SCHOOL NEWS:
It’s time for “this date in history.” This is a sad day in Connecticut sports history–on May 6, 1997, the owner of the then Hartford Whalers announced he was moving the NHL team to North Carolina and renamed them the Carolina Hurricanes. The Whalers had been playing in Hartford since 1975 beginning as the New England Whalers, eventually renamed as the Hartford Whalers in 1979. Though the team had varying levels of success, it had a tremendously loyal Connecticut following and Hartford Whalers merchandise still remains popular and profitable for distributors. It remains a hope of many that the Hartford Whalers be resurrected and return to the Nutmeg State. On this date in 1998, Steve Jobs of Apple introduced the first iMac, a personal computer that became widely successful and helped revive the company which was struggling at the time. Sticking with pop culture, on this date in 1957 and 2004 respectively, the final episode of I Love Lucy and Friends–both extremely popular comedy shows of their respective eras. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
