Please note…Monday is a regular start day. Classes begin promptly at 7:25am.

March is Women’s History Month. Today we honor Dorothea Dix. Dorothea Dix is known for her work in the 1800s to improve the treatment of the mentally ill. In Massachusetts, Dix visited prisons, wrote reports, talked with doctors, and pushed successfully for new laws to protect the mentally challenged. She even toured Europe and Asia in the 1850s, influencing them to build new hospitals and improve their treatments. Prior to this, Dix’s main triumph was opening the first state hospital for the mentally ill in Trenton, New Jersey.

Another fast fact presented by the Environmental Club: For the second year in a row, the levels of dissolved oxygen in waters of the Long Island have increased. This oxygen is removed from the water in order for fish and other organisms to breathe. Dissolved oxygen levels have been incredibly low recently, mostly because excess nitrogen from sewage and fertilizer run pulls it out of the water. However it seems that efforts by Connecticut and New York State to reduce nitrogen pollution have been successful. The recent increase in dissolved oxygen demonstrates that water quality is improving and the sound is becoming a healthier habitat for aquatic animals that live there. Come to the Environmental Club meeting today in Room 206 at 2:10pm to learn more.
