SCHOOL NEWS:

In honor of Black History Month, the Black Student Alliance will be hosting a Black Excellence Panel on March 1, 2023 at 2:10 p.m. in the Cafeteria. The panel will consist of black professionals from various cultural and career backgrounds. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions of professionals that are trailblazers in their careers. The discussion will center around overcoming barriers that may try to stifle your success, financial and personal advice to encourage all students to succeed. All are welcome to join the discussion. Snacks will be provided. Please contact President Nafissa Ly or Vice President Lota Onyia, Mrs. Bravo, Mrs. Davis, or Ms. Mwangi for more information. We hope to see you there!

The Class of 2025 is having a fundraiser at a local tavern restaurant located on Evergreen Way on March 1st from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Timothy Edwards Middle School ENTERTAINERS proudly presents - Matilda The Musical JR. on the following dates: March 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 2023. General Admission is $10 for students & adults and $5 seniors (65 & older) and children 5 & younger. Tickets on sale beginning Monday, February 20th at TEMS. SWHS is partnering with the town to host an electronic recycling competition. Items like chargers, computers, ipods, radios, digital cameras etc can be dropped off in the orange bins placed in various Science teachers’ rooms. This is a competition between classes and the winning class will earn $150 to be used towards major school events.  Freshmen can drop off items to Mrs. Eitel (Room 206). Sophomores can drop off to Mrs. Davies (Room 212), Juniors to Mrs. Howard (Room 250), and Seniors to Mrs. Field (Room 202). We will be collecting items from February 20th to March 3rd. A list of acceptable items is attached to the posters that have been hung around the school. Contact Mrs. Eitel by email or in person with any questions. 

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:  

FBLA invites you to its annual 3 v 3 basketball tournament on March 17th at 2:25 p.m. in the Gym. The cost is $30 per team, with proceeds going to Make a Wish Foundation. Sign up during lunch waves or in Room 225 from February 27 - March 15th.

Please join us for our next Italian Club meeting right after school on Wednesday, March 1st in Room 226. We will be watching a movie and having snacks.  Everyone is welcome! 

Join the Interact Club’s ”Cooking for a Cause” committee at a local ice cream shop in Evergreen Walk on March 6th from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Proceeds will be used to purchase food which the committee will cook and donate to the South Park Inn, a local shelter. 

Did you know that Sakura (Sa-ku-RAH)  means cherry blossom in Japan ? In about four weeks, Japan will be filled with blooming Sakura (Sa-ku-RAH), transforming the whole country into a sea of Spring colors.  The CherryBlossom Festival draws in around 63 million tourists each year. On THURSDAY, March 2nd, the Japanese Club will be making our own Sakura  (Sa-ku-RAH) decorations for our display case. All are welcome to participate and watch anime in room 230 right after school.

Did you know that the amount of funding an animal shelter receives directly impacts the number of animals they can help? Help us help animals by donating your spare change during lunch waves from March 6th through March 10th. Funds raised will benefit Pack Leaders Rescue of East Hartford.

ATHLETICS:  

The Varsity Girls Basketball Team will host Bristol Eastern in a 1st round state tournament game this Monday, February 27th at 6:30 p.m.Tickets are available for purchase online only on the CIAC website under the Tournament Central tab. *When purchasing an online ticket DO NOT ACTIVATE the ticket until someone at the game entrance on Monday does that for you or your ticket will be invalid.  Screenshots of tickets will not be accepted.
Ticket prices are as follows:
Students (grades 1-12) $5.00 
Adults $10.00
Children Five (5) and Under $5.00
Free Military in uniform or with I.D.
Free Senior Citizens (age 65 and older)

Spring sports registration is now open in Powerschool. If you plan on playing a Spring sport, be advised that all registration material is due by March 9th. The 3 items you must submit are (1) Powerschool online registration, (2) Payment of $125 in the form of cash, check or online using www.myschoolbucks.com, and (3) A current Physician Statement dated AFTER  June 1, 2022. Please note that if you submitted a physician statement for a previous sport in the 22-23 school year, you do not need to resubmit one. Your registration is INCOMPLETE until all 3 of these items are submitted to the main office. Registration deadline is March 9th. Registrations submitted after March 9th are not guaranteed to be processed in time for tryouts. Contact the main office with any questions. All students interested in trying out for the baseball team should attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 28th after school in Room 161. Any questions, please see Mr. D'Amato.

There has been a change in the date for the SWHS boy's lacrosse meeting. It will now be held on March 1st in Room 111 at 2:50 p.m. If you are not able to attend, please make sure you sign up in the Main office. 
                                                                                                               
Any girls interested in joining Track and Field who have not participated at the high school level before should attend an informational meeting from 2:05 p.m to 2:30 p.m.in Room 127 on either Wednesday, March 1st or Wednesday, March 8th.  Please see Ms. McCullough in Room 127 with any questions.
