It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 8, 1877, the first annual New York Bench Show of Dogs took place. Now known as the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, it is the second oldest running sporting event in the U.S. (second only to the Kentucky Derby). On May 8, 1886 the iconic beverage Coca-Cola was developed and originally marketed as a cure-all tonic. On May 7, 1945, the Allied Nations throughout the world including the United States celebrated V-E Day with the end of World War Two on the European front. On this date in 1963, the American release of Dr. No, the first James Bond movie starring Sean Connery began an incredible run of Bond films found extremely popular by the American public. On May 8, 1976, the theme from “Welcome Back, Kotter” became the number one pop song in America. Continuing with pop culture, on this date in 2010, Betty White became the oldest “Saturday Night Live” host when she was the special guest at the age of 88. Famous birthdays on this date include the 33rd President of the United States Harry S. Truman, poet Phillis Wheatley, boxer Sonny Liston, and comedian Don Rickles. Girls Track and Field won their meet against Enfield this week. First place finishes were had by Rachel Matyschysyk in 400, Nora Cayward in 800, Sofia Holavatska in 1600, Emma Hennessey in 3200, Aaliyah Scott in 100 hurdles, Juliana Mayer in 300 hurdles and long jump, Zoe Bailey in shot put, Mallory Mead in high jump and javelin, and Sadhana Ganesan in triple jump. First place finishes were also had by our 4X100 teams of Keeley Scott, Destiny Gooden, Ella Daniele Gabrianna Knowles, 4X800 of Rachel Matyschsyk, Kiran Thaker, Nora Cayward, Sofia Holovatska, and 4X400 of Jana Brownbill, Kiran Thaker, Vritte Uchil, and Kayleigh Thornton.
