SCHOOL NEWS: 

September 15th marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States.  Each year Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America - www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/about
 
The 9th Grade Class of 2026 elections will be on Thursday, October 6th. Info can be found on our school website too. In order to run for Office, you need to fill out a Candidate Application Form. You will also need to submit a copy of your speech to Mrs. Barrett in Room 122A by September 27th. Your speech should outline why you would make a good Class Officer - what are your skills, strengths, vision for your classmates, activities that you participated in that qualify you for the Office that you seek? All posters and speeches will be posted online. See Mrs. Barrett in Room 122A if you have any questions!
 
Rho Kappa application now available: Rho Kappa, The National Social Studies Honor Society, is currently inviting eligible Juniors and Seniors to apply for this opportunity. The application form will be posted and shared by your Social Studies teachers in Google Classroom. Additional information can be found on the application. If you are interested, but not currently in a Social Studies class please email Mrs. Slogesky, [email protected] or Mrs. Simcik, [email protected]. The deadline for the application is Friday September 30th. 
 
South Windsor High School is having an open call for you to audition for the Fall Play. This fall the school is putting on a play. Sign up for auditions by Mrs. White's Room 144. Auditions will take place on Monday, September 19 in Room 144, starting at 2:15 pm. See Mrs. White for details.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

Anyone who is interested in joining this year's Math Team should meet on Friday, September 16th at 2:15 in the Media Center Seminar Room. We will be discussing the upcoming season and the format of our practices and meets. Please see Mr. Brindisi in Room 265 if you are unable to attend.
 
If you want information about the SWHS Science Olympiad Team, join the Google Classroom with the following code: xg5afuv. A QR code is also posted on the display case for Science Olympiad in the Science Hallway. Mr. Kraus is available in room 210 to talk about the team and the expectations for competition. The meeting for new members will be on Thursday Sept 22nd at 2:45pm.
 
Looking to pen-pal and create a friendship with a female student in Kenya? Are you interested in discussing women's rights issues and advocating for female empowerment? Then Unified for Underprivileged Girls is the club for you! Please come to the informational meeting on September 15th from 2:00 to 3:00pm in the Seminar Room if interested. Please contact Mrs. Fox or Olivia Liegl with any questions and we hope to see you there!
 
South Windsor for the Local Kids is hosting their first meeting on Thursday, Sept 22nd in the Cafeteria. Do you want to help kids in our community by raising money for our local children's hospital and attending awesome events such as the volleyball marathon and the dance marathon? Come to our first meeting and bring your friends to find out more about this awesome club! COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: 
 
The Career Center continues to get new job opportunities – please check the “Part-Time Jobs” board if you are interested in working. We are also booking new College visits every day. Visits will start on Monday, September 19th. Representatives from many Colleges will be coming throughout the fall to meet with interested students in Grades 11 and 12. These are opportunities to hear a presentation about the school, pick up materials, get on a mailing list, show your interest, and ask questions. College visits are excused absences from class, but you must check in with your teacher to make sure it is an appropriate time for you to go. All visits are listed in Naviance. Please see Mrs. Carty in the Career Center if you have any questions.

The New England Association for College Admission Counseling will host a College Fair on Sunday, September 18th from 12-2 pm at Western New England University in their Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center. Over 100 schools will be represented and admission is free. For more information, go to WNE.edu/visit. You will also find a poster in the Career Center on the Special Program bulletin board.
