It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 1, 1926, the Ford Motor Company became one of the first companies to adopt a 5-day/40 hour work week. On May 1, 1931, the Empire State Building in New York City officially opened and was the tallest building in the world for nearly four decades. The building remains iconic and is considered a U.S. landmark. On May 1, 1941, the film Citizen Kane premiered in New York City and is still considered one of the greatest films ever made. On May 1, 1971, Disney’s Hollywood Studios Theme Park opened. On May 1, 1991 baseball legend Rickey Henderson stole the 939th base of his career surpassing Lou Brock to become major league baseball’s all-time basestealer. He ended his career with 1,406 stolen bases and remains the all-time stolen bases leader. Finally, on this date in 2000, the award-winning Gladiator opened in theatres and became the second highest grossing film of that year with $465 million dollars earned.
