February is Black History Month: Today, Feb 1st, marks the first day of Black History Month. Black History Month offers an important opportunity to honor and highlight the accomplishments of Black Americans in history and society, as we continue the study of Black History as American History throughout the year. This event was first celebrated as a week in February of 1926 and the week was expanded to a month in 1976. More background can be found here: https://blackhistorymonth.gov/

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

Interested in STEM? Have strong writing skills? Want to stand out to college admission committees? The Medical and Scientific Research Club is right for you! Gain knowledge on a niche topic in medicine or science, improve your scientific writing skills, and get accepted for publication! Our experienced mentors will guide you along the journey of writing original research or a literary review to get accepted for publication. Additionally, you’ll be given a chance to network with professionals in the fields of your choice. Google Classroom code: 5ullbb4. Our next in-person meeting is on Monday, February 6th after school from 2:00-2:30 p.m. in Room 209. Please come prepared with a research topic or a job shadowing interest and an idea on how to pursue it. If you plan to write a research paper and are able to start drafting it, that is great. If you are already in the works of writing a research paper, please feel free to stop by and workshop your writing. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:

A Reminder to all Seniors looking for scholarships – the next deadline for scholarships from Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is Thursday, February 2nd. While there are many scholarships available through HFPG, two scholarships given specifically to South Windsor High School seniors are included in this wave and are worth your attention. The Julie Veilleux Memorial Scholarship is given to a South Windsor High School Senior girl who has demonstrated significant leadership or academic achievement, and the Joyce S. Picard Scholarship is given to South Windsor students who are pursuing degrees in science, medical, nursing or health-related fields. All of these can be found in Naviance.

The New England Air Museum is looking for applicants for both its Simulator Staff and Education Department. Postings for the jobs are on the bulletin board in the Career Center with details on expected tasks, pay rate, schedule and how to apply. These are great opportunities for students interested in anything related to science, aerospace, flight, or education. Students who are 16 and over and interested are encouraged to come get the information.

It’s tennis season! The girls tennis team is holding an informational meeting on Thursday, February 2nd after school in Room 204. Join the classroom with code nxx4iiy. Any questions, see Coach Belval or Coach Karasinski in Room 204.
