SCHOOL NEWS:
It’s time for “this date in history.” On February 23, 1822, Boston was granted a charter to become a city in Massachusetts. On this date in 1868, W.E.B. Du Bois, a sociologist, author, and activist who helped co-found the NAACP was born. On this date in 1940, Woody Guthrie wrote one of America’s best known folk songs “This Land is Your Land.” This song was sung in classrooms for many years and also used as one of the anthems for the Civil Rights movement. In pop culture, on this date in 1896 the Tootsie Roll was invented. Named after the inventor Leo Hirshfeld’s daughter “Tootsie”, Tootsie Roll Industries is one of the largest candy companies in the world and produces about 64 million tootsie rolls every day with the same recipe from 1896. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
