It’s time for “this date in history.” On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States of America signed a treaty of surrender ending the U.S. Civil War. On April 9, 1939, opera singer Marian Anderson sang in front of the Lincoln Memorial after being denied the opportunity to sing in a Washington D.C. concert hall due to the color of her skin. The invitation to sing in front of the Lincoln Memorial came directly from the Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, who stated in his introduction of Anderson on that Easter Sunday that “Genius draws no color line.” On April 9, 1959, NASA introduced America’s first astronauts including John Glenn who would make multiple trips into space. Finally, on April 9, 1965 the Houston Astrodome hosted the first indoor baseball game. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
