February is Black History Month. Today, Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society honors: Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth was an anti-slavery and women’s rights activist who was born into slavery and then sold several times before escaping to freedom with her daughter. Although she could not read or write, she was a captivating speaker, and gave her now famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman,” to challenge the idea that men were superior to women.

Another fast fact presented by the Environmental Club: Did you know that from 1820 to 1955, the concentration of mercury in sections of Long Island Sound increased by more than 1,300 percent? Heavy metals like mercury are consumed by fish, which are then consumed by humans. Mercury can have many effects on children and teenagers like permanently decreasing the brain's ability to respond to sound and impact the body's ability to regulate heartbeat. Learn how the concentrations of Mercury are being reduced at the Environmental Club meeting every Thursday in Room 206.
