednesday, May 9 at 2:10pm in Room 163. We will discuss Student Council elections for President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. New members and students interested in joining Student Council are welcome to come! If you cannot attend, please see Ms. Ullinger in the Social Studies office at some point prior to the meeting for an online application.

Science Fiction/Fantasy Club meets Monday, May 7. Join us for snacks in Room 127 while we watch and discuss Guardians of the Galaxy. New members are welcome.

Reminder… auditions for the fall musical, The Sound of Music, will take place Tuesday, May 15, and Wednesday, May 16 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm in Room 148. We are looking for a committed and diverse group of singers and actors for this production…visit the callboard in the English hallway (outside Room 147) for sign-up times and audition materials, and see Mrs. Knapp or Mrs. White with any questions. 

If you are interested in becoming an engineer or learning more about what it takes to become one, UConn School of Engineering offers 2 summer programs. Explore Engineering is open to sophomores and juniors and the SPARK Program is open to female students who are currently in grade 6 – 11. For more information on these programs, visit the Enrichment Programs section of Naviance. Flyers are also hanging in the Career Center, where you can find information about many summer pre-college and career exploration programs.

It may barely feel like spring out, but it’s not too soon to think about summer plans. If you are looking for unique summer experiences to explore career options or preview college life, check out the Enrichment Programs section in the College Research area of your Naviance account. Thousands of programs can be researched. A smaller selection of brochures and materials are also available to check out or copy in the Career Center.

South Windsor Rotary Club Scholarship applications are now available. You can pick one up from the Career Center or download it from the Scholarship section of Naviance. This year’s deadline is May 11.  

Springfield College is holding a Discovery Day on Monday, May 7 with tours offered at 11:00am and information sessions at 10:00am and noon. To register, visit springfield.edu/discoverydays.

Athletic News:
-Today, the girls’ lacrosse team will be taking on Avon in their Coaches vs Cancer game. Come out to watch an exciting game and support the girls as they raise money for this great cause. Varsity starts at 4:00pm on the turf. 

-The girls’ golf team lost to St. Paul yesterday but beat Northwest Catholic for the first win in its short history. Amala Mammayil was the co-medalist with a 43. Meghna Mazumdar, Caroline McCullough, Cameron Isherwood and Olivia Hewitt all played well.

-Yesterday, the girls’ lacrosse team took on Ellington. Varsity won with a score of 15-2 and JV shut the team out, 13-0. Today, the team will be taking on Avon in their Coaches vs. Cancer game. Come out to watch an exciting game and support the girls as they raise money for this great cause. Varsity starts at 4:00pm on the turf. 

-Congratulations to the boys’ volleyball team for their win last night at Home vs. Enfield. The JV won a close one 2-1 and Varsity 3-0. The team will travel to play Rockville on Monday. Hope you will come out and support the team. The JV boys’ volleyball practice for today, Friday, May 4 is cancelled. The optional practice tomorrow, Saturday, May 5 is still on from 10:00am to 12:00pm. And, please be ready for the 2:40pm bus to the Rockville match on Monday.
