On this date in history, civil rights activist and leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born. Famously known for his “I Have a Dream” speech, King’s leadership helped inspire the 24th amendment abolishing poll taxes and the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 prohibiting racial discrimination in employment and education and outlawed racial segregation in public facilities. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law designating the third Monday of January as a national holiday which was first celebrated as a federal holiday in 1986. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
