It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 2, 1854, tragedy struck the Fales & Gray Car Works factory when a steam boiler exploded causing significant injuries to the workers. In total, over 20 workers perished and dozens more were injured. Exactly two months after the accident, the citizens of Hartford voted to establish a public hospital eventually leading to the building of Hartford Hospital in 1859, the first institution of its kind in the greater Hartford area. It remains one of the area’s major hospitals over 150 years later. In pop culture, on March 2, 1933 the groundbreaking movie King Kong made its world premiere and Warner Brothers’ oldest cartoon character Porky Pig debuted on this date in 1935. In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a basketball game for the Philadelphia Warriors, a record that still stands today. Famous birthdays on this date in history include author Dr. Seuss and singer Jon Bon Jovi. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
