SCHOOL NEWS:
It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island became the first colony to renounce its allegiance to King George III. Ironically, Rhode Island would be the last state to ratify the U.S. Constitution several years later on May 29, 1790. On May 4, the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln was laid to rest in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. His funeral train traveled through 180 cities and several states receiving many mourners along the route. On May 4, 1905 the United States assumed construction of the Panama Canal after a failed attempt by France to create a canal. On May 4, 1959, Ella Fitzgerald known as the “First Lady of Song” became the first Black woman to win a Grammy at the inaugural show. On this date in 1966, San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays hit his 512th career home run to break the National League record for home runs at that time. And on this date, “May the Fourth Be With You!” Thanks for listening to this date in history.
